We played so much better in that game than the final.

I don’t know. I cancelled my sub after one year because all they had were highlights. I didn’t know whether they had it posted but that it should be on there. Lol

I forgot about this, and that all this season's games are still available. I might watch all the Bruno games again. And the Chelsea games, Spurs game etc. So annoyed we missed out on giving them a return shellacking. We could have purged the game of the real virus. And if we wanted the authentic Spurs home game experience we could have just booed as we watched.

After the embarrassment that was France 98, the boys definitely made up for it 4yrs later. A great adventure that all started when the team shocked the world by beating Portugal in their opener. They really could have booked a semi final berth, with just a little more luck vs Germany.
Credit has to go to Arena though for that campaign also: he was so good back then, particularly from a tactical point of view. Not the best of WCs as a whole, but surely the best one from the US in recent years.

Why? What was good about it and what was deficient in the other since?

02 was good because a lot of teams who werent expected to do well, did well. South Korea, Turkey, Senegal, USA all did really well.

It was also fun to watch Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho play together. Michael Ballack's coming out party to the world. Klose as well.

06 was disappointed in the KO rounds. Boring. This was probably Argentina's best team since then.

2010 was boring Spain and boring defensive minded Netherlands. Best thing about this tournament was

2014 group stages started out good, then is fizzled out as time went on

2018 was the next best WC since 02.

When they're happening, all WCs by and large are entertaining and fun. Looking back and with the benefit of hindsight and comparison, some definitely stand out above others.
My favorites from the ones I've seen are: 82 (my first), 86, 94, 98, 18. 2010 is my least favorite and 90, 02, 06 and 14 are somewhere in between for various reasons.

Look at the team ffs. Van Bommel and De Jong, two hatchet men in center midfield. Dirk Kuyt playing the Park Ki Sung role. Basically playing for his contribution on defense, compared to the players they had on the bench.

On top of all that, Bert Van Marwijk was constantly criticized on all fronts for the way he teams set up.

they averaged just about 2 goals a game and tried to win every single one.

    i 1000% disagree

I think it was very much deliberate on Dinho's part. Audacious sure, but he meant it all the same: I believe he went for goal precisely because it was expected he would whip it in the box. That's why Seaman was caught out: he was looking to go forward and attack the ball and that's how Dinho got him (and he was left scrambling backwards).
And even if one wants to believe he shanked his shot very badly (which is hard to believe for someone who was so good and precise with the ball), he was the luckiest guy to score from a mishit like that.

Jose Mourinho's teams scored goals. They also always tried to win. He still gets called a defensive coach.

When you compare the way the Euro 2008 team played, then its a no brainer.

lol none of those articles label them defensive minded.

the first one suggests tactical nous and solidity at worst

the second is hardly even an article to begin with and says "attacking responsibly" which supports what i said and what actually happened

the third article argues they fixed defensive frailties which isn't a crime.

none of the three suggest there was no emphasis on attack either. you can keep going with this hyperbole but none of that suggests defensive and you won't change my mind. i know what i saw.

just because you weren't entertained doesn't mean the approach was a crime or even remotely defensive. every team uses defenders or defensive players and there is no rule or law against it. come on now

You're in denial and being defensive, because you're biased for the Dutch team. You're ignoring all the critics at the time and the eye test. You're also ignoring the facts.

Since i wont change your mind...

so i too am defensive now.

am i in denial or are you unable to separate entertainment from tactics and strategy? you're behaving as if two defensive minded mids that allow the attackers to go ham is a crime against football
