July '01 win for Mexico was against a US team that had lost all of its top 4 forwards and 4 of its top 6 midfielders to injury (Mexico A vs. USA B).

that would be a great point... if those were the only games they ever played - as it is, it's still a decent point, but mexico did recently beat brazil

of course that is not a true measure as they are all playing different teams - some groups are easier than others

overall i dont think these rankings are THAT ridiculous

 

The FIFA rankings are a joke, some Americans love rankings and assume the FIFA one´s are good. They are not. I love your idea Pigs and here is my take. Football´s primary aim is to get results, not to play nicely. So I just don´t understand why teams like Spain or Holland get rated so highly. Sure, they play some nice ball, but what did they achieve?

1) France - 20
(Solid defense and good young players put them over Brazil)

2) Brazil - 19
(Not as impressive as before, but WON the WC, made the best of a somewhat poor WC)

3) Argentina - 18
(WC Group of Death, unhappy to go out, GREAT players)

4) Italy - 17
(Great players as well, but the wrong coach, could be much of a force if playing a more attacking style)

5) Czech Republic -16
(results AND nice football)

6) England - 15
(not because I´m half English, but they have some good footballers and get the results. Newsflash: Compared to the likes of Spain and Holland they actually win most of their competitive matches)

7) Turkey - 14
(Hate to admit it, but they are good. If only it wasn´t for their supporters)

8) Germany - 13
(Somewhat down, but still get the results, lots of promising players, some still injured like Nowotny and Deisler)

9) Netherlands - 12
(Would probably have qualified directly in most of the other groups, but again, they haven´t, and that´s what counts. BAD team spirit)

10) Spain - 11
(Being second to Greece is NOT a good thing. Only Top Ten because they have good players)

11) Portugal - 10
(Aging team, behind Spain because of this. Always fail when it counts.)

12) Cameroon - 9
(WC was bad luck, the Irish were tough. Good, stylish team)

13) Ireland - 8
(Interesting team with a fighting spirit)

14) USA - 7
(I think they are a force to be reckoned in the years to come, but not in WC 06)

15) Columbia - 6
(Good results lately, but never achieved much at world stage)

16) Sweden - 5
(Solid EC qualifying)

17) Senegal - 4
(Have to show they are no one-hit wonder)

18) Mexico - 3
(Top 20 but barely, Gold Cup doesn´t count much to me)

19) South Korea - 2
(See Senegal)

20) Nigeria - 1
(I like African football)

Tough to be let out: Bulgaria, Wales, Greece and Switzerland - all of them had noteworthy results, but sometimes the style was not too promising (Greece), they had a rather easy group (Bulgaria) or slipped against lesser opponents (Wales).

well i could definitely quibble with your rankings as well - it's all subjective

oh and HOLLAND's loss at the czech republic (which is some sort of shameful result i suppose) was their first loss in 17 IIRC

and for the people ranking nigeria in the top 20... when was the last time that side didn't take a crap? they hadn't had a good result in eons
