I'll post soon the late 30s list.

Maybe, @JGGott and @tpmazembe could make some insights to these lists (esp. the 1950s - 60s period).

I can help you out with 50's and 60's players, but previous to 1940's is a bit far from my radar.

You seem to have forgotten Arthur Friedenreich (BRA), though: the first Brazilian football superstar, from when football was still an amateur sport in Brazil (it only became professional in 1933-4).

Thanks, will be nice, especially concerning brazilian players.

About Friedenreich, he's on the early-30s list. But, i consider him more a 10's and 20's player.

Interesting no ademir, I know he missed some games but I figured he would still rate well especially after the final.

Yeah, I think the same when I've been posting it.

I really don't know why, Ademir was in and out of the starting XI during the Copa America, but he clearly had an outstanding match in the final with a hat trick, also braces from Jair and Tesourinha.

In RSSSF, gives to Ademir, the Best Player award. Another debatable choice as H.Herrera in 1953, when I crossing with my own sources. In this edition I had no ratings, but I guess for "Equipo" the MVP could be Jair (also topscorer) or may be Zizinho.

At this point, I think Ademir hadn't an outstanding CA'49, at least not a "head and shoulders" performance above others centreforwards as Dionisio Arce (signed for Lazio after CA) or Carlos Gomez Sanchez (who also played a good CA in 1947).

The first thing that comes to mind, is because is a peruvian source.

From what I know about the tournament, the debatable peruvian picks are Colunga, Fuentes and Calderón. Maybe due to low competition in performing for their spots.

But in the context of the era, peruvian players were recognized in South America as the wizards of the continent, just like argentinians and brazilians, but lacked of other factors to perform better.

I mean, I think could be safe to said that in those years peruvians players were better individually than paraguayans, more skilled.

Btw, Paraguay had a golden era in those years too. Much more admirable, considering they changed their teams a lot with each subsequent tournament. I mean their local clubs couldn't retain the main players. During the 40s-50s Paraguay feeding with his stars, leagues as colombian, argentinian, brazilian, spanish, italian, etc. And despite of that (when in form) its ELO those years were around the top-10 NTs.

Anything you could get further back would be amazing. I have always been really interested in who was rated as the top players for the three time champs from Argentina in 45, 46, 47.

I recently get an El Grafico issue, dated Feb.13, 1942, just ending the XIV Copa America edition. An All Star Team isn't mentioned :( but there are some interesting notes.

Brazil played the most beautiful football, but lacked firepower to get a real chance to the title. The tournament was full of great keepers, these, alongside defensive players were the better players in this Copa America.

    Copa América 1942:

    GOALIES
    .
This tournament had very good goalies, some of them were excellent. Livingstone was brought from Chile due to bad performances of the starters and inmediately became the main star of the chilean squad. some notable matches were against Perú and Argentina.
Also at first line, was the brazilian youngster Cajú, with very good performances, especially against Argentina, saving a very close shooting from Moreno.
Other great goalkeepers were peruvian Honores with high efficiency throughtout the tournament and argentinian Gualco performing at his usual level (especially in the final).
btw, in peruvian sources is also highly praised the only cap by Soriano vs Argentina, he received three goals but must be twenty if it were not by his outstanding performance (after that he was signed by River Plate).

    BACKS.
Another position full of great performers. Brazil was rated as having the best defensive line, leading by star player Domingos, well coupled by Osvaldo. One of the best was peruvian Right Fullback, Quispe, constantly at good level. Among the chileans, played very good Salfate especially in the Pacific Derby. In the champion side, both Romero and Muñiz had a strong tourney. In Argentina was missed Alberti for the final match, meanwhile Salomón played inconsistently in the final.

    HALVES.
Uruguayan halves line had a very good tournament, but played badly in the final, surpringsinly O.Varela too. Argentinian Perucca was rated as MotM in the final, that match was the best for argentinian halves, Esperón a regular perfomer and Ramos rising his level. The brazilian Brandao was one the stars of his side, very well complemented by Afonsinho and Dino. In Chile, Cabrera played well in the pacific derby.

    FORWARDS.
The veteran Porta was the leading figure in the uruguan offensive, S.Varela was the dynamo and played injured in the final, Chirimini was important against Perú. In the argentine side, Moreno played good but not at his level in the final, also Masantonio had a good tournament but not at his best, meanwhile E.Garcia totally failed in the final. The better ofensive displays in a poor ofensive Copa were played in the brazilian side (El Grafico didn't mentioned anyone, but the famous names were Tim and Zizinho). One of the few notorious chilean was winger Riera.

Tentative Copa America 1942 ideal XI, could be (some out of position):

    --------------------------------- Livingstone (Chi)
    ------------------------ Quispe (Per) --------- D.da Guia (Bra)
    ------------ Brandao (Bra) ------ O.Varela (Uru) --------------- Perucca (Arg)
Porta (Uru) --- Moreno (Arg) --- Masantonio (Arg) --- S.Varela (Uru) --- Tim (Bra)

An interesting fact is that Chile used in this Copa a "new tactic" that tried to surprise the rivals, but get two trashing results instead.

Note that in 1941, Colo colo won the chilean championship under coaching by Ferenc Platko, with the WM, playing Jose Pastene the WM centrehalf role, known as "Half Policia".

Also Argentina was criticized by playing their Inside Forwards in a withdrawn role, far from the centreforward, the upfront man alongside the wingers. In fact most of the teams were criticized by the "lack of penetration" of their forwards.

Very interesting stuff, from some of the player descriptions it sounds as if Argentina may have outplayed Uruguay in the final, but were failed by the forwards. Interesting who got mentioned in the Uruguay front line. I would have thought Zapirain, Castro, and Ciocca all would have been mentioned. Especially Zapirain, who scored the winner vs Argentina that I remember being described as an excellent goal from distance. Interesting that Perucca outplayed the famous Uruguayan halves (Varela and Gambetta) in the final.

Surprised they referred to it as a poor offensive Copa. I guess Peru and Chile had poor performances offensively, especially Peru when you consider some of the attacking players they had in the team. Also interesting that they singled out Brazil's forward line despite being comfortably outscored by both Uruguay and Argentina over the course of the tournament.

what position actually did Victor Rodriguez Andrade play? I thought he was right fullback/half.

Uruguayan teams were the last ones (among top sides) performing the 2-3-5 system until mid 1950s, being Rodriguez Andrade a balanced wing-half in a three halves line.

btw, all "best players list" I tried to listed in the current system that most South american teams used in that respective period placing top SA players in the role which fits better his current role by then.
