Both games involve City, yes but both were instant classics and fun games to watch (from an offensive point of view at least). Still amazed to this day what a terrific team Monaco had managed to build back then. Also, the Falcao from that year was the one we'd hope to get when United got him in 2014. Obviously was too soon in terms of his recovery from his ACL injury: absolutely incredible in that game vs City.
Yep. That season showed Mourinho as the fraud that he is with the 3 finger salute after winning the EL. Embarrassing. He would have been better off saying something like, this is nice and all but our season is still a failure with our poor league performance and maybe we can use this to propel us forward.
Not a pro City post in any shape, form or fashion... If I remember correctly, they might have won those games, but they lost the ties on both occasions. Putting all tribalism aside (which admittedly is easier since they were ultimately eliminated on both instances), those are just fun games of football to watch.
Used to love that intro back in the day. Still preferred the one from the season or 2 before: same awesome theme but that was the one with Jay-Jay Okocha in it.
A genuine classic from a great tournament in 98. The first 15mins are just mental but the rest of the game is still top notch nonetheless. Good docu on the story of that game.
boredom fix → for UK viewers at least(?) One of our greats. One of the greats (i assume this is a Sky exclusive) https://www.skysports.com/football/...orts-about-cristiano-ronaldos-remarkable-life
I remember all the spitting between Rijkaard and Voeller in that one. On Irish tv at half time they paused the spit in mid air and were jokingly discussing how great the spit was.
Angry Rooney when he was younger was a risk on some level (and perhaps even a liability on occasion). But conversely, that's also when he was a great threat to the oppo as he simply did not care and did not hesitate to try what could be seen as foolish or near impossible (like his volley vs Newcastle for example, my favorite goal of his). I liked angry Rooney from the early part of his career personally. His celebration in front of the Kop in this match was a thing a beauty.
Streaming today later on the app, the 2009 CL semi 2nd leg vs Arsenal. Another game vs that lot that I particularly enjoyed: Arsenal were very confident they'd be able to overturn United's 1-0 win from the first leg. The Emirates was hot and pumped up: we all know what happened next...
If you have ESPN+ these are some excellent 30 for 30 documentaries: https://www.espn.com/watch/collections/8963/soccer
I don't know if anyone here watches the Champions. Bleacher Report has been putting it out since their parent company got the CL rights. A bit like their Game of Zones show, but reality tv based. I love it. This is the theme song video with clips from the episodes released so far, but if you follow the links in the video, you can watch all the episodes so far:
Our first losing effort unfortunately against in all honesty, a truly exceptional Barca team at the time. This one, more than the 2011 loss, was the more disappointing in my view because I believe that had Fletcher been available to play, things might have gone differently. His tenacity, energy and high workrate might have help disrupt Barca's passing game (and Carrick, Giggs and Ando wouldn't have been overwhelmed the way they were). But with that motivation vid Pep showed his guys right before kickoff, perhaps they were never going to lose anyhow (inspired touch from Pep)... Sidenote, the white kit we wore that day is still one of my favorite in recent years (greats years between 06 and 09 with those AIG sponsored Nike kits btw).
When Mourinho and Real got destroyed at the Nou Camp... Mourinho won titles subsequently but it's pretty clear that his time in Spain left a big time mark on him: he never was the same after his La Liga stint.
Isn't that the one that old Trafford gave him a standing ovation?? I was talking about it a few days ago.
