I'd say it's like "The Californians of Los Angeles" not "from" (Sorry for being a little nitpicky).

It's not any weirder than some of our professional sports teams. "The Los Angeles Angels" is "The The Angels Angels" when you translate the Spanish (or "Los Los Angeles Angeles" if you translate the English). Which is a lot worse in my opinion.

You might be true but, in such a case, in french it is hard to know if "de" means a belonging or an origin. I feel that it is more an origin because it is for me an elliptic way to say "Girondins qui sont de (are from) Bordeaux"
But I confess that I hesitated on how to translate !

Anyway, indeed, your examples are much weirder and suck lol

to answer the question, girondins is not a nickname for the team in the same way giants, tigers or mighty ducks are. it is part of the official club name FOOTBALL CLUB DES GIRONDINS DE BORDEAUX (in the score window of french telecasts you'll see not BOR but FCGB).

as for many clubs, the present name is the result of different mergers of clubs back before any of us were born, in this case Girondins Guyenne Sport and Bordeaux FC.

    voila!

I always wondered what Girondins meant. I had asked a French guy once and he didn't
    have a clue.

Anyway guys, do any of you know where I can download Gourcuff's goal against PSG in Hi Def? Thanks.

as an unimpartial observer i retain this from FCGB-ASSE:

    1) i agree in principle with freddie fautrel not applying the "double peine" but that penalty was the crucial point of the game: if chamakh gets a red (110% intentional handball) and bergessio scores his péno (missing it was the only thing i saw him do in the time he was on the pitch) i'm confident sainté wins.

    2) two GREAT FK's as different from each other as they can be, wendel's a picture-perfect curl over the wall, sako's a missile that i expected to go right hrough the back of the net.

    3) it's normal to get gobbledygook and platitudes when you stick a mike under a player's nose when he comes off. but friggin' hell paga, do we really need SIX MINUTES of banality just because it's gourcuff?

    4) bordeaux has a knack of always having the player in L1 i hate the most; jurietti, then henrique... they're on the bench now but that vicious little weasel chalmé is worse than both combined. his reaction when HE commits a foul could be cardable for simulation. brandao getting run over by a bus would give me the uncontrollable giggles but for chalmé it would be streaming tears of joy.

I didn't watch the game I was watching Barca- Atletico instead (frankly i've seen les girondins play like over dozen times already this season and i'm sick of them :)). Doesn't look like any uploaded the highlight this week either. Can someone care to comment a bit more on this Chamakh red/peno incident?

sainté was very anemic in the first half hour and went down 2-0 by what people call une logique impitoyable. but to their credit started playing harder when many would have rolled over. reducing the lead just before half was only surprising because ASSE had so completely wasted so many juicy dead balls in the preceding 10'.

the second half was all green with the same defect: promising setpieces and crosses all poorly done until one absolutely spot-on for a sainté attacker's head... which chamakh blithely knocked away with an outstretched arm. completely intentional, no subterfuge: he was ready to accept penalty and card to give carrasso a chance to keep the side ahead because on that cross he had none.

my general feeling has always been against the double sentencing of PK+RC so don't really have a big complaint there. the key is bergessio missing the péno, and by a country mile (how can a player who looked so good last fall be such a chèvre? and make no mistake he was horrible the whole time he was on the pitch).

that miss gave the girondins wings. if not for that i'd have bet money on ASSE even going ahead, they looked that good and bordeaux that poor.

note in passing that there was another hand ball, by trémoulinas, but that was only technically a penalty; in real time it was imperceptible, only on a replay of the action in its entirety does one realize it brushed his hand.

The Coupe de Ligue final will be Bordeaux vs. OM. A pretty useless competition if you ask me but at least there will be over 75,000 roaring fans at the match.

again, the game turned on a call favoring bordeaux, in the opposite logic of chamakh not getting tossed against ASSE.

this time it was koscielny that fouled chamakh... and turpin, who had a horrible night, pointed to the spot and pulled out a red card... i have no explanation for either.

first, the foul was just outside the area. second, it was neither severe nor could be cosidered to "annihilate a chance to score" (the real guideline people often refer to as "last defender") a yellow card, maybe. but a simple free kick and NO card would have been perfectly understandable. to make such a horrible call on 23' throws the match (which lorient was winning 1-0) into a cocked hat. having to play at 10, and without one of your best defenders was a tough order for les merlus, and though you can say 4-1 is sans appel, it was only 2-1 with 10 minutes to play...

now i have to root for OM for the first time in my life (well, since i moved to lyon anyway.) outside european matches!

