Do you mean "finals" as a whole tournament or "final" as in the championship match where the winner lifted the Cup?

Brazil v Italy in WC 1970 was one sided. I think if you are talking about a competitive final match then Germany v Hungary in 1954, England v Germany in 1966, Argentina v Holland in 1978 and Argentina v Germany in 1986 were more competitive. However, the quality of football shown by Brazil in 1970 WC final is beyond comparison.

I agree. And from a tactical standpoint, a great chess match between Bilardo and Beckembauer.

  7. thought the kaiser came into the scene in 1990(i.e. as a n/t coach)......must have been someone esle in '86........

  8. my bad the kaiser was actually there on the losing side in '86............

    I think 1990.

Ok........ wasn't a classic final....... BUT

It kind of signalled the games entry in to the Modern Era. What with the great stadiums, superstar players and Money that splashed around during and after.

There is a book out called The Games That Rate that considers this game the greatest men's World Cup Final ever.

A few unique things about this game:

It is the only final in which a team came from behind two goals in the second half to force a tie.

It is the only final with both a tying and winning goal in the last ten minutes.

Maradona guaranteed victory before the game by saying he'd pass the ball to his teammates, they'd score and Argentina would win.

The winning goal came just as Maradona guaranteed. Who can forget the suspense as Burruchaga dribbled into the German penalty area, everyone wondering if he'd waited too long to shoot, before he slid the ball past the best keeper in the world to win the Cup?

It made Argentina only the third country to win two Cups in three tournaments, sealing its place in the Elite Four of soccer (Brazil, Germany, Italy and Argentina - there has NEVER been a final without at least one of these countries).

And, Argentina's win probably sealed the legendary status of Maradona.

    U. S. makes it to the quarters, Roberto Carlos gets done with a rainbow in the semi, Ronaldo has the type of tournament he had scoring goals, and he puts in the final two of the tournament. Probably not to most people, but 02' was awesome.

Argentina vs West Germany in 1986 and West Germany vs Hungary in '54. Great finals. Personally the second half of the 82 final was very good.
