Egypt, coached by the former United States coach Bob Bradley, has failed to qualify for its second successive Africa Cup of Nations after a 1-1 draw at the Central African Republic ensured that Egypt missed out, 4-3 on aggregate.

After a 3-2 win in Egypt, Central African Republic scored first Saturday in Bangui on Foxi Kethevoama’s 23rd-minute header at the back post. That left Egypt needing three goals to advance to the final round of qualifying for next year’s tournament in South Africa.
Bradley was hired after Egypt failed to make this year’s finals.

Too early to be fired, but anything can happen, he has done a lot with Egypt and tried his best to control his team while the whole country went black.

Aren't they still in the middle of WC qualifying as well? I'd imagine Egypt to wait and see if Bradley gets them qualified for that before letting him go.

Yes, and they won their first two games of a six game group stage. They beat Guinea and Mozambique. Their next WCQ is in March.

I'd like to agree with you, but soccer coaches get fired so often that you never know if he will be fired soon.

They didn't qualify last time either, and the revolution and soccer massacre affected things just a little.

Ah, RoboBob, back in the ol' hotseat. Honestly, I admire Bradley's courage in accepting the post to begin with. It is not just a highly challenging football position, it is entering as a Yank into the viciously political maelstrom that is contemporary Islam. It takes guts.
In terms of the organization of the national team, and setting up better methods for fitness and physical training, I think he had much to offer Egypt. As always, the tactical and strategic side of the game would be one he would need to do most in to impress the citizens.....and these are not citizens known for gladly taking the long term view to football. If there are political/cultural divisions among the players on the team, as surely there are for now, it would make it extremely difficult for Bradley to get them to sustain the structural , team oriented, "work for all", attitude needed for his sense of the game. I don't know if he can get them qualified for the WC [not many can do so, out of Africa], and it on paper looks bad that Egypt did not qualify for the African Cup......
My guess is that he would be allowed keep his position, by the national FA, as long as the WC qualifying goes well [or until Morsi steps in and decides a Yank is more vice than virtue in terms of the image of the coming rule of the Muslim Brotherhood].
Of course he may choose to simply let go of that live wire... but letting go, without a viable other option, is not the hallmark of BB.

They hired bob to qualify for the world cup. They won both qualifiers so far so I don't see the problem. Watch the clips, read the articles, see their expressions. Bob is not only doing work on field he's doing it off field. The country is strung tight, they play their home games in empty stadiums and their league has been stopped for some time now. Their are a lot of factors to add into the equation. Things are not black and white

In the end by failing to qualify for this Egypt have missed the African cup for half a decade at least 2010-2015. What a fall! Losing out to Central African Republic ranked 93 in the world will hurt even more. I believe if he qualifies for the world cup all will be forgiven. The conditions he is working under is very difficult(No league football for his players) so, the results are not too poor but, he may still get fired as this is a failure. If we fired him after a round of 16 exit and a gold cup final "failure" then, this would seem to be much worse!

they were champions in 2010. they have only not qualified for ONE ACN in the past 6 years and they were 3 time champions.

The league was shut down after the Port Said massacre.

They played the home leg in an empty stadium.

    Disappointing, yes. Pathetic, no.

We'll see if six points in two games in WCQ trumps elimination from the AFCON.

    Maybe. Maybe not.

Of course, I'm an apologist...as any brother would be.

No doubt. Bob knows what he signed up for, and he knew it wouldn't be easy.

Easy to use harsh words like "pathetic" and "fail."

Hard to actually do the job, ya know?

Harsh? I guess. When you have a 3 time champion there are expectations.

But it is what it is. It is not an easy task to coach any team. Thought bob did an outstanding job with the US. It was just his time to go.

Lets be fair to Bob though. A team that won all those cups but, failed to qualify for the world cup(were it actually counts) for a quarter of a century was a hugely flawed team(a one show team). Maybe to fix the problems will take missing out on the African cup in order to bring real change. I believe Egypt qualified for the Olympics so, if they do well there he can use players from that team.

Extraordinarily difficult to qualify for the world cup from africa. few teams do. it is what it is.

But African Cup of Nations is much much easier to qualify for.

    not good tidings.

Have you followed their players? The 2010 AFCON championship (I was there with ESPN) was the final, crowning moment for their Golden Generation. There's a reason Egypt didn't qualify in 2012. It's a transition period, a time to integrate new, young players into what was an aging team. Bob has been trying to move new blood into the team, but when the league shut down (almost all Egyptian players play in the domestic league), it made the job much harder. But, as they say, it's all part of it.

And, yeah, I'd say "harsh" is fair when using words like "pathetic."

Of course, message board rhetoric tends to be a lot of tough guy talk.

Results will make everyone happy or mad. That loss will have people on edge right now as fair or not that's the way it goes. But, if he can qualify for the World Cup, all will be forgiven and his reputation around the world will rise substantially. Leading a team to their first cup under such difficult circumstances would rightfully be seen as a major accomplishment. It really is tough the way he is having to work with player who don't even have a functioning league to play with, but those are the cards he was dealt and has to play with. Shame that it may bite him in the ass. He falls off the pace for qualification and I wouldn't be surprised to see him let go, even if the reality is that things are beyond his control.

But really, does Egypt expect to qualify? They haven't before and with their league and players in chaos it seems a bit ambitious to expect qualification. I really don't know what the expectations are like right now in Egypt where it matters.

As I've said, in the eyes of fans, you're as good as today, that's all.

African countries change coaches like they change their socks. All part of the deal.

Sorry to be so defensive. But, you know...
