1.Pixies (who i saw in Milwaukee AND Chicago two weeks ago) 2.Drive-By Truckers 3.Afghan Whigs (if it HAS to be an immediately current band, then the twilight singers will do fine) 4.Wilco 5.Neko Case 6.Brian Wilson 7.Yeah Yeah Yeahs 8.Old 97's 9.The Waco Brothers 10.The Roots (never made a great album but awesome live)
1. Third Eye Blind 2. Linkin Park 3. Eminem 4. Beastie Boys 5. Blink 182 6. No Doubt 7. N.E.R.D. 8. Modest Mouse 9. Wyclef Jean 10. Green Day I know Wyclef Jean was born in Haiti, but he grew up in the US.
I've been rehashing this since Nico intro'd the thread. It was tough. Here we go in order: Arcade Fire (I'm counting this as American because the main singer/songwriter is a Texan, and so is another member, and a third had dual-citizenship) Interpol Beck Nina Nastastia Twilight Singers Stephen Merrit/Magnetic Fields John Vanderslice Killers The Shins Cursive
I did a top 10 list of artists/bands that released albums in 2003 or 2004. So, basically I didn't follow directions! I couldn't, though; I don't really download & I don't buy enough CDs to fully know what's going on. Anyway, here's the list: 1. Wilco (ghost is born is the best record I've heard since...I can't remember when) 2. My Morning Jacket 3. Ryan Adams (he's a douche, but he's good live & I loved Love is Hell) 4. Josh Rouse 5. Shins 6. Interpol 7. M. Ward (wouldn't know he existed, if he didn't open for MMJ - cheers to the Jacket) 8. Jay-Z 9. Drive By Truckers (for their live shows) 10. Lyle Lovett (like his early stuff better, but he gave a great free show in NYC on the 4th. Enough to make the list) Disappointment of 2004: Marah. Kids in Philly is brilliant, their new record is brutal. And I went to buy it on the day it came out! Most overrated: Neptunes & Yeah Yeah Yeah's (tie) I bought Neptunes last mix-tape on the strength of the Kelis/Nas duet & threw it out a few weeks later. Their stuff might as well come with an expiration date. And, while I love Maps, I can't explain to you how overhyped the YYY's are in the NYC press.
Great thread, lots of stuff in here to check out thanks to all your lists. Some might not have done much in 2004 but have in the past couple years: 1-Interpol 2-Strokes 3-Broken Social Scene (might be Canadian, not sure) 4-Jay-Z 5-Outkast 6-Wilco 7-Madvillian 8-Shins 9-Sufjan Stevens 10-Common Sense
See, that's not fair. I purposely EXcluded the Arcade Fire from my list because allmusic said they were all canadian. Oh well. I'll just leave it as it is. Don't wanna give Nico more math troubles.
yeah, but it's still much better than float away....and their live shows are still amongst the best i have ever seen.
Going out of town for a few days. There are, however, several days left in the polling. I will tabulate upon my return on Monday.
their lives shows are usually a lot of fun. although i saw dave open solo for neko case in brooklyn & he was practically laughed off the stage (not by me). so they can be hit and miss. but this record was still mad disappointing. i wrote off float away as an aberration because of the production and the whole sound makeover, but this record was basically kids in philly, the sequel, and it was really bad. i pegged them as one of the best bands in the US a few years ago & now i'm wondering if they only have one album in them.
True...I already had to pull one off my list, the Unicorns, when I did a check on them and sure enough they were also Canadians
Just FYI, if it matters: I didn't confine my list to only artists who produced something in 2004. Just bands that I know are currently active, a la Beck.
Ted told me to pass this list along. He's busy with his pet project. Don't ask. 1. The Old Shrimp Farm 2. The Bunny Spankers 3. Sacklunch with Jennifer 4. Normal Thickness 5. Mrs. Robinson's Tub 6. The Chislers 7. One Flat Monkey ( as in, "That's one flat monkey, sir!" ) 8. Elfwagon 9. This Rhino 10. Crayon Fiction
i didn't hate it as much as you, but it clearly isn't the quality of "kids in philly", or even "lets cut the crap..." I don't think they will reach that again to be honest.
--- oh, and Back in My Afterlife got an honorable mention as well. their second album ( Spoons on Parade ) is very acid-reflux/deep house.
Geez, if I'd shut up half of the top 40 American bands would be Canadian. Yeah Broken Social Scene is Canadian. I'm gonna claim Metric too even though they've lived in LA, London and NYC since leaving Mtl. Anyone want to do the top 40 Canadian bands? C'mon everyone loves a challenge. cheers, hobbes
