In those times, there's no known media comparing players or rating players from different countries in South America. Not even Libertadores Cup was enough to rated players in each season. The closest to a SA XI of the year, was the election on Southamerican Championship. Pitifully in 60s were played only 2 tournaments with lower success than years before. So, i want to propose a different way to know about greaters stars from SA in those years. If you know something about an extraordinary SA player in these periods (achievements, titles, position, etc), please post it: Early 60s = 1960 - 62 Mid 60s = 1963 - 66 Lately 60s = 1967 - 69 Rated players in these categories: * Top-1, if you think is the best player on his positions for determinate era. * Top-3, if he is one of the best (World class). * Top-5, if he is Wordl class or International class player. * Top-10, if he's international class player. In SA the main system at 60s was 4-2-4, IMO (using by Brazil, Peru) and by others mainly on early & lately 60s. The other was 4-3-3 (more deffensive) Depending on results, i'll do some similar on previous series: Best SA players on 70s https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1293508 Best SA players on 80s https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1310851 Best SA players - 90s & 2000s https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1326660
I'll started with peruvians players for each period: 1960-62 Goalkeeper: Dimas ZEGARRA - Top 10 - Universitario Right Back: Willy FLEMING - Top 5 - Deportivo Municipal Right CentreBack: Jose FERNANDEZ - Top 3 - Universitario Left Centreback: Humberto ARGUEDAS - Top 10 - Universitario Left Back: Isaac ANDRADE - Top 3 - Sport Boys / Ferrocarril Deffensive Mid: Victor BENITEZ - Top 1 - Boca Jrs / AC Milan Claudio LOSTANAU - Top 5 - Deportivo Municipal / Monterrey Manuel GRIMALDO - Top 10 - Alianza Lima Juan DE LA VEGA - Top 10 - Alianza Lima Offensive Mid: Victor 'Pitin' ZEGARRA - Top 5 - Alianza Lima Jose CARRASCO - Top 10 - Deportivo Municipal Right Winger: Oscar 'Huaki' GOMEZ SANCHEZ - Top 5 - River Plate / Gimnasia Oscar MONTALVO - Top 10 - Deportivo Municipal Centerforward: Alberto GALLARDO - Top 10 - Sporting Cristal Eduardo 'Sucre' FLORES - Top 10 - Alianza Lima Second Forward: Juan SEMINARIO - Top 3 - Sporting Lisbon / Zaragoza Angel URIBE - Top 5 - Universitario Miguel LOAYZA - Top 10 - FC Barcelona / Boca Jrs Left Winger: Juan JOYA - Top 1 - River Plate / Peñarol
I missed main Alianza's defender from those times, so i'll changed: Adolfo DONAYRE - Top 10 - Alianza Lima - In H.Arguedas - Out Peru Resume - early 60s: 1960 - Universitario (champion) - F.Olaechea (goalscorer) 1961 - Cristal - Gallardo 1962 - Alianza - Gallardo
In SA, there's no NT tournament that period, only WC and qualifiers. So, the main guide is Libertadores Cup and Intecontinental Cup. Libertadores Cup Resume - early 60s: 1960 - Peñarol (champion) - Olimpia (runner-up) - Spencer (goalscorer) 1961 - Peñarol (champion) - Palmeiras (runner-up) - Panzutto (goalscorer) 1962 - Santos (champion) - Peñarol (2nd) - Spencer, Coutinho, Raymondi Also, 1961 - Peñarol won Intercontinental Cup 1962 - Santos won Intercontinental Cup And other candidates are players who shine in the strongest Euro teams from these years: (Barza, AC Milan, Zaragoza, etc.) and don't be naturalized for WC'62.
