So Bill O'Reilly had a brief segment on the USA/Mexico Olympic match. Obviously, he wasnt too happy with the way the crowd reacted to our Nat'l Anthem and the chants that followed.

Of course he was speaking with a Latin American foundation-type guy who basically said its just a soccer game and don't read anything into it....

Anyways, i doubt Bill is aware of the other great "acts of kindness" that the US team receives...

Since he always asks for commentary on his topics, i thought i'd post his email...

Couldnt find the segment online yet...

Already done. And "pithy" as well. ;-)

Let's face it, Bill is going to find any excuse to trash Mexico. "Osama, Osama" must have been the golden ticket.

Great, just what we need: O'Reilly yammering about soccer. Is he jealous that Limbaugh got a spot on ESPN's football show?

Anyway, I imagine the implication was that anti-Americanism or something unique to us being picked on. Tunisian fans booed Guinea's national anthem during their African Nations Cup game. Not classy, but hardly unique.

    I love that Simpson's line...
Homer: Marge, did you see any Oompa Loompas?
Marge: One, but it was in a cage and it wasn't moving.

As I have stated on other posts, the mexican fans may have done us a great service. Maybe now Americans will start attending games in the US to support our teams. I think many of you are really missing the point. When people like Bill O'Reilly(whether you like him or not) mention that our team and he is talking in a collective sense are being booed then it is an attack on all Americans. If history proves anything about the US, we are a patriotic lot and when somebody takes a cheap shot at a representative of our country we all get offended. The trick is how do we get turn this outrage into tangible support for our teams.

O'Reilly is an egotist and goes off half-cocked too often...bit he is dead-on concerning a lot of issues, and no, he is not a right-winger, but is someone with conservative values.

He was basically just jumping on the story to sensationalize it and I for one am glad that someone in the US media gave a damn, no matter why, for once.

    Thanks, Bill.

When it comes to soccer in the US, there is no such thing as "bad publicity." BOR may be caustic at times but he does get folks up and waving the flag. Maybe a few more of them will start waving it at a soccer game.

    I agree.

I dont get a chance to listen to BOR very often, but any mention of US soccer is good, plus we know that it wont be US bashing like some other sports writers. If it makes people more aware of the game great as people should be out waving the flag at every game.

I've always waited for right wing commentators to latch onto the way US fans/team are treated in Latin America to rally around the team, at least to not bash the game as much. Nothing does the right wing heart as much good as the thought of "our boys" fighting off cruel, cheating, angry Latin hordes. Not that I think any of that's a good thing, but just waited for it is all.

I still can't decide if O'reilly is a halfwit, and idiot or an imbecile and it is driving me crazy, anyone have any clarification on this. He does offer some form of amusment, especially the time he prounounced paradigm parra-diggum.

Oh yea, that's what we want, a bunch of flag waving yahoos going to matches that don't give a shite about soccer. Is that support for our sport, or a US pep rally? you guys are too desperate.

Face it, around most of the world, the US are seen as imperialist bullies that buy their own corrupt polaticians with our dollars or scare them with our weapons. And soccer matches, especially in South America have a tradition of fans saying whatever they can to try to distract and upset opposing players with chants about their mother's sexual preferences or the origins of their ancestors. The righteous indignatio on this thread is pretty thin-skinned and naive

It's better than a soccer mom telling somebody to sit down because they are being loud and boisterous.

I wouldn't mind "flag-waving yahoos". Maybe we can even convert some of them into real live soccer fans. Wouldn't that be nice. Quite frankly I wish games were a litlle more of a US pep rally.

It's elitists like you who look down their noses at the dirty unwashed masses that makes converting new fans more difficult.

    You forgot "cannibal"

I like Bill Reilly every bit as much as I like Al Franken, which is to say I think they both care more about themselves than any position they might hold.

Al Franken is a little ahead only because he was involved in the Stuart Smalley/Michael Jordan skit, which may have been the unintentionally funniest skit in the history of SNL.

Sgt, you bring up a great point and I hope and pray that you are right about this incident inciting Americans to attend matches. My worry is that this story will be another reason for non-footy fans to write off the beautiful game. A couple of my close friends who are non-footy fans basically used this incident to say to me, "See I told you so....what a stupid sport."

In repsonse, I compare it to the idea of government. Governments are overthrown in our world, and violently. It does not mean that government is bad or that we shouldn't have it in the US. I don't think that our government is in danger of being overthrown with violence (unless the Democrats are plotting something without telling me :) ) It has to do with the culture and attitude of some people in the country where these events are taking place. Just an example....
