Bradley says Man U won't play Juve on the fake stuff:

"I've been told by a good source that Manchester United has already said it will not play Juventus at Giants Stadium on FieldTurf."

I wonder how the NJ authority is going to handle this? Are they going to break out the grass tray system?

I think the obvious answer is to move the game to DC and play at RFK. ;) But I'm a little biased.

i'm all for his theory that the little fish will get beat on. :)

by the way ... i meant carlos ruiz will get physical treatment. Not ... you know, beating the fish.

"4. Dallas Burn fans are going to hate me for saying this, but my perennial MLS Cup dead-bolt-lock favorites are looking awfully good again."

Its okay by me. We think we look pretty good again too. And if we can land Nunez and not give away the farm doing so, yeah - our last game could and should be at the Depot. Our expectations are high too.

And if were playing on grass at the Cotton Bowl this season, I would be drunk with anticipation - but as it is I am merely tipsy.

"I say this all the time, but the one thing I notice when I watch games from Europe on Fox, and compare them to MLS games, is the players' faces. On the Euro faces, I see bones, tight skin. On too many American faces, I see puffiness, even some double chins. Just an observation."

First player I thought of: Danny Califf.

I don't remember any double chins, unless it's Stoichkov or Etch or one of the other real older dudes.

    Sigi on the other hand...

I didn't see a way to e-mail Jeff on there, so maybe he'll pop in here for comments from the peanut gallery.

Jeff, Freddy is 13...I just corrected Bergin on this yesterday, so it's fresh in my mind. At ussoccer.com, his birth date is 6-2-89.

As for the Mathis story...I've been saying for a while that Mathis is as good a bet for this year's MVP as any player out there. He really should be motivated, and if he's motivated and healthy, he'll be great. He's playing for a better coach, and the team should be alot better. And if it comes down to a close vote, he'll get a few extra points for the "comeback player" aspect of it.

My other leading candidate would be Landon. The Quakes got gutted, so if they have a good season, and Landon is leading the way, he'll get tons of votes from the "where would they be without him" line of reasoning.

I would like to add Ben Olsen to the "frontrunners for 2003 MLS MVP" awards.

Chris Gbandi and Nate Jacqua are my ROY favorites.

Burn are CLEARLY the team to beat. Again. Just like they are every year.

And every year, as if one cue, when push comes to shove, they seemed to get beaten.....

Heh heh, brilliant evidence of non-tight skin and the double chin.

    Is that Andy Kaufmann?

As for the FieldTurf spat, i'm sure the resident Apologists will come out and say "But these players don't know what they're talking about! FieldTurf is good! We know what's best for them!"

The management in Rochester is seriously considering going with plastic for "financial reasons". I hope they consider what National team players and big-time teams have to say on the matter.

Notice both LD and TT are referred to as relentless workers...both played in Deutschland. Maybe sitting the bench over there is better than we think! Any news on Digiamarino's fitness?

I have always maintained that starting out one's career (late teens) in a highly respected European club is not a waste of time. I think that it imbues a player with the right attitude, maturity, motivation, etc. When they come back to MLS, they know how to be professionals.

Sounds like Fishy will be generating plenty of PK's and cards for opposing players.

The Rapids will be happy to provide the beating. Again. Just like they did last year.

Don't be too sure about that. Last season Twellman took one hell of a beating, again and again and almost never earned a PK call. MLS Refs do not protect forwards---period!

If LD has Armstrongesque levels of fitness, what does Ben Olsen have? Crystal Meth levels of fitness?

I think Benny should try the Tour de France during his freetime this season. I see him winning the race.

Sigi raises the chin-to-body ratio in MLS to 3:1 all on his own.

benny is bigger than donovan or armstrong

ld and armstrong share the same body sizes (although lance is a few inches taller)... both are thoroughly ripped

benny is all hustle as well, but i've just never seen the same ripped, almost gaunt look, of ld and armstrong

I am tired of hearing about how Dallas is a foreign team. Yes, the Burn have quite a few foreigners. Other teams also have plenty of non-americans. For example, DC United has Reyes, Nelson, Hristo, Quintinilla, Kovalenko, Etch and Ivanov dotting their roster. Yet no one mentions that. Why am I bringing up the point? This is not the first time I have heard that statement. Bruce Arena has said the same thing.

Dallas has many US players contributing. Kreis, Broome, Rhine, Deering and Suarez are an integral part of the roster. On top of that, young americans who have tremedous potential will also be called to contribute. Players such as Johnson, Stone, Gbandi and Davis will be challenging for playing time.
