We are here Gopher! Just basking in the glory of winning the 2015 NCAA Tournament Prediction Contest. Big win for the BigBlue last night. I saw some guy in another thread bashing the Big10 already. Must be a Pitt fan. Well let them go ahead bash and trash, as we saw what happened last season. Much like last season thou, the Biggy10 has some good, some average, some bad and some really bad teams. I look forward to presenting my annual Biggyten prediction spread, coming soon to this thread. Have a great week.
2016 Nostradamus says. ".... It’s great to be back on the board, ready to analyze more meaningless and worthless statistics. Fresh from picking two big ten teams to make the final four last season, I’m reading to take the plunge into the murky waters and ever changing bows of the biggy10 2016 women’s soccer season. As is normal, I challenge the average big ten conference to rise above this mediocracy to defeat the same likely foes in the 2016 NCAA tournament. Let us see who we think these may be… 1 Penn State – you just can’t go against a great coach and a reoccurring recruiting machine (much like Dorrance at NC and Geno at UCONN). Yep missing players might have an impact, but probably not. 2 Minnesota – looking good with early results. Good young coach in Golan will make this bunch a contender. 3 Rutgers – still don’t know anything about them. But since I was wrong predicting them early on last season, I’ve learned my lesson. 4 Missagain – I mean Michigan, go big blue. Was the first game stumble against Pissburgh was an abnormality or signs of major weaknesses. 5 The Ohio State – what’s with the The in Ohio State. Same old ass of a coach, but with better talent to let play. A couple of nice non-conference wins, but nobody cares as long as they win in football. 6 Northwestern – still a pretender to me. If Cleveland hadn’t taken the name, Northwestern would have earned the nickname “the mistake on the lake” in college soccer. If they can manage to undo their four game losing streaks to Indiana and manage to have a winning season in the biggy10, I will agree to remove this tag. 7 Wisconsin – Coach, let the music play is all we have to say to you. Hey time to up their game against two really strong programs in South Dakota State and Loyola, I mean Ohio State and Penn State. The season outcome could be determined early. 8 Nebraska – eat more chickin’ the cornshuckers say. What used to be a really beefy program has their work cut out to improve upon last season 4-5-2 conference record. 9 Illinois – don’t expect much improvement over last season, but you never know when you have a top notch coach. 10 Iowa - non conference games has seen a lot of scoring from this new bunch and without injuries. They should improve upon a 1-9-1 conference schedule, which when you look at it, will put them in the 8-12 spots in the biggy10. 11-14th Michigan State, Maryland, Indiana and Purdue – well it looks like our bottom four cellar dwellers have returned yet for a third year in a row. Michigan State at the helm of 26 year veteran coach Saxton boasts winning seasons in 6 of the last eight years. Yet one might start to wiggle a bit with ties to Samford and Niagara and a loss to Central Michigan already in the 2016 book and four straight losing seasons in the Biggy10 conference. Indiana, what can you say, they don’t play Michigan State this year, so that’s one less chance for a conference win. After four years with no returns since Micks players left town, that seat has to be getting slightly warm. But probably not in a sports town that basketball rules, those others don’t really matter. And da Boilerups, coming off their first winning season since 2009 under Rolf, but don’t see them improving much. With a 2-4 record and a game to go before the biggy10 season, that one season winning streak looks like it might come to end. Of course they do play Michigan State, IU, Iowa and Illinois. There you have it my biggy10 friends, let the games begin and hopefully end soon. Yours Truly, Nostradamus, yrrebffum
Minnesota competed really well at Duke (0-1 loss), could have been a different outcome if the Devils GK didn't make a great save on an early scoring chance. Anson Dorrance tracked down Coach Golan (a Duke alumnus) after the game to tell her how well he thought the Gophers played. Rashida Beal is constantly overlooked since she only shows up in the box score as minutes played, but her positioning and speed at center back are going to make the Gophers really tough to score on all fall...2 goals against in 6 games played. Next three up are @ Stanford, @ Santa Clara and home vs Penn State, so it's put up or shut up time.
Lots of top tier games in the Big Ten opening weekend. Ohio State and Penn State were on the Minnesota/Wisconsin trip. On Friday, Minnesota and Penn State tied 1-1 and the Buckeyes and Badgers tied 2-2. Minnesota beat Ohio State 3-0 today while Penn State edged Wisconsin 1-0. Wisconsin is having a hell of a time trying to find the back of the net this season. Ohio State came in with a pretty lofty ranking but Minnesota handled them really well today. Should have scored a few more but missed an open goal once and missed a PK. Sunday games can be weird, especially when both teams played double OT on Friday. Simone Kolander already has 9 goals on the season. Minnesota vs. Penn State on Friday was a great match. Lots of beautiful, possession soccer, I like that many teams in the conference is getting more and more away from the direct style of yesteryear. Michigan beat Nebraska today to move to 2-0-0 in the conference. Northwestern is still undefeated and hasn't even been scored on in September. They haven't faced many stiff tests yet but are taking care of business and will be among the contenders. Rutgers beat Maryland in their only game this weekend. After the first weekend (way too early) I'd label Penn State, Minnesota, Michigan, Northwestern and Rutgers as the main contenders for the B1G title. Ohio State, Wisconsin and Nebraska could get back into the mix with their talent levels. I'm already writing off Michigan State, Purdue, IU, Illinois, Iowa and Maryland after week 1.
