Coach is selected. Seems like a person to be optimistic about. https://theathletic.com/2332395/2021/01/19/
Pablo asked all the right questions and Losada gave all the right answers. He's either great at BS'ing or really knows and understands all the challenges that a coach will face in this league. Haven't had much to be excited about around here but this feels like something worth getting up for.
He showed that he did his research, knows the youth, watched the play. If I'm a youth player I'm encouraged that I have a place and a role.
Nice to see he finally wrote another DCU story after I let my subscription go. Lets see if he writes another? Doesn't matter, I spent my Athletic subscription money on CBS for UCL coverage. I feel like I have been saying this all along.
My favorite Hernan quote from this article: I see pressure as a privilege. And I agree with one of the article comments that this slogan needs to get plastered everywhere for all to see.
That could make for a great new club motto for DCU, in Latin, of course: Pressura Privilegium Est It might have been a bit more intimidating if we had adopted this in, say, 1999 when we had all of MLS by the scrotum. Oh well, never too late. Are there any classics pukes out there who could suggest another, shorter word for "privilegium"?
Goff had a long Zoom call with Losada. He plans to keep Ashton and Thornton and add another assistant of his own choosing..
Yeah, there have been so many painful games over the last few years, where the strategy seemed to be to try and play for a draw at home. And I’d rather lose 5-4 than 1-0.
I think it will be crystal clear who is in charge and calling the shots and making tactics and formations. It may pay off as a smart move to join the team with the help of someone who knows all the players and the league. This will also keep those players who wanted Ashton to stay happy and kind of keep the vibe going from the end of last year while still getting our new coach. I kind of like it.
Thornton is a fine GK coach, so keeping him is a no-brainer. Ashton showed a desire to try to play positively when Olsen was let go. He's under contract for only the next year and probably can help Losada in offering a more nuanced evaluation of the current roster. This coming season will be a work in progress, so it's probably better than Losada bringing in a completely new, Euro-based set of assistants.
Now it’s even more clear where the Pineda and Armas deals broke down Respect to those guys for standing their ground. In the end I’m not mad because it shows Losada is pragmatic and willing to compromise a bit, but REALLY wanted the job even without full control of his staffing picks Worthy of respect too imho
That's what I thought as well. The FO was unwilling to let a full staff come. Had to see out the deals of Ashton, et. al.
If we get rid of Ashton we cannot afford the nice bush in front of the lollipop store we are putting in.
I'm not mad because despite what I have said I am going to support Losada. I would not have supported Armas or Pineda.
I suspect after Thorton and Ashton's contract run out Losada will be allowed to fill the spots with whoever he wants. Given his lack of familiarity with MLS and DCU, it probably makes sense for Losada to keep them for a year and make a decision after the first season. It should help the transition and also provides Thorton and Ashton time to find a new gig.
Losada needs someone familiar with the roster at the beginning of his tenure here. He will be totally acquainted with the roster by the time Ashton's contract is up. (I think that is about the time Benny's is up also.)
I don’t agree Coaches take over teams all the time (replacing the previous admin completely). This guy is capable of handling the personnel on his own Likewise, DCU players should have been prepared to adapt to a totally new regime from the moment Olsen was shown the door...
I initially thought to do that but it seemed pretty obvious and pedestrian. I can change it if people want.
