Nico is actually going to tally up the votes here, (1st place, 10 points; 2nd place 9; etc.). So that current order is probably how that list will be tallied. Just FYI.

Born in Tacoma, WA. Check out her song "Thrice All American." Its her ode to this crappy town. Apparently Im wrong, as two people have pointed out that she was born in Virginia, but she considers Tacoma her "hometown." I think my liner notes implied that she was born in Tacoma, but Im sure that Ive seen somewhere else that she was born in Washington State. Oh well. And as for the Decemberists. Colin is from Missoula, I live with three kids from there and they like to remind me. Everyone else was living in Portland at the time they formed, cant say where they lived before that. Im working on my top ten. Probably gonna include Le Tigre, the Mae Shi, Numbers, DFA '79, the Shins, Modest Mouse, Fraz Ferdinand, Deerhoof and the Faint. Im in college, Im supposed to like this stuff. I like the YYYs, but Karen sucks live. I hated every minute of the shows Ive been to; she is always too drunk to have any clarity in her voice and is often reduced to inaudible screaming and writhing on stage.
I can't do "current," I'm WAY too friggin' old! And "top" lists are universally haunted by personal tastes. "Unbiased" is impossible. But that's part of the fun. That said, my "stuck in my brain today" top-ten US favorites: 1) The Replacements; 2) Bob Dylan; 3) Uncle Tupelo; 4) Steve Earle; 5) Guided by Voices; 6) R.E.M.; 7) Pixies; 8) Public Enemy; 9) The Mighty Mighty BossToneS; 10) Husker Du/Bob Mould/Sugar; 11) The Jayhawks. Mine goes to eleven.
I swear, she's from ol' Virginny! Her first records was, afterall, the Virginian. Went to school in Vancouver and joined some bands there and, when she either fiinished or quit school, she had to leave Canada and, I think, she took up residence in the Seattle area.
Okay, here's BigSoccer users top 40 American bands of 2004. In the event of a tie in points, I used the following tiebreakers: 1) amount of votes 2) highest vote number (if an act had the same amount of votes, but one had more #1 votes for instance) otherwise, I just left it as a tie. I'm just posting the Top 40 right now. The list of others receiving votes will follow shortly, and will not be in numerical order as this was a pain to do. Votes were cast for 119 different performers. Also, I'm not familiar with some of these people, so I'm not doing nationality verification since there seems to be questions about some of these. I just tallied the numbers, I didn't check to see if bands exist, etc. You all can debate that. Rank # is on the left, total points follow the band name. BIGSOCCER'S TOP 40 AMERICAN BANDS OF 2004 01.
