Hey Ya'll. The first round went swimmingly from all accounts. No one got stiffed, and it seemed like everyone recieved some new music. So, for your pleasure: I bring you round two. Same rules apply:

1.) No current top twenty songs. The idea here is new/undiscovered music.
2.) Local bands are encouraged, but only if they are recorded professionally (I guess if you have some spectacular 4-track recordings this could be overlooked, but they would have to be exceptional)
3.) Limit of two or three tracks per band per CD. No full albums, and not half a cd of your favorite band or friends’ band. If someone wants more of a group they can buy it.
4.) If a member flakes out one month without posting a valid reason, their name is taken out of the hat.
5.) No genre specific mixes, please. Mix up the styles as best as possible.

Check your PM's for your partner and their address. The timeline for this round is from now until the end of the month. Please try to get your CD out by the end of July, as I will try to get the next pairings out byt the begining of August (although I may be on vacation that week so it may be early or late)

PM me if you arn't enrolled and want to be included for August.

Does anyone have an mp3 of "Hangin' Tough" by NKoTB??? I was hoping to put it on my mix, but my copy skips.

Oh... and can we put videos on the disc? My partner just has to see this Chilliwack video!!!

Okay, here's the tracklisting for the excellent, very eclectic mix I received from M9fanatic:

    1. On Fire - Sebadoh
    2. My Mistake - Smashing Pumpkins
    3. Call It Stormy Monday - Elmore James
    4. Candela - Chayanne
    5. Esta Noche - Panteon Rococo
    6. Firing Squad - Penetration
    7. Girl Anachronism - The Dresden Dolls
    8. Brand New Love - Sebadoh
    9. Eep Opp Ork Ah-Ah (Means I Love You) - Violent Femmes
    10. Penetration - Iggy & The Stooges
    11. Never Look Back - Ten Foot Pole
    12. I Believe - Elmore James
    13. Afuera - Caifanes
    14. I've Been Loving You Too Long - Otis Redding
    15. Klaatu Barada Nikto - Johnny Fubar
    16. Charge - Splendid
    17. High As You Can Be - Asylum Street Spankers
    18. I Bow Down and Pray to Every Woman - Chuck Prophet
    19. Thickfreakness - The Black Keys
    20. We Drink on the Job - Earlimart
    21. Monk.e.Dreams - Motomo
    22. All Hands on the Bad One - Sleater-Kinney

Lots of bands I've never heard of on this mix (e.g., Johnny Fubar) and lots of bands I've heard of but never listened to (e.g., Sleater-Kinney -- why haven't I checked them out before?). I have tons of Smashing Pumpkins, but have never heard "My Mistake."

Anyway, after one listen, these bands stand out: The Dresden Dolls, Sebadoh, Splendid, Asylum Street Spankers, Earlimart, Caifanes, and Sleater-Kinney. My favorite track is "Charge" by Splendid, but the Asylum Street Spankers song is a close second. Loved the Earlimart song, too. Most intriguing track - "Esta Noche," because I've never heard punk/ska with a Spanish twist. The Dresden Dolls track is also an ear-catcher. I guess you could call it a "punk by piano" song.

One more thing - The Stooges' "Raw Power" is one of my favorite all-time albums. But the CD version of the album that I have is a remix, so it's not as raw as the version of "Penetration" that M9 included in her mix. I like this raw version better than the "cleaned up" version on my CD.

I'm sure after more listens, other tracks will hit me with more impact. Good stuff, M9!

OK, after reading through the last thread, I'm sold. I can't say my collection goes quite as eclectic as a lot of the tracklists, but I've been known to put together some quality mixes in my day. Bishop, I'll PM you.

Check out this doozie Astorian sent me:

    The 1234 theSTART
Staring At The Sun Simple Kid
Vacuum Boots The Brian Jonestown Massacre
For Lovers Wolfman (Featuring Pete Doherty)
    I Am Rock Simple Kid
    Sunday Driver Actual Size
Fit But You Know It The Streets
    Hard Bloke Geezers Of Nazareth
    The Dog Eggstone
    The Bandit The Starlight Mints
    Comfortably Numb Scissor Sisters
Alternate Route To Vulcan Street Super Furry Animals
    Swan Lake Actual Size
Bicycling With The Devil Scissor Sisters
    Brass Digger The Starlight Mints
    Head Around Eggstone
Take Your Mama Out Scissor Sisters
    Van Tango Franz Ferdinand
When The Kingdom Comes Primal Scream
    This Purple Child Howe Gelb

Incredibly hip and up-to-the minute cool, Astorian hits me with 3 Scissor Sisters tracks (totally gay, totally fun). Starlight Mints? Always appropriate. I'm a big fan of theSTART, and always wondered why they couldn't be "No Doubt big". Great SFA track, great non-LP Franz F.

The two great discoveries here for me...First is the Wolfman track, which is so good I'll probably put it on my next disc for someone else. It's really really great. Libertines fans (that means you NancyB) take note. The other is Simple Kid, which my son has been telling me about, but I hadn't heard until now. I just made a call to get the album sent. Good stuff.

