"If they ever find a passion for this sport, the nature of the nation suggests they will become a superpower to be reckoned with very quickly. "

These guys in Europe must be starting to get nervous...

Only if they are ignorant of the fact that, as a nation, we are quite a long way from finding that passion.

Yet we're already a soccer nation to be reckoned with, I reckon'.

If it ever finds a passion en masse, then that will make international football the USA's bitch. We are already not to be taken lightly, and that's without 'the masses' supporting us.

With the new half spot, we're certainly going to be around in future cup finals.

Yeah, but then we at bigsoccer and other faithful vanguard fan groups will be nothing but a tiny grain of sand on the beach of commercial US Soccer. When your office has a fantasy MLS league, you won't be unique any more in your love for the beautiful game. When multimillionaire brats cause all of the same problems they do here in other sports and in Europe, when the US wins every other world cup (?!!), the feeling of being at the edge of something really special won't be there any more. You'll just be another joe blow at the sports bar eating stale tortilla chips and drinking cheap beer, watching the game with everybody else.

Gascoigne, we should feel comfort in the fact that we were the trendsetters in this whole deal. If the nation embraces soccer like it does the other sports, that doesn't mean I'm giving up on soccer. I love it too much to do that.
