Thanks to the guys who responded to my first blast from the past. It looks from the poll that I'm definitely wrong about soccer being at its best in the 70s and to underline that view I had a chat with Duncan McKenzie - ex Leeds and Nottingham Forest supremo - yesterday. Nope, I'm not making it up. I happened to be sat at his table during a soccer fund raising do. Duncan, says never mind the Dennis Laws, Charlton's and the Bests. Yes they were great players, but the Beatties, Owens and - oh what's the name of that Frenchman who plays for Arsenal? - are better players. Duncan - a 40 fags a day man in his soccer prime - says todays players are fitter and better athletes. He says the pitches are a dream to play on and the tactics are superior. However, the one area there has been no advancement is in the refereeing. He has no truck the refs who have their own agents and their kit sponsored. Some sending offs are "stage managed" he claims. I began this debate having come across my old Goal magazine collection, which I have just started to auction on the www.freeserve.co.uk site. And guess who features in edition 148. Yep it's Duncan McKenzie. Small world.
