Falcon6, I think you are being unfair. McDonough didn't "hate" soccer. He was a minastream sports guy, typical of his generation. His main forte was the NFL, and he had more than a few run-ins with the Krafts over stuff like the stadium. He has written about the larger context of sports, and when appropriate, included the Revs/soccer in the equation. He did a "state of Boston Sports" last year that included the Revs, although in less detail than the big 4. Another example of this was "urinegate" where the designers of Gillette Stadium put in equal numbers of male and female bathrooms, despite the fact that Patriots' crowds are 80% male. This was an ongoing saga in his weekly column, and one week he devoted a story to the experiences of a Rev fan regarding the shoddy treatment of security.

At the end of the day, he was not a soccer "fan," but he gave it a fair shake, which is all you can ask for from these types of guys.

Falcon, are you trying to turn your yellow into a red?

Or did you forget that you already admitted on the Revs board that you had no clue what this guy ever thought or wrote about soccer?

To now act like you have read every piece of material he ever wrote on soccer is both disengenuous and sad.

    Re: **********MOD NOTE*************

Being a little sensative aren't we MOD?

If the guy hated soccer, he hated soccer, living or dead. His opinion is in print. Why should that be out of bounds or not "tolerated." Can I not talk a little smack about a Dickens novel at a book review?
    Same dif...

  6. After I asked that question on the revs board, Bruce answered me by saying this guy was no friend of soccer and never hesitated to show his hatred. Secondly, because someone dies you cant critique their life? So if I said Hitler was a bad person thats not appropriate because he is dead? Come on Monster your better than that.

There is a difference between critiquing someone's life or work and trolling every thread relating to someone with no basis for fact to back you up.

There's also a little thing called class. Sadly, you have none.

Because discussing Hitler is the same as discussing a recently dead sportswriter. Unbelievable.

If I thought falcon6 was gonna be around for a while, this would be my new sig.

Any comment I might have on falcon's common sense, class, or intelligence, would come across as a personal attack.

Falcon, again you allege he "hated" soccer, and you seem to think that saying "Well, a guy named Bruce S told me so..." is good enough proof. I don't know if your mother ever asked you, "If Bruce S told you to jump off a bridge..."

But Bruce S's word, with all due respect, is not enough for me. I ask you or your pal Bruce to come up with something tangeable that shows this "evidence" or shut the hell up. One or the other.

I disagreed with some of the views McDonough took on various subjects, but he was always worth reading. I can't recall any instance of him bashing soccer. He wasn't a fan, but he didn't hate the sport either.

Please do some research before posting statements like "He hated soccer and never hesitated to write about his hatred for it."

This statement is wrong on so many levels I don't know where to start.

    1) He did not hate soccer, he just had no love for it (and there is a huge difference)

    2) Never once in any of the HUNDREDS of articles I read from Will did he ever bash soccer. NEVER ONCE!.

As Tom mentioned, I disagreed with some of his opinions from time to time but in general they were never too far off base.

    3) Considering that he maybe wrote about soccer once a year, if that, your statement of him never hesitating to write about his hatred of soccer is just foolish.

If you want to have any credibility left on this site, you should write an apology in this thread noting that you never really read anything he wrote and just assumed, with no real evidence, that he was a Deford clone.

Let us ignore the lack of class you showed and simply concentrate on the fact that what you posted was factually incorrect, making you act EXACTLY like what you hate in Jim Rome and Frank Deford.

    Well said, Andy.

Falcon, you will need more than Justin's help to bail yourself out of this one.

All we can ask of the mainstream general sports guys is that they are fair regarding soccer. Treat the sport as you would any other. If the local team is crap, it would be irresponsible to sugar-coat it. If the team makes mistakes off the field, fair game. If he criticizes a team that happens to play soccer for these things, that does not make someone a "soccer basher."

Funny how you are holding guys like McDonough to a higher standard than you hold for yourself, by trashing a guy whose stuff you never read.

What little credibility you may have had, you've lost.

  16. You guys challenged me. How about a nice little game called: Find the article on the WWW. Rev up your search engines and let the competition begin. I will be back with a link. Gents.

If you are going to act like a tool you shall be treated like a tool.

From your direct words, "He hated soccer and never hesitated to write about his hatred for it."

It should not take any longer than a couple of hours to produce AT LEAST 20 or more CLEAR CUT, Will McDonough "I hate soccer" articles.

And I am being kind with only listing 20 looking at your quote "...and never hesitated to write about his hatred for it."

Anyone who thinks this should be able to provide article after article after article proving their point.
