Who do folks rate as the best striker currently in the Prem?

I go for Torres as he has pace, a powerful shot, dribbling skill, strength on the ball and in the air and the ability to score with either foot or his head. He is the most lethal striker in England and his goal stats back this up. He also has an excellent work-rate and attitude.

Do you agree or do you instead rate someone else? Other notable candidates are Drogba, Anelka, Rooney, Berbatov, Tevez, Yakubu, Van Persie, Adebayor, Agbonlahor and Santa Cruz.

I should mention that C Ronaldo, Gerrard and Robinho are prolific attackers but not strikers and so should not be included in this discussion.

For me personally it's a close call between Drogba and Torres.

When Drogba is in the mood he's simply unstoppable. Quick, strong, aggressive, a decent finisher, his stengths don't lie simply with his ability to score goals but his ability to play up on his own, and create time and space for players like Lampard and Ballack. I don't think there's a stronger, mopre aggressive striker in the world. He's not sort on skill either. If he stopped whinging so much and perhaps cut out the histrionics from his game it would make him more likeable to boot. As it stands, not many people are fans - even Chelsea fans.

For Torres, he's more intelligent. Clever movement off the ball, a deadly eye for goal and frightening pace. He's not as strong as Drogba physcially but he's a better finisher and his style of play is to try and avoid getting drawn into physical battles, instead preferring to deceive defenders with clever movement and last minute runs onto the end of balls.

Honourable mentions must go to Adebayor and Rooney. If Adebayor sorted himself out and started to work a little harder he could be as good as Drogba - alas, he seemed distant and unmotivated this season just gone. With Rooney, he needs to make a position his own first. He prefers playing down the middle, yet hen gets played out wide more often than not, blunting his goal threat. If he gets a central birth consistantly this season I think he can be as good as anyone, I really do, but he needs to play centrally more often otherwise we may as well class him along with Gerrard and Ronaldo as withdrawn attackers, rather than a specialist striker.

I don't think Anelka has shown enough on a consistant basis ditto for Yakubu, Berbatov, Tevez, van Persie and Santa Cruz.

Rooney is never a striker. His football brain, vision, and brilliant technique is totally wasted if you just stick him up front and expect him to score and spearhead an attack. BUT, I'm sure I don't need to tell you that anyway.....

It's between Drogba and Torres isn't it? I can't choose. Totally different players but equally effective. I'd back Torres to score more goals next season but Drogba (if still at Chelsea) will be absolutely crucial to their success (or otherwise)...

Realistically there are no other contenders right now unless you count Ronaldo but I'd refer you to what I previously said about Rooney (swapping 'football brain, vision' with 'timing, power')

Torres. He's been the best striker for the past two years.

If comparing against Drogba in his prime it'd be a competition but as of now it's just not. If you were creating a team on FIFA the first striker you'd choose would undoubtedly be Fernando Torres.

Or Eto'o, very tight between the two of them imo. However, if you were building a team in real life and had to depend on the attitudes and mentalities of the players as well as their abilities then I would side with Torres.

Eto'o? I thought this was Prem strikers only.

I'll go with Torres over Drogba any day. Great pace and great finisher. I hate to admit it because he plays for the 'pool.

And special mention to Arsenal's Eduardo. He's had some fantastic finished --- when he's healthy of course.

I think it's Torres without a doubt. If he's healthy all season he'll have the most goals in the EPL guaranteed. But who's second? I think Anelka has to be considered, and Rooney, and Robinho. If you go purely by goals though Kevin Davies of Bolton had 15... but am thinking it was a fluke. Thoughts?

wasn't there talk of Kevin Davies going somewhere this summer? Ah it's on the tip of my tongue but I can't recall! Loved having him and Beattie back in the good old days when Southampton were in the EPL...

Owen could be in with a shout again with that shock move to United.
Here's what Owen can bring to the United attack!
Note also that next season is the season for World Cup 2010 selection...Owen could be the surprise package of 2010.

fanzine, I've been thinking that maybe Capello had given Owen a heads up and said that if he can go play for a high profile club and have a good season that he would be able to play in the World Cup, plus if he and Rooney have a good season up top together this year, that's all the more reason to have Capello play them up front together for England next summer. But will SAF play a 4-3-3? or will we see Owen or Berbatov riding the bench this season?

My thoughts are that SAF will play a 4-3-1-2 formation with Berbatov in the hole, much like Cantona.
    That should be best...

That could be what ends up happening, I was just wondering because I don't think you would bench someone who has been as good over their career as Owen, but if you bench Berbatov I'm sure all he would do would be bitch and moan

Torres is so much better then Drogba. Drogba can't finish. Torres can finish and score goals when his team needs them the most

and all Drogba does is complain about everything, and writhes one the ground in pain and then is right back up in a hurry

Torres seems to be the choice but like others I think Drogba is awfully scary when he's on his game.

Torres seems to make it look so easy. Pure class.

When Drogba wants to play, he's the best striker in the world. When Torres is on the pitch, he's the best striker week-to-week. If you are building a team like Chelsea (grab as many stars as you can) then you want Drogba. But if you are building a team for the long haul, take Torres.

But pray he doesn't meet a defender like Ledley King every week.
