My knowledge of Pelé does not exceed his World Cup games in 1970

those dozen or so santos games produced by his fans and available on YouTube
Not an easy watch because of the grainy footage quality

those 100-300 goal compilations(with the majority being scored in non competitive contexts-in the compilations I mean not his career)

    escape to victory

    and that’s all

There’s no hate here(in what you quoted)
That is literally the extent of my knowledge of Pelé

and what I said about the reality of those lengthy Pelé goal compilations circulating the net is also not a lie.
    Like it or not

truth be told my first ever viewing of Pelé was as a child
the BBC documentary the boys from Brazil
Not when it was first aired of course

Ruud had games in the 2000s? Anyway, I'll restart that thread when I am done with this. We have all our favorites. With regards to players that never played for Feyenoord (so Henrik Larsson, Cruijff and Gullit all don't qualify) I'd say Bergkamp is my favorite. Arsenal was undefeated in away games, against Bayern and Barcelona too, when he stood on the pitch (unfortunately, Sofascore doesn't show the ratings for those matches, but I'd say his profile for all the tournaments is very strong really... euro 2000 as a whole among the highest rated in history; he had valuable interventions against elite teams in every tournament he played). Could tackle too.

David Silva 7.6 vs Inter (21/02/07)
    Bergkamp 7.4 vs Celta (10/03/04)

    ----------------------------------------------

So, Fabregas joins the 10.0 ratings. It is a clear outlier for him (all others are below 9.0). Maybe it is possible to do a shadow list, and then take the 2nd best rating...

Tevez 8.1 vs Dynamo Kyiv (07/11/07)

    Others at 7.5 or above: 7.8 vs Sporting (27/11/07), 7.8 vs Aalborg (10/12/08), 7.7 vs Roma (09/04/08), 7.5 vs Lyon (20/02/08)

He has 18 rated games in the Champions League. 5 are 7.5 or better. 6 are below 7.0.

    Crespo 8.6 vs Shakhtar (24/11/04)

    Others at 7.5 or above: 8.3 vs Liverpool (25/05/05), 8.1 vs Anderlecht (23/11/05), 7.7 vs Sporting (22/11/06)

4 in 27 games. I don't know what it is but he has 20 games at 7.0 or lower and with a very high proportion of them below the starting rate of 6.5. He does have that Liverpool game in the final and I suppose many finalists don't have a better grade (Henry, Ronaldinho a year later doesn't have a better one, nor has Ronaldo and Messi in this decade).

    Drogba 9.2 vs Rosenborg (28/11/07)

    Others at 7.5 or higher: 9.1 vs Levski Sofia (27/09/06), 9.1 vs Atletico Madrid (03/11/09), 8.5 vs PSG (14/09/04), 8.4 vs Liverpool (30/04/08), 8.4 vs Liverpool (14/04/09), 8.3 vs Bayern (06/04/05), 8.1 vs Schalke (24/10/07), 7.8 vs Barcelona (18/10/06), 7.8 vs Juventus (10/03/09), 7.7 vs Liverpool (25/04/07), 7.7 vs Liverpool (08/04/09), 7.6 vs Porto (29/09/04), 7.6 vs Valencia (03/10/07), 7.6 vs Apoel (08/12/09)

15 games at 7.5 or above, 51 games rated. There are 22 games rated below 7.0. Decent/solid profile I'd say.

Fernando Torres 8.9 vs Porto (28/11/07)

    Others at 7.5 or higher: 7.9 vs Marseille (11/12/07), 7.7 vs Inter (11/03/08), 7.6 vs Real Madrid (10/03/09), 7.5 vs Chelsea (08/04/09)

5 games at 7.5 or better, 22 rated games. 14 are rated below 7.0.

Van der Vaart 8.9 vs CSKA (06/12/06 - MOTM)

    Others at 7.5 or higher: 8.7 vs Bate Borisov (17/09/08 - MOTM), 7.7 vs Celta de Vigo (04/11/03 - 2nd best), 7.7 vs Zenit (30/09/08 - MOTM), 7.6 vs Porto (01/11/06 - MOTM), 7.5 vs Marseille (08/12/09)

There are 17 games in the database. 6 are rated 7.5 or higher. When excluding his Ajax spell you'd get 5 out of 10.

This is a real pity, because of this:

Unfortunately no games from before november 2003 (that is his only rated game of this season). I think that was his best phase in an Ajax shirt. Database shows 10.0 rated league games for Real Madrid (which isn't an automatic given, certainly not with this low sample). Interestingly, when he scored the goal against Arsenal he is shown as defensive midfielder by them, in average position and function.

Outside this frame you also have a Milan game from 2011 (7.6, MOTM), Real Madrid game of 2011 (7.7, MOTM), Portugal 2012 (7.6, great goal), Cameroon 2010 (7.9, MOTM, Van Bommel also 7.9). His best rated season in WhoScored is 2010-11 with 7.44 (best of Tottenham, 11th overall in the league). But they start in 2010 and that's precisely the point of this exercise... I see Rafael has made some new friends with his comments about Declan Rice.

The 2012 Portugal match is the last rated match, until three cameo appearances for Betis in 2016 (6.8, 6.7, 7.0). Then there is a Barcelona game where they're beaten 4-0 and Van der Vaart is the best rated of his team, they show.

    ---------------

    Tomorrow the continuation, I think.

