Since i am a BS member i was waiting for someone to open such a thread. Then i decided to open this thread by myself. But i had no idead what could be the topic of my first post until i discovered the re-releases of one of the greatest German Thrash metal bands of all-times: LIVING DEATH. -LIVING DEATH This Western German based Speed/Thrash metal band published 3 (or 4 ?) albums in the 1980s. Back then they were called the German Slayer (or Metallica or Dark Angel or...). Living Death were one of the first, if not the first German world class Thrash metal bands, but never became as popular as the mentioned American bands and were more or less forgotten in the 90s. But now, their 2 best albums "Vengeance of Hell" and "Metal Revolution" are re-released on CD. Instrumental they are a great band and their singer, Toto, has a very unique style. The albums can be ordered on Amazon Germany (www.amazon.de). I will do it. -EXORCIST Does anybody know where i can get the CD-release of their album "Nightmare Theatre" ?
I was tempted to post when I saw the title of this thread, but thrash metal just doesn't do it for me.
So, (he says, hijacking the thread), what qualifies as 'metal'? Slayer, Metallica, Sabbath, Ozzy, Motorhead, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, et al, clearly yes. What about bands that sing songs about chicks instead of doom-and-gloom stuff? Motley Crue, Scorpions, AC/DC, Van Halen? How about those abominable hair bands of the 80s? Warrant, Poison, Cinderella, Winger? How about techno-industrial bands, like Ministry, Nine Inch Nails or Rammstein? Does Kiss qualify? Alice Cooper? How about grungers like Alice In Chains?
I think if you're going to have a metal thread, it should probably include all types of metal: thrash, industrial, party, hair, cock and (sigh) probably even "nu" metal. BTW, please be careful with your use of the term "abominable" - I saw three of those bands on the same bill this summer. Twice!
Helloween is cool. I saw them back in Brazil with Iron Maiden, Biohazard, Motorhead, (shudder)Skid Row and a bunch of other bands I don't remember now. Lately, I've been rediscovering the 1st 4 Metallica albums and Sepultura's last two with Max. Any newer metal bands that don't try to be hip hop that I should listen to?
I still hope for an Iron Maiden show in a small club in Braunschweig, Germany. It will get boring to play in front of 200k people in Rio. Darkane. This Swedish band plays a mixture of old-school Speed/Trash, Industrial-Trash a la Fear Factory and Swedish Gothenburg Death Metal. I would recommend to start with their first album "Rusted Angel".
Hey Slipknotter, if you're looking for classic, relatively melodic metal, there's a band out of Switzerland called Crystal Ball (I know, the name is lame) who are damn good. I saw them a few months ago here in Vienna when they opened for Dokken. Then I met the band afterwards and they were really nice guys (also met Dokken - talked quite a bit with "Wild Mick", who is a good dude, as well as the current bassist Barry Sparks). Go to their homepage www.crystal-ball.ch, then go to the "Sound" section and check out "Queen of the Night" off of the In The Beginning record. There's also a handful of songs available on KaZaA. They're definitely worth checking out - the have kind of a Helloween-y sound, except more commercial (in the 1989 sense of commercial). Alex, they'll be touring Germany with Doro and the Udo in the next two months, but it looks like the closest they'll be to Braunschweig is Fulda.
I feel a bit guilty now, but i only listened to "Walls of Jericho". Would have been a great opportunity to reach my goal : at least 100 posts in this thread.
This wouldn't be a problem, i travel to concerts around Germany, but i already used my whole "concert budget" for the next weeks.
Soilwork, In Flames, and Nevermore are my 3 favorite metal bands at the moment. Soilwork and In Flames last albums were freakin amazing. My favorite types of metal are bands who scream the verses and sing the choruses in the same song. Bands like Soilwork and Fear Factory do that really well. I'm not a fan of death metal because I don't like the growling and there's no melody. I like the bands who are very melodic and can sing though I like the screaming too. Nu Metal I don't consider to be real metal. Anything that gets played on radio or mtv thats supposed to be metal like Disturbed or Korn I just refer to it as hard rock. True heavy metal is not "popular" never will be.
Converge are the most intense metal band today. The Dillinger Escape Plan are, by far, the most creative.
In two weeks i will be on a concert in Hamburg. The bill should interest you: In Flames, Soilwork and Pain. I hope that the show will be as good as the albums.
There's been plenty of metal that's been popular, just not pop. And the Black Album even blurred that line. And Disturbed kicks ass, I don't consider them nu metal at all. My fave metal band still putting out stuff right now has to be Black Label Society. Bump
To paraphrase a rock critic from long ago: "There's heavy metal, then there's the Heat Death of the the Universe, and finally, there's Motorhead."
I kind of prefer them to Maiden to tell you the truth. Bruce's voice kind of irritates me with all that warbling. Plus I can't stand the way all Maiden records are mixed - all bass and nothing else. Dave Murray's guitar-playing just sounds so... thin. Maiden of course has better lyrics, but Helloween has a better sense of humor. I'd describe Helloween as the way Maiden ought to be.
Ok, as i said above, i don't know much about Helloween. But of course Maiden are better The real reason for my post: Did you leave Austria ? Aren't you a Rapid supporter anymore ? Alex "IM BS" K.
Re: Re: BigSoccer Metal Thread I am still waiting for some fans of the good old 80's Thrash Metal. Damn, sometimes i wish that i would have been born 10 years earlier. So many great band i never saw live... I saw them once live (as opener for Ozzy) and live they are fun, but i always thought that their (or his his ) albums lack something, but i don't know exactly what. But Zakk always plays some nice soli (or is it solos in English ?).
I know i am a bit late, but i would say most of the bands you mentioned are Hard Rock (or crap, see: Rammstein ). Again i have another reason for a post: My favorite Sabbath album (that's the relation to whirlwind's post) is Headless Cross. I think it's much better than the Ozzy-albums. Am i insane ? Or is there somebody else with the same opinion (or at least someone who knows Headless Cross ?)
No, I’m still here (in Austria) and my favorite team is still SK Rapid. But I changed my profile a few days ago to support the New England Revolution (my “hometown” team) on their run to MLS Cup 2002. By the way, I’ve been wanting to congratulate you on your fine performance in the Kicker fantasy league!
Thank you . If i remember correctly you aren't that bad either. (And again a new post for "my" thread . Now i should give it some Metal content... ... SSSSSSSSSSSSLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRR ! )
