Eusebio has the disadvantage of being the ultimate idol of a small club currently, and without much media attention.

like Benfica... or Porto or Sampdoria or Feyenoord ..or Ajax ...or PSV ..Lazio ..or.. Marseille.. ...or Zaragoza currently

the same will happen occurs .. with ...Rabah Madjer ...Ruben Sosa .. Marcelo Salas ...Van Hanegem Willie ...Fernando Gomes .. Ove Kindvall ...

What changes a little are the pros and cons of each player.

I think so has so many many strikers in Football history combined that level of goalscoring with elite dribbling and sprinter speed.

I respectfully disagree. Like Ronaldo at his peak, with elite sprint and elite goalscoring, I only see Eusébio and Mbappé in his position. (Pelé, Messi and others are not in the same role). I believe those three players have the most similar styles. Romário and Van Basten used to dribble in tight spaces, not over 30 or 40 meters.

Yeah, but Eusébio joined a Benfica team that was already European champion and had another great, though often forgotten, striker (José Águas), along with other outstanding players. I watched Benfica’s finals from that era on Footbalia, and the player I liked the most was Mário Coluna, an amazing player. It was a great team, not just Eusébio. Without them, Eusébio failed to qualify Portugal for the 1970 and 1974 World Cups. Portugal were eliminated by Romania (1970) and Bulgaria (1974), not by superteams. In the four decisive matches, Eusébio was on the pitch and did not score. That hurts his legacy a little against other super strikers.

On the other hand, Eusébio is one of the great center forwards in history and can certainly be considered the best by some. He delivered one of the greatest individual performances in the 1966 World Cup, had outstanding European Cup campaigns (perhaps the best was 1964/65), and was both an elite goalscorer and an elite sprinter, at least at the peak of his career.

As an Argentinean, he scared us the most. Mbappe had a couple of minutes of the WC final where he was unmarkable by our defenders. But Ronaldo was like that for 80% of any game. Just a constant threat that never allowed our defenders to get comfortable. I am not comparing the two players, not at all, but I think that its relevant for the eye test.

I dunno, maybe it is an eye test thing, because I don't think numbers translate in different eras. But Ronaldo seems to me as the closest thing ever to a complete striker and was the scariest of all.

I respectfully disagree, again. These are players of 10m sprints. Once in a while, Weah, Gullit, or Spencer would make longer runs, but most of the time they were short dribbles. Ronaldo was constantly doing 40m runs. His game at Inter and Barcelona was based on that. Maybe you have in mind the Ronaldo from Real Madrid. That would make a bit more sense. Watch Ronaldo vs Atlético in 96/97, it’s completely different from the players you mentioned. He made several long runs in the same match, not just once in a while.

Elastico and assist (3:55). Ronaldo Nazário seemed more skillful than Eusébio and Mbappé.

I think there is a difference between being the most effective player over the course of the entire 90 minutes, and being the player most likely to give defenders heart-attacks.

We probably never witnessed a peak Ronaldo Nazario, because pre-injury Ronaldo was too busy humiliating defenders, rather than streamlining his movement, and allocating his stamina to maximize pragmatic impact.

How many times did we witness a "peak" Ronaldo Nazario face-off versus multiple defenders like it is a jousting tournament, and expend his energy with an "almost" superlative play? The ability to shake numerous defenders to the ground, and breaking their ankles may not be the best parameter for judging a player's raw efficacy.

The fact that Ronaldo was at one point, the best player on the planet despite this, at a tremendously young age, is more of a testament to his theoretical ceiling due to his absolutely fantastical individual toolkits, rather than absolute level reached in terms of raw efficacy.

Ronaldo Nazario probably put more thought into optimizing his routing to enjoy the nightlife maximally, than he ever did to maximize his god-given toolkits.

Yes, I watched Eusébio vs Brazil in ’72 and he looked so heavy. But he still kept a high scoring average and had a powerful shot. Still, he failed to deliver in the key games that knocked Portugal out of two World Cups, and that counts against him

I checked dbscalcio and it seems the Italian press gave Ronaldo Nazario a 7 in this match. Inter won 2–0, with 2 goals from Ronaldo Nazario (yes, both were penalties, but the first penalty was earned by Ronaldo in an individual sprint). He completed six dribbles, drew 4 fouls, and they only gave him a 7? Bizarre. I think the high fee paid for Ronaldo and the fact that he missed many games due to injury made the Italian press somewhat biased against him, if dbscalcio’s data collection is correct. Great performance.

It's just that a 7 is a very high note for the Italian press. Xavi's best ever game were also given a 7 for example. They literally never give a 10 rate. They probably didn't give a 10 for Maradona in the england 86' game