The flawed assumption is that he is not a complete attacker unless he has an arbitrary VOLUME of dribbles and goals? The key is how he combines his assets for end product at the end of the day. That is the ONLY question to be asked of a footballer. How do you use the TOOLS at your disposal to positively affect the game?

Andriy Shevchenko the ballon dor winner was nowhere near the best Shevchenko

    nowhere near

Sheva in his last two seasons at Dynamo Kiev and his first two at Milan was a phenomenon

Everyone has their preference for what constitutes a great dribbler

I prefer to watch this style of direct dribbling infinitely more than the midfield dribbling of Andres iniesta,Eden hazard, zinedine zidane,Luis Figo etc
These are highlights from the ELO number one ranked in Europe and/or champions league matches.

While I agree with the post, the last comment is complete nonsense - all those players dribbled prolifically in the final third or 1v1 vs the wingback

I think the time is right to do Luka Modric next.

Van der Vaart isn't a favorite of mine in the way Van Persie is:
    Best players of the noughties? ( 2000 - 2010 ) | Page 20 | BigSoccer Forum

Van der Vaart was also more like "what you see is what you get". I think he was a wonderfully skilled player - in 'talent' he might have been superior to Van Persie - and there are a few years (apart) where e.g. 'Castrol Index' showed him as a top 10 or even top 5 player in the world (for the 2nd HSV spell top 10-20). The Rory Smith book "Expected Goals" about 'data revolution in football' has a special mention for him. Van der Vaart is now also married to a friendly wife and learned from the past it seems.

But what seriously speaks against him is that he was only a starter for the national team in 2008, with then Ajax in control of the national team (in 2006 he was coming back from injury though but Van Basten didn't think you can play them all anyway; even Van Nistelrooij was famously benched against Portugal). On the plus side: maybe the national team played then the best football between 2006 and 2014, even in the Russia match where they went out in extra time. That he didn't return from his 2013 injury (missing 2014WC too) and Real Madrid, among presidential change, moved him out... that is not so important for me (initially without squad number, he returned in the team and finished the campaign as Real Madrid his top provider, before moving to Tottenham Hotspur).

Some short examples of 'skills' worth highlighting (if people want to see... many don't - in the 4th video he tries to be Maradona)

Van der Vaart vs. four (Viking Stavanger) (youtube.com)
Rafael van der Vaart great skill vs Valencia CL 2003 - YouTube

Maybe I am unfair though when I compare him 'unfavorably' to Van Persie or Van Nistelrooij. His best years for Ajax are 2000 to 2003 imho (I said that before and there are no games for that in the database). With the last second exit to AC Milan in 2003 quarter-finals, too.

    Luka Modric

His first rated game is 2006 vs Japan in the World Cup. Came in at the 78th minute, rated 7.3. His second is euro 2008 against Austria (7.7), then Germany (6.5 - yellow card), Turkey (7.7). I'd love to see his grades for the two England games (2006 and 2007 qualifiers), the Spain 2006 game (played 2nd half). He played in 2008 against Netherlands, with Van Basten as manager, and admittedly he wasn't so good there (0-3 loss for his team as well).

The home game, not the decisive Wembley match:
    Luka Modric vs England (H) 07/08 - Euro 2008 Qualifers (youtube.com)

This are unfortunately the only rated games before 2010 in the database. No club games, not even the league.

The next one is 6.3 vs Twente (29/09/10), where he was subbed out in the 80th minute. 6.1 vs Inter (20/10/10), subbed out in the 10th minute for a goalkeeper after a red card for his team. 7.6 vs Inter (02/11/10), 8.5 vs Bremen (24/11/10), 6.9 Milan (15/02/11 - 60th minute substitute coming in), 6.9 vs Milan (09/03/11), 6.3 vs Real Madrid (05/04/11), 6.5 vs Real Madrid (13/04/11 - out 82th).

Then we get euro 2012 (where he is, in his favor, 2nd best of his team in the narrow Spain game; with the penalty incident and encroachment).

After this you start seeing him in a Real Madrid shirt with indeed some 'low' ratings in his first (and famous) season, 2012-13. 6.8, 6.7, 6.7, 6.4, 6.7, 6.8, 7.2 (vs Galatasaray in QF), 6.2 (first Dortmund semi final game). But also: 8.9 vs Ajax in group stage, 8.2 in the 2nd leg against Man United in the round of 16, 8.0 in 2nd leg vs Dortmund semi-final.

2013-14: 7.4, 7.7, 7.7, 7.4, 7.7, 7.1 (vs Schalke), 8.4, 8.0 (both Dortmund, quarter final, MOTM in 2nd leg), 6.9, 8.2 (Bayern semi finals), 8.3 (vs Atletico, final, 3rd of his team behind CR7 and 'gamesmanship' Sergio Ramos). Next one is 7.5 vs Brazil in the World Cup, then 7.3 and 6.5.

Unfortunately, I cannot include him in above overview...

Well spotted. Didn't see that. If you go to Henry his list of games though, it shows a N/A for that match.
Thierry Henry stats and ratings | Sofascore

The reason is, most likely, that they don't have the full (accurate) data for that game to assess it by the same standards as other games (and later games, past 2010).

As remarked by me here on page 17 of the thread, the same is true for Van Nistelrooij. Well possibly a few more 10.0 rated games but his list of games show N/A and therefore not included. I do the same with Henry.

Later in the evening/night I'll continue.
