Agreed. He had a great game against Wales a couple of years ago but other than that he's pretty much sucked whenever he played in the middle. But knowing our board they probably see him as the long-term replacement for Ze. Putting Schweini in the middle has disaster written all over it.

How many times in the national team has he played in the past 2 years in the middle? He played solid in the middle vs England too, in fact once he was in the middle they stopped running through us. He played vs Czechs in the middle where everyone sucked and was pretty bad. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying him playing in the middle is guaranteed that he will shine, but it's worth a try.

If they are really planning on putting him as a replacement for Ze Roberto, they should at least test him out for more than 2-3 games this season to see if it works. You shouldn't hope/guess he will work there and wait until next season to see if the move makes any sense.

Well....I don't think he is shit per se;) but he really appears to be something of a square peg right now. He has a package of skills obviously, but I really don't see where he fits on this team right now.

I see Equilibriums point about trying him out in the middle for 2 or 3 games though.

    just saw the accident.

I don't have anything good to say..so I'll not say anything, but simply hope that this wasn't really representative of the players.

schweiny in a 2 man central midfield won't work. to much responsibility for him.

if he's to play centrally then it should be in a 3 man cm, in a 433/451 or a 352.

I completely disagree. And I know I am in the minority on this but hear me out.

    a) Bastian Schweinsteiger has talent, and we all know this. Perhaps he is a victim of his own hype (aka Lucas Podolski) and his worth is highly overated, also a largely debated topic on these boards. But the fact remains he has the talent to be a part of some system. His biggest issue has been consistancy over the long haul in any position. He continually fails to impress in a wide role, which Bayern seem hell-bent on making him. He has no creativity wide, is uable to get into the corners of the field and beat people, tens to float into the center or top of the area, is more willing to play short keep possesion than finish from range. He is excellent in recovering into his defensive shape once we have lost the ball. In essence, the most overhyped thing about him is his supposed 'flair' on the ball.... he is your stereotypical boring holding midfielder. Think a younger MVB with less experience.

    b) we have yet to really see Bastian play at all in back-to-back-to-back matches in a central role for Bayern, so how can anyone truly have an opinion for or against it? My stance for it are purely based on what I look for in my own coaching environment for players in those central roles (which I see in Piggy), and the few times he has stepped into that role for the national team and on the odd occasion for Bayern. But to say he doesn't belong there without ever seeing how he would fit in that role with the current or future side at Bayern simply seems a bit close minded to me. I like to keep my options open as a coach and viewer and fan, and versatility goes a long way with me... players that I know can interchange positions when necessary. Bastian has this ability when called upon.

    c) if Bastian were to play in the center, he would be in the holding role with the present squad, not in Ze Roberto's role, but MVB's. This is my opinion. I would put a leash on his and just have him play in the Hargreaves role of old. Once Tymoschuk arrives and Ze eventually fades out of the picture down the road (in anther season or two), his role could become that of the more creative player, but there are too many unknowns between know and then. Will we have the same coach with the same tactical philosopy as now? Will we still run things through our left midfielder or will he be playing in another league/country by then? etc, etc. My perspective is what would his role be if given the opportunity to play in the center with this team and potentially next season.

Whether he will play in the center or not, who knows. I just give the lad a chance and see what comes of it. Good be the best decision made or the worst, but one will never know if it is never given a shot to flourish.

Eiss. Did you consider that maybe they've done this in training and it just doesn't work???

Yes, as that would be the first place you would think this would happen. And clearly since we don't see it happening now, it must not have clicked in training. It would however have been interesting to at least have seen this transition in some tuneup matches then if it was actually trained. No better way to evaluate what transpires in training than to put it in the game. Since we have not seen that, leads me to believe that it hasn't been worked on much in training or it was such a disaster that it never will see the light of day. LOL! :)

I just in my own mind see him to be a natural candidate for a holding midfielder. This is a position that has easily been awarded to players of much more expertise in experience and age (hence, Ze Roberto and MVB at Bayern). So I fully understand that this may not take place until later in his career, so now is not of the importance I guess.

One day, I have a feeling, one day... it will happen.
