Not sure if anything like this has been done or proposed, ut it's just a thought. A group of guys here in my city (mostly musicians, but not all) have gotten together and started a "Mixed-CD" club. Essentially, what we do is every month, we draw a name ALA Secret Santa, and make a mixed CD for said person., with the idea being that the CD will perhaps introduce others to new and/or undiscovered music.

I’m not sure if there is actual interest, but I thought with all the different and eclectic tastes in music that people on here have displayed, that this would be a good venture to bring to this board.

I’m very interested in this. I only have a few requirements, and people should feel free to post other potential stipulations if they can think of it.

1.) No current top twenty songs. The idea here is new/undiscovered music.
2.) Local bands are encouraged, but only if they are recorded professionally (I guess if you have some spectacular 4-track recordings this could be overlooked, but they would have to be exceptional)
3.) Limit of two or three tracks per band per CD. No full albums, and not half a cd of your favorite band or friends’ band. If someone wants more of a group they can buy it.
4.) If a member flakes out one month without posting a valid reason, their name is taken out of the hat.

If you are interested, PM me or post here. I will start putting together a list and a possible timeline for this to start

We've done something similar before...we had a circle of people who started a tape with a song, and everyone sent their tape to the next guy on the list who added one and sent it on. Worked well for about a dozen songs before they started mysteriously vanishing. I picked up a few new favorite bands from that project, particularly from the library of Meridian FC.

    Count me in.

Well, I sort of am in the been burned twice camp, but, like Footix said, it's a great way to hear new stuff. Count me in. I need excuses to go buy more music!

    Well, not really...

I thought you actually ended up with your last tape...

Neither one of mine made their way back to me

    Yeah sure, why not?

    One rule: no Nashville country.

    Re: Bigsoccer mixed-tape club

Originally I had thought about one person per month making one cd for everyone in the club, but the chance for people getting the screw there is huge. At least this way, the chance to be shafted is minimal, and we can account for it.

I'll go with Obie on the "nashville" country, but I think we should make exceptions for new bluegrass, indie country singer/songwriter, etc.

Oh yeah, proper labeling of songs and artist is a must, and descriptions, custom covers etc., should be encouraged.

You're right, I did. And, I still listen to it. I stand corrected!

How about, if instead of one song at a pop, everyone does 3 or 4. That way, the tape may fill up on one round and thus, may increase the chances you get it back.

I'm interested, but have one caveat -- I don't have a CD burner. That, however, will probably change sometime over the course of the summer.

Can't this be done somehow by posting the tracklistings and downloading the songs rather than actually mailing stuff to people?

I'm guessing that not all of the songs may be in downloadable form, especially if we're talking about local artists.

It probably could, but I don't think that's the point. It's a whole lot more fun to rip open an envelope and pop a tape or cd into a player to enjoy than to do the whole search/download/convert/burn whatever thing.

It's the same reason a fanzine is more fun to read than a webpage.

I belong to a club here in SF that does this every three or four months. We make one for each member, but I agree the easiest thing here is to draw a name and send to just one person.

As far as the "no country" request goes, maybe it would be easier (and more fair) to just say "no genre specific mixes"?? I like hip-hop more than nashville stuff, but I'd rather hear one really good country song I didn't know than get a full CD of old rap I already knew about.

I think that's a good idea. One of the reasons I'd like to do this is that I'm open to most any type of music, and I'd like to learn more about the musical genres that I don't know much about, such as country.

    Re: Bigsoccer mixed-tape club

Drawing a name and sending it to one person is a good idea, but it's so hard to do a whole tape at once. I really liked the previous round we did as I listened to the tape a few times and then tried to find something that would go with the other things on the tape. That is, I got inspiration from others instead of just myself.

How's this for an idea - everyone who's in comes up with a "theme" or something. Then, everyone makes their own tape that combines the various themes, makes copies for everyone else and sends it out to the group. Each tape would combine all the themes. We still have the chance that someone doesn't pony up, but seems like it could possibly limit the amazing disappearing tape problem.

    Re: Bigsoccer mixed-tape club

As to YankFC's problem with the lack of CD burner, I see no reason why those without CD burners can't do tapes, instead, but I think most people find it easier and less time consuming to burn CD's. Plus it's more convienent for the listener. Some people, including myself, no longer have analog equiptment. I literally have no cassette player in my home, nor in any of my three cars.

As far as the "add-a-track" idea, I just fail to see the payoff. I think the best part of a monthly trade is that people are always getting music, as oppossed to waiting forever for the thing to make it's way back to them.

I'll also concede that the genre-specific rule is more fair than a blanket rule.

Also, I concur with Footix that while dl'ing is an option (w\one could set-up an FTP, etc.) it's a pain, and it's more fun to get mail. Plus, I'd rather spend $1.50 in postage than the time to find someone's mix online...

    Re: Bigsoccer mixed-tape club

I'm totally down for this. I was going to PM a bunch of people I thought might be interested, but I'm glad to see the idea go public.

I also don't see the need for restriction of genres. I listen to anything and everything. I own rap, metal, opera, bluegrass, world music, indie rock, classic rock, folk, pop, pretty much everything under the sun.

I would be so into this, then I just realized I have neither a CD burner nor a cassette player.....

ha! What a great idea, might give me a reason to go into my obscure but still amazing collection of CDs I haven't played in a while.

Whatever gets decided make sure to PM me. I'm so down for this.

    Re: Bigsoccer mixed-tape club

My problem with burning cds is I still have tons of stuff on vinyl that I haven't got on cd. However, since I no longer have a casset in the car, I may use this as a push to pick up some cd versions of things I have on vinyl.

I don't mind doing it. It's not like its a lot of work to collect a few addresses, pair people up and shoot out a few PMs. What are we talking about doing this about once a month? one time? twice a year?

I'd be interested as long as I can use Nico's burner and maybe his skill set. :)
