i assume the person you are talking about was just drafted by kaushik...if not, whatever. about time caju was taken. honestly. i think he was worthy of being drafted 4-5 rounds ago.
Fantastic pick by Kaushik. http://www.sambafoot.com/en/players/332_Paulo_Cesar_Caju.html I chose Pepe instead because I wanted another pure goalscorer and already had Zizinho creating, but Caju was so good that I almost changed my formation (to a 3 man backline) just to get him in. 4 x Bola de Prata during an era when there was major competition for his spot.
it's a shame because i think in any other era, he wouldve been an undisputable starter for brazil. he was always plagued by attitude problems, much like a player who reminds me a lot of him...rivaldo.
i really wish i could watch the game...at work now. at the very least, if only i had deportes so i could tivo it. oh well. i might see if i can catch some of the game at the pub during my lunch break.
Sounds right since kaushik picked early today!!! I'm back and will be adding some comments throughout the day. PM me if anyone has questions or wants to proxy their last pick. Also, I have received one suggestion on how to handle auriverde's team. Other suggestions are welcome.

After discussing a lot of historical right-backs with some of the drafters here, I instead went with my club sympathies and chose Amantino Mancini. My team is complete with this pick, I only wish I knew as much as some of the folks here! It's been a great learning experience though. Squadra Sempre -----------------R. Thanks ASF. With a Brazilian draft it is always tempting to go for the most skilled players who put up incredible numbers, but every team needs balance and players who do the dirty work. That is key to every succesful team, I think we all know that. A lot of us have offensive fire power but what I'm really happy with looking at my team is the defense and the balance like you pointed out.I really think all of us did a great job and the judges will have a tough time picking the best team, because in the end I don't think there is a true right or wrong answer.
This is not meant as crticism, just genuine puzzlement and curiosity... With everyone else, I was able to predict the formation reasonably well given the players they took, but with bennis I am at a loss. I was almost sure you were going to take a left back this turn, but you took another CB. This leaves you with: 3 CBs, 1 RB, 1 RWB/RM, 1 DM, 1 CM/AM, 1 AM/SS, 1 AM/LW/SS, and 1 CF ---------------GK---------------- --------------------------------- ---------CB------CB-----CB------ --RB----------------------------- -----------------DM------------- ---------CM--------------------- --RM---------------------------- ----------------AM-------------- -------------------------LW----- -----------CF-------------------- Is this what you have in mind?
so i'm on the clock... i'm extremely tempted to take one particular player. it's a bit tough. im either crazy to draft him...or crazy to skip him. haha. i'll sort out my thoughts in the next 30 mins or so.
well i couldnt resist. Renato Gaúcho it is! I was extremely surprised he lasted this far. He was probably worthy of being picked a few rounds ago. There is a lot of excellent value around with our final picks. However, I'm sure a lot of this has to do with auriverde's absence. If we had an extra team drafting, players like Caju and Renato would definitely not have been available in this final round. Either way, I'm satisfied with my team. A bit on the offensive side, but hey, I've always been a fan of our style of play. Our best teams have always been known for their relatively modest defenses, even the 1970 one. I dont mind that. With Lima as my curinga, I feel like I'm left with an offensive and versatile team. I can drop Lima at central defender and have a 3 man back-line. Then, I can move up R. Carlos to left midfield and push back Renato Gaucho to right midfield. Piazza will be there, as always, anchoring the midfield. Kaka and Rai can partner in a more offensive role, although I assume I'd put Kaka a bit ahead of Rai. And of course, a very nice and prolific forward line of Fried, arguably Brazil's leading goalscorer, and Romario. I think they are perfect compliments...Fried as a more agile forward a la Robinho (although with more scoring capabilities), and Romario, as well, Romario...a guy who just plants his ass in front of the goal and scores. -------Fried----Romario------- ------------------Renato Gaucho ------Kaka------------------- -----------------Rai------ ---------Piazza(c)------------- R. Carlos--------------------Lima -----Augusto---Roberto Dias----- -----------Taffarel--------
Ok, I finished my team. My last choice may not be a craque, but I believe he is the complimentary player who will help complete my team. To be honest, I had never heard of Cacapava before this draft. But I had heard of the legendary Inter teams from the 70's, and as I picked Falcao and Carpeggiani, I decided to research how that midfield played. What I learned is that Cacapava was the player who protected his two talented teammates, allowing them the freedom to attack more. I thought of looking for a better known and perhaps more talented player for that same role, but I finally decided to go with the real thing, going with what worked for Inter, and helped them win all those titles. Not only Cacapava can protect my other midfielders, but he will allow my laterals to join the attack knowing that there is an implacable defensive force covering for them.
My Squad will look something like this: ......................Manga.......................... ............Da Ghia.........Julio Cesar........... Jorginho..................................Marinho Chagas .....................Cacapava....................... .............Carpegiani.......Falcao............... ...........................Dirceu..................... .................Muller....Valentim................. Julio Cesar and Da Ghia as zone markers. Jorginho and M.Chagas as laterals who can join the attack. Cacapava with defensive duties covering for the laterals and man marking if necesary. Carpegiani polifunctional, Falcao working his magic, with Dirceu also as organizer (and he can also play on the left), and up front Muller on the right as a striker who can play wide and withdrawn, and Valentim as the target man in the penalty area.
-------------------------------Castilho---------------------------------- ----------------------Djalma Dias----------Rui Campos------------------- -----Djalma Santos--------------------------------------Geraldo Scotto-- ------------------------------Zé Carlos---------------------------------- ------------------------------Sócartes---------------------------------- ------Amarildo-----------------------------------------Tesourinha-------- ----------------------Careca---------------Evaristo---------------------- 4-4-2, with some attacking flavor since my defense is pretty solid. I have two very technical centrebacks in Dias and Campos. My laterais will stay and defend considering I have the best RB in Djalma Santos and an execellent marker in Scotto. Ze Carlos can also help defensively and feed the ball up to Socrates and the attack. Amarildo and Tesourinha can dribble down the wing and attack on goal or cross it in to one of my lethal strikers.
This is the player I had him on my all-time draft. It is amazing that he lasted so long in the Brazil draft.
He is a great player... but that is one particularity of running an all time draft for Brasil, for any player (other than O Rei and a few others) you can always find several other craques. There are a few left wingers who many Brasilian football historians feel were more gifted than Zagallo (as players), but aren't as widely known internationally -- the two most notable ones are Pepe and Canhoteiro. Combine this with the fact that many of us aren't playing traditional pontas and you can see why Zagallo could be taken a lot later than we would have been had everyone been using a formation that required such a player (or in the all time draft). A Zagallo played out of position may have been an inferior option to a specialist in that position. Likewise, people had different strategies for obtaining players: there were those that went after strikers first, others who grabbed midfielders, and some others who took defenders. With the exception of the first two rounds, you cannot read too much into the order of selection... particularly in the last few, where many that could have gone much sooner were finally taken. Tons of players remain that arguably should have been in the draft.