Two big results tonight: Nebraska 3 Ohio State 0. I thought OSU looked out of sorts on defense all day last Sunday against the Gophers, and Jaycie Johnson must have seen the same thing, netting the hat trick. Ohio State has given up 11 goals in their last 4 games, need to shore up that D if they expect to be a tourney team. Rutgers 2 Northwestern 0. Wildcats aren't unbeaten anymore, and they gave up their first two goals of the month. Are the Scarlet Knights the real deal, or was Northwestern just a benefactor of a soft schedule? Probably a bit of both. Other Friday results were all about as expected: Minnesota 3 Indiana 0 Wisconsin 3 Purdue 1 Maryland 3 Illinois 1 Penn State 2 Iowa 0 Michigan and MSU play each other tomorrow evening.
Big ten scores: Yikes, Indiana 3 Wisconsin and the non band playing coach 2. Illinois 0 Rutgers 0. When Indiana beats Wisconsin, you know the big ten is down. With the seat getting a little warm in Bloomingdales, mayby a .500 big ten season would be progress. Nah, two big ten win seems to be enough. And coach rayfield's team clamps down on the Knights. Who would have thunk that who happen. Ohio state a big disappointment thus far. Bwhaaaaa. Northwestern, contenders or pretenders. Probably the latter. Again, the biggyten is shaping up a boring and mediocre soccer conference this season. But just like last season, mediocre may be enough to win it all.
Minnesota beat Purdue 2-0 to finish up the Indiana road weekend shutout sweep. Wasn't the best play I've seen from them all year, but taking care of business none the less. Today's goals: Stiever: http://www.snappytv.com/tc/2876974 Bockin: http://www.snappytv.com/tc/2877078
Other results: Ohio State 3 Iowa 0 Rutgers 0 Illinois 0 Indiana 3 Wisco 2 Michigan 1 Michigan State 0 Penn State 2 Nebraska 1 Standings after week 2: Minnesota 3-0-1 Penn State 3-0-1 Michigan 3-0-0 Northwestern 3-1-0 Rutgers 2-0-1 Nebraska 2-2-0 Indiana 2-2-0 Ohio State 1-2-1 Wisconsin 1-2-1 Michigan State 1-2-0 Maryland 1-2-0 Purdue 1-3-0 Illinois 0-3-1 Iowa 0-4-0
Big Ten teams seem to want Penn State on top. Just when the Nittany Lions have a draw, other contending teams lose or also draw. Penn State is again on top by one point over Minnesota and Northwestern with 2 matches remaining. The schedule favors PSU if they win out.
Yeah, funny how things worked out that way. To be fair, Wisconsin it tied for first with Penn State, but they do an easier schedule to finish. I don't think the B1G is very good this year, unfortunately. I can't see any of the B1G teams going far in the national championship tourney this year. Complete B1G Conference Standings (as of today): 1. Penn State 8-2-1 1. Wisconsin 8-2-1 3. Rutgers 7-2-2 4. Northwestern 7-3-1 5. Michigan 6-3-2 6. Minnesota 6-4-1 7. Ohio State 5-4-2 8. Illinois 4-4-3 9. Michigan St 4-5-2 9. Nebraska 4-5-2 11. Purdue 4-6-1 12. Indiana 0-7-4 12. Iowa 1-9-1 12. Maryland 1-9-1
Think you may have found the end 2015 big ten standings. I made that mistake the first time I looked.
My bad, I searched Google for the BigTen Conference standings, and opened the first link. But I must have jotted down the wrong years data without paying attention. Thanks for the heads up @dmthomas49. Here's the 2016 (REAL) conference standings: 1. Penn State 6-0-3 2. Northwestern 6-1-2 2. Minnesota 6-1-2 4. Michigan 5-2-2 5. Rutgers 4-1-4 6. Wisconsin 4-2-3 7. Nebraska 4-3-2 7. Indiana 4-3-2 9. Ohio State 3-3-3 10. Illinois 3-5-1 11. Michigan State 2-7-0 11. Purdue 2-7-0 13. Iowa 1-8-0 13. Maryland 1-8-0
Here's how my simulation is projecting final BigTen regular season standings: PennState 27 MinnesotaU 24 NorthwesternU 24 Rutgers 20 NebraskaU 18 WisconsinU 18 IndianaU 18 MichiganU 17 OhioState 14 IllinoisU 10 MichiganState 9 IowaU 6 Purdue 6 MarylandU 3
Penn State losing to Michigan State 2-0 in 80 something minute. Not doing what they need to win the Big 10 title.
Oh brother, a let down, for sure. Anyway, I didn't expect them to get very far this year. They lost too much talent to graduation and the U-20 WWC. 2017 Next year, they will be at full force (getting back the 5 U-20 players, who've taken a redshirt year off). In addition to the 2 international freshmen they added this year (Fisk and Freigang). And next year they will be getting 2 more really good freshmen (Tagliaferri from U-17's and Moyer from U-18's). PSU will only lose one senior starter next year (N. Driesse), so I'd say 2017 looks primed for another run.
The season that nobody wants to win continues...Northwestern ties Minnesota to create a 3 way tie at the top of the league. OSU ahead of Michigan 2-1 in the second half. If that result stands, it will be a 3 way fight for the top spot between NW, Minn and PSU.