Of course, the mark of quality is the inclusion of a couple Eggstone tracks. And closing with a little Gelb is a nice touch. Made me fire up a Giant Sand CD last night.

    Nice work fella!

Great. I think I better send you five discs of stuff with the hope that you'll find a couple things you like.

I had always planned to put some tracks together that I thought people may have missed. My stuff is as new as I can get... and I hope you'll like some of it... but you seem to be into a lot of stuff...

Oh well... we'll see. I'm definitely not up-to-the-minute though.

At least I can assure you that I won't be sending top 20!

Maybe you should PM me and tell me what you hate! That way I can adjust the list I've made so far.

No way. This isn't a hipness contest. It's about making a disc full of stuff you want someone else to hear.

When I see some of the stuff in the "What Are You Listening To Now" thread, I see there's tons of music I'm not familiar with. And there's not a hell of a lot I hate. Let 'er rip.

On Tuesday, Clem down at the General Store finally got off his a$$ long enough to bring me my mail which happily included 655321's fine disc. This is only my third day of listening to the thing but this disc is exactly what I was hoping to get when I signed up for this mix-sharing shindig that we have going here. I didn't know a single artist on the disc and each tune was foreign to the sounds I've been listening to; completely out of my comfort zone.

    Tracks and Comments:

King Gedorah - "Fazers" Hip-hop over a sweeping organ loop and simple beat. The contrast between the MGM-movie-sounding organ and the rapping is my favorite part of this song.
Alton Ellis - "Lord Deliver Us" Soulful reggae tune. I'm generally not much of a reggae fan but I like this track. It has a nice little hook towards the end of the chorus when Ellis starts singing "...still can't help us...still can't help us". I wish the vocals were mixed a little higher since it sounds kind of washed out but it doesn't hurt the song.
Primal Scream - "Lord is My Shotgun" Indie rock blues number. I like bands like JSBX and Delta 72 but the high-pitched feedback in this song grates on me. If I'm ever going to like this song, it will be after a lot more than three days of listening to it. It is definitely a song that would have to grow on someone over time.
King Tubby - "Fittest of the Fittest Dub" Dub track with reggae beat and vocals. I like the piano and sax that dance in and out of the song. I have no idea what King Tubby is singing but that's OK because the rest is interesting to listen to.
OC - "Times Up" Hip hop. Great song. It has a sly little loop mixed down low running at about a quarter of the speed of OC's rap. The contrast works really well. Unfortunately, 655321 said in his liner notes that it was from a compilation. Is it also on an OC album anywhere?
Seefeel - "Polyfusion" Instrumental indie drone rock. This one sounds to me like something Yo La Tengo would play live that leaves the entire crowd rocking back and forth in a drone-like trance (which is good). Probably not something I'd pick up but interesting to have on the mix.
MF Doom - "Red and Gold" Hip hop. My favorite part, apparently also 655321's according to his liner notes, of this song is the vocal sample "...and the lights went down in a haaaaze". It's a cool little clip that you get teased with occasionally before getting the whole clip. I find myself singing that little clip walking around the house.
Clinic - "Porno" Indie rock. The singer sounds like the guy from Hefner and the band sounds like Home. I keep expecting the song to go somewhere it doesn't so I need to get used to it before I can figure out what I think of it.
Eric Dolphy - "South Street Exit" Live jazz tune. This is my favorite ditty on the disc. The sound is a little muddy but Dolphy's flute playing is amazing. I'm going to try to buy this album this weekend.
Lee Perry - "Lee Perry's Upsetting Dub" Instrumental dub track. Reminds me of the music from the King Tubby track earlier on the disc except with occasional different electronic sounds rather than the piano and sax.
Augustus Pablo - "Up Warrika Hill" Instrumental track featuring a Melodica. How many tunes do you get to hear that feature a melodica? Once again, a perfect example of why this mix swapping thing is so damn good.
The Coral - "God Knows" Indie rock. Nice mellow tune to finish out the disc. The lyrics have stuck in my head since they are simple and Beatlesque-catchy.

Overall, I really like listening to this disc. I'm definitely going to get the Eric Dolphy album and possibly the Alton Ellis disc. So, between those and the Ted Leo CD I picked up after seeing it on a few different mixes folks had made for others, that's three new discs to enjoy. Thanks to Mad Bishop for putting this together and to 655321 for his great mix.

The low mix is simply a result of it being recorded in the early sixties in Jamaica. But whether you like lo-fi and/or mono stuff or not, you simply will not find a better Jamaican soul album than this.

I'll agree fully on all accounts. It's a little frustrating though. It's hard enough to mix properly at a club, but it's nearly worse trying to rip old Jamaican vinyl to sound good on a CD. That's why I so appreciate what Heartbeat has been doing (and to a smaller extent Trojan.)

Obie may have to wait a week or two to get his disc, as I'm having trouble gaining focus on his mix. I'm torn because I'd like to get it out as soon as possible, and I know I can throw twenty songs together that I like, but they arn't flowing. Perhaps when I get a small stack of discs back from a buddy on Sun. then it will come together better, because as of right now it runs the gammut from 60's garage rock to 70's soul, to 90's noise/avant then with modern hip hop and breakbeat thrown in. Not easy to transition stuff.
