i ran across this just now at the ussocceruk.com message boards. possibly an obvious april fool's joke to the posters over there, or something more...

"You're gonna kill me, but the biggest story in long long long time is about to leak out in the not too distant future. You aren't going to believe what is going on.

It will even move past just the sports news, me thinks."

    - chrisbergin Posted: 31 Mar 2003 17:04

and this was his reply to a guess proposed by someone...

    "Major player move?

    Warm."

    - chrisbergin Posted: 31 Mar 2003 18:02

anybody know what chris is talking about?

If it is to make news on pages other than the sports, I'd think it would be the signing of a certain 13-year old.... or David Beckham!

He's now saying that it's a major negative issue with a certain club...I'm assuming some player is in deep hot water at the moment.

I think it's an April Fools Joke. I will be surprised if this rumor comes to fruition.

FWIW, Bergin specifically said it's no april fool's joke. I guess we'll see.

If it doesn't have to do with MLS, it could be the deal with Liverpool and under the table money.

I don't know. I heard Beckham and Sir Alex are extremely pissed at each other right now (Fergie threw a cleat at him in frustration), and I've seen rumors that Beckham might go to Arsenal or some other team. Whether that's enough to make news outside the sports page... definitely not. But it is noteworthy, I think.

Maybe a player like, Hristo Stoichkov?

I think there is going to be huge problems resulting from his tackle.

First, I think he gets his contract with MLS terminated. It would be bad enough if he was a player, but he is a coach as well. Fine example he sets for young, impressionable minds like Convey and Tino.

Second, I think AU or the player will file some kind of civil lawsuit claiming reckless endangerment against Stoichkov, DC, and possibly AEG and MLS.

This would be more than just on the sports pages, without a doubt.

I don't see a lawsuit by the AU soccer player getting into Section A of my paper.

To me, the most likely thing is a player being accused of a serious, serious crime...murder or drug trafficking. Even rape (sadly) wouldn't be that big. It's dreadfully common.

The other thing would be Anschutz being in deep trouble.

Chris said that he will post something tonight and that he will try to break the story tomorrow. Here's a quote, "One MLS club is going to have a serious problem, or I should say has a major problem."

    Yikes.

Corky Bergin is a tool. Plain and simple. Grimandi walking out is a "major problem"? Puh-lease. It might be an issue, but is it the end of the world like he made it seem on his site?

And besides this so-called "big news", just look at his headline today: "MLS set to announce two new teams". Set to announce? In what fantasy world? Sure he gets stuff right, but only because he talks to agents and MLS PR people. He's a self-promoting tool. No more, no less.

I sense that you are angry. What do you mean in what fantasy world? MLS is ready to announce expansion if you have read anything recently.

Chris is reporting that Gilles Grimandia is leaving MLS due to opposition to the war, and also the anti-French feeling in the US. I'm gonna guess this is it, because he said it might carry past the sports pages.

It's a helluva scoop, on the one hand, but on the other, it doesn't really match the breathless prose with which he announced something was up.

reading this actually made me grumpy. having seen grimandi play, i was really looking forward to watching him this season. when i read this on BS, i dismissed thinking it was an apirl fools joke. then i read it in US soccer, citing "personal reasons," i didn't know what to think.

this much can be said though. it doesn't follow suit with all the other extremely vague reports that Chris usually makes. and until i see the report posted on Planetfootball -- i'm going to put this off as a farce. middle finger to you chris for making me grumpy. ;)

i'm still thinking this is an april fools joke gone. there have been no quote or information to say what bergin's reporting is true. i looked at grimadi's www.icons.com diary entry dated March 24 and this is what he says about the war and how he's being treated:

came from this diary entry http://www.icons.com/grimandi/diary.html you have to sign up to read it.

I think people have to realize that what is considered a pretty big deal by people in the UK might not seem so big to Americans and vice versa. It's sort of a cultural thing. Having a player walk out on his club in order to make a political statement doesn't fly too well in the UK (and other parts of Europe). It might not be too big a deal in the US since we're used to it on a certain level. Please keep things in perspective and try to look at things as they come.

I really hope this is not true. I was hoping to see Grimandi play. It certainly doesn't do much for American (at least in MLS cricles) opinions of the French. He should look at this as a way to show us Americans that the French don't get up and run in the face of adversity. Oh wait... :)

You won't believe it, but the news made the front page of my local paper, the North Jersey Herald News! Here it says, "Frogman Grimandi walks out on USA"!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Corky for the scoop!

Oh wait. It actually says "Corky Bergin's ego grows so huge it bursts". Sorry for missreading it.

Oh wait. It actually says nothing about soccer or Corky. My bad.

Yeah, I've got to think it had to do with a silly Frog welching on his contract in Colorado.

What is this? I've been all over the UK websites and Liverpool's page and haven't seen any mention of anything remotely similar?