Appears like GdB is the new darling of ligue1, everything seems to go their way. Feed bad for les Merlus, the league cup is good for letting the smaller clubs get a good crack at some silverware. It has it's place, and it's good for the fans to see their boys lift up anything. I'm still amazed that goal was allowed in the OM game when he barreled into Mandanda. That's what sucess brings i suppose. I too will have to grudgingly cheer for OM.

Its great for the smaller clubs to win a trophy but teams like BDX and OM are "protected" and given byes so whats the point really ?

My dream is to see a fully professional National, reduce L1, L2, and Nat. to 18 teams each, and have a 54 team CdL.

Speaking of being the new darlings of ligue 1, I saw not one, but TWO different people wearing Girodins jersies on my campus this week! How about that. I've never even seen someone wearing a Lyonnais jersey during our 7 year win streak.....one or two PSGs, one monaco and maybe an OM shirt, im not sure. And that's all I can remember.

Alou will miss the Olympiakos match and Plasil is still doubtful. Losing them both would be a huge blow. Alou is one of their 3 best players and Plasil has been great this year.

Hello Bordeaux supporters! here is a panathinaikos fan...
I wish good luck to Bordeaux today, please beat that Olympiakos... Currently, I think that Bordeaux is not in a good condition, but Olympiakos is not in a good condition either.
You should know that most of the Greeks today are with Bordeaux, and especially the Panathinaikos fans. Please dont let them cheer today, I will have my fingers crossed!

    How lucky you are...
I won't be able to watch the match in France because it is broadcasted on a channel I don't have...Yeah this is the first soccer channel in France but this is too expensive for me atm...
Well, I am searching for a good streaming link that is not from "Canal +" because I know by experience that streaming links easily findable by french people will be overcrowded.

So, if someone come here and have a streaming link from an unknown channel, I want it :p

Nevertheless, I will go to the the Stadium to see Bordeaux-Olympiakos for the home match :)

By the way, I wanted to ask you before, holden, how did you become a Bordeaux fan ? This is a club which has not so much popularity compared to Marseille, Lyon or PSG and I am kinda curious to know how an american people can become a Bordeaux fan !

LOL, well, I am a Bordeaux fan who wants the victory of Panathinaikos over AS Roma. I don't like italian teams excepted AS Livorno (and I am also neutral towards Inter). I hope that Cissé will score a hat trick xD
But, personnaly, in European competition, I am for all french teams even Marseille and Lyon :p

hahaha thanks you WaterSide! well we beat them once 3-2 in athens, but things will be tough in Rome! :p

Well things here in greece are very different! For example, Panathinaikos fans support all greek teams too EXCEPT Olympiakos! and the opposite lol

You should know that Olympiakos fans think that they will beat Bordeaux tonight! So give them a lesson, even a draw will be fine! I am sure they cant beat you in France! The match will not be easy for Bordaux since the stadium atmospere will be really very hot. But I hope you will beat them and give us a smile too!

Go Bordeaux GO! BTW Bordeaux red wine is one of my favourite! :p

Go Panathinaikos vs Roma on thursday :p

By the way, I think I'd rather like ούζο than red wine LOL

frankly bordeaux have looked better. perhaps not lately but once again they showed none of the qualities that got them where they are.

last night, against a team with little going for them aside from desire they lacked even that. the days are past when girondins relied primarily on pressuring their opponents physically but they still have that in their bag of tricks if they didn't seem either too proud or too lazy to haul it out. olypiamkos pushed them all over the field for the first 30'.

if bordeaux had been able to roll out the jeu léché, the quick and accurate passing that brought them out of the juriessic age, there would have been no problem, but they were curiously inept. wendel couldn't put a foot right, chamakh looked anemic, and they really miss having gourcuff out there. for proof, look at what happens when he actually plays: they score! most uncharacteristically of all, the fullbacks who have been their motor for so long were feckless at both ends, on defense saved only by the greeks' considerable technical inferiority, going forward unable to either make or haul in passes. only ciani (who besides scoring had to cover for both planus and chalmé) and carrasso looked good, no one else was even decent.

in the second half they showed the drive that was absent in the first, but winning the ball more only seemed to allow them to make more mistakes and more bad decisions.

lolo needs to do some serious, serious buttkicking and he needs to start this morning. his team will only be able to trust to blind luck for so long. if they keep playing like they have all february, they will NOT get by olympiakos, and that's just for starters: bye-bye 5 point lead*, bye-bye mustache cup final, bye-bye everything. then chamakh, fernando and gourcuff will be in for unpleasant surprises when they find out the arsenals and barças of this world are not extremely interested in players who underperform this shockingly.

*that's what they have on lille, but even OL or OM could still pass them up: montpellier has come a long way but even so will not be there at the end.