I know I sent you this in a PM previously but just for everyone else: I just wanted to share with you a listing that was included in World Soccer in 1961 that might be of some interest. They summarised two lists produced by a French and an Italian magazine of players rated as being world class (in both Europe and S America) I've just included the South Americans below: Players rated in South America Rated by both: Pele (Brazil) Sanfilippo (Argentina) Rated by Il Calcio Gilmar (Brazil) Roma (Argentina) Martinez (Uruguay) D Santos (Brazil) Bellini (Brazil) Djalma (Brazil) Guidi (Argentina) Zito (Brazil) Amaro (Brazil) Benitez (Peru) Davoine (Uruguay) Julinho (Brazil) Coutinho (Brazil) Borges (Uruguay) Pepe (Brazil) Jimenez (Argentina) Chinezinho (Brazil) Rated by Mirroir du Football Pando (Argentina) Delem (Brazil) Loayza (Peru) Maidana (Uruguay) Perez (Uruguay)
Thanks again mate, it's a great info, considering that period. From the list that you kindly share us, i don't hear abour AMARO (Brazil). About peruvians, it surprised me that Loayza appears, i though that he wasn't a starter for Boca. Although, a Milan's scout tripped to Argentine for watch Loayza plays, and his countryman, Benites, did a hard work for give him clear balls, for Loayza's showcasing. The effect was the opposite, and Milan signed up Benites and not Loayza BTW, i expected that Joya and Seminario rated world class in 1961.
The magazine also published (either that month or a near one) about three "World XI" selections from readers in response to one from Eric Batty (a WS journalist) and in one of those Seminario was selected. Edit: Not to clutter the thread but the selections were: World Soccer’s best XI Grosics (Hungary) Bergmark (Sweden) Nilton Santos (Brazil) Martin Verges (Spain) Santamaria (Uruguay/Spain) Ante Zanetic (Yugoslavia) Julinho (Brazil) Pele (Brazil) Di Stefano (Argentina/Spain) Puskas (Hungary/Spain) Gento (Spain) World XIs of some readers Schmied (Austria) Djalma Santos (Brazil) Nilton Santos (Brazil) Hanappi (Austria) John Charles (Wales) Szymaniak (W Germany) Hamrin (Sweden) Fontaine (France) Seeler (W Germany) Pele (Brazil) Seminario (Peru) Ramallets (Spain) Bergmark (Sweden) Nilton Santos (Brazil) Martin Verges (Spain) Segarra (Spain) Moreau (France) Sandor (Hungary) Pele (Brazil) Simonsson (Sweden) Puskas (Hungary/Spain) Gento (Spain) Yashin (USSR) Djalma Santos (Brazil) Pachin (Spain) Liedholm (Sweden) Bellini (Brazil) Orlando (Brazil) Rahn (W Germany) Kopa (France) Simonsson (Sweden) Schiaffino (Uruguay/Italy) Bobby Charlton (England)
Excelent comme, You always had the hot news!!!! I'm not familiar with Moreau and Zanetic. BTW, it's a great great list
Hello I can do some suggestions of colombian players. -Delio Gamboa - Millonarios, Forward. Best colombian player of that age. he played 1962 world cup. - Efraín Sánchez - San Lorenzo, Medellín, Goalkeeper. One of the best goalkeepers in colombian history, even better for some peopple than Óscar Córdoba and Faryd Mondragón, he was the first colombian player who play in foreign team (San Lorenzo de Almagro - Argentina). -Francisco "Cobo" Zuluaga - Millonarios, Defender. He is consider one of the best defender of colombian history, he played 1962 world cup. according with this page ( http://www.futbolsiemprefutbol.com/11centralestcnicos.htm ) he is consider the best defender sweeper in the history of the country. From Bolivia you could considerate Victor Ugarte one of the best bolivian players ever, first player from bolivia who played in Argentina (San Lorenzo), he won the 1963 Copa América and is the second goalscorer of bolivian national team. Also the goalkeeper of that team who won the Copa América in 1963, is consider one of the best goalkeeper of that age in South América, his name is Vicente Arraya. And from Paraguay Eulogio Martínez one of the best forward of FC barcelona history. great forward very underrated, i think even he deserve be in de first 11 in this team. Hope this information will be useful for you.
I'm sorry i forgot rate the players Rated players in these categories: * Top-1, if you think is the best player on his positions for determinate era. * Top-3, if he is one of the best (World class). * Top-5, if he is Wordl class or International class player. * Top-10, if he's international class player. Colombia: -Delio "maravilla" Gamboa: Top-5 -Efraín Sánchez: Top-3 -Francisco "cobo" Zuluaga: Top-10 Bolivia: -Víctor Ugarte: Top-5 -Vicente Arraya: Top-10 Paraguay: Eulogio Martínez: Top-1 (maybe not the best but very close)
