I still think that Lee Young-Pyo lacks the shooting skills to become a real offensive threat. He's as terrible shooter as Kim Nam-Il is, and he has to improve on that.

But Lee's definitely one of the best dribblers, and in my mind, probably the best two way player in Korea (its close between him and Song Chong-gug)

 

Song Chong Gug was just invited to represent Korea in the upcoming World XI v. Real Madrid match to commemorate the centennial of Real. I heard Nakata will represent Japan but don't know any of the other players selected to the World XI squad. No doubt Park Ji Sung, Ahn Jung Hwan or Hong Myung Bo could have been picked as well, but Song has the windfall of being not so far away at Feyenoord and in a better league. Seol Ki Hyun also has a case given his good start this season, but there are so many productive players from other countries to choose among for those striker spots.

Is Lee Young-Pyo and Lee Yong-Pyo two different persons? How can one person be the best dribbler, yet be the worst in ball control?

Ahn Jung-hwan best head finisher? Are you just basing that on two goals he scored at the World Cup? Remember that Ahn never scored a header in his professional career until he scored one with perugia and then two at the World Cup. i can think of several better than him (Seol, Choi Yong-soo, Yoo)


Hyok, give me a break with the Lee Dong-guk bashing. You're not impressing anyone with that "my girlfriend used to be DG Lee's girlfriend" crap. He's slow fine, but he's probably one of the better "killers" when he has the ball. Of course, he's hitting a rough patch lately, but to say that he's worse than, say, someone like Cha Du-ri, at finishing is just stupid.

Also, how can place someone like Choi Sung-guk on a pedestal if he hasn't even played an international A match yet? i can be real creative too playing on my club team when i have all the time in the world to make decisions. The level of play on junior teams and national teams is tremendously different. Let's see Choi be real creative and show some fancy ball controlling skills when he gets banged around by some European thugs or gets rushed by Edgar Davids or something. Until he has a stretch of games like Lee Chun-soo did in 2000 (the two game series with Yugoslavia's national squad) I remain to be convinced.

Personally, I think Ahn Jung-hwan is the best offensive player in Korea. Other than his relative lack of aerial dominance, I think he is the most balanced, creative, and skillful player eligible to play for Korea. I'm also leaning towards Park Ji-sung in the near future, for his giant-killing abilities.

 

my thoughts. yoo sang-cheol and lee yong-pyo can't kick the ball. Lee yong-pyo can dribble and yoo sang-cheol can head the ball well but they both have no control when they kick the freaking ball. lee dong-guk probably has the best finish but he is too slow, does not work hard enough so he's basically useless. with that being said...

although lee yong-pyo has more dribbling technique, seol ki-hyun is lot more powerful and so he can break past the defenders better than lee yong pyo can.

I'm gonna try to break down pros and cons for some Korean attackers...

Hwang Sun-hong:
Pros: Good shooter, good aerial specialist (volleys and headers), good passer for a forward, experience.
Cons: under pressure situations he usually chokes on finishing (like in big games), bad stamina and below average speed but that's because of his age...

Choi Yong-soo:
Pros: Another good aerial specialist (with his headers), better than average speed, not afraid to go physical with defenders, and has great poise.
Cons: Big game and big chance choker (e.g: Korea vs Belgium WC 98, Korea vs U.S WC 2002), has a temper, goes into slumps a lot and is therefore inconsistent. Not a great ballhandler.

Seol Ki-Hyeon:
Pros: Great runner and hard dribbler who will always create chances down the left side where he likes to play. Above average finisher (although he didn't show that in the WC this yr), good strength and stamina. Above average in Headers.
Cons: Bad crosser of the ball, seems to miss a lot in important situations (but that's a problem with all Korean forwards)

Ahn Jung-hwan:
Pros: Great technique, awesome dribbler, accurate shooter and passer, knows how to create chances on his own.
Cons: Don't let world cup deceive you, he's average at header at best, and needs to improve on that. Holds on to the ball too long at times. Stamina used to be a problem, but he seemed to overcome that a little.

Lee Dong-Gook:
Pros: I still say he's the best finisher in front of the net when he gets the chance out of all Korean forwards. Dangerous shooter of the ball, knows how to create spaces for himself. Good crosser. Improved a lot on headers recently.
Cons: Not persistant. Walks around too much, below average speed for a forward, poor dribbler, very inconsistent.

Cha Doo-Ri:
Pros: Mad fast, not a bad passer from what I've seen. Brings a lot of energy into the offense.
Cons: Can't finish for beans, poor dribbler/techinician, lack of experience.

Park Ji-Sung:
Pros: Comes through and actually finishes in big games (expect against Germany), very creative, good dribbler/techinician, good passer, great stamina.
Cons: Lacking in the air, no power, lacks physical aspects of the game.

Lee Chun-Soo:
Pros: Real fast, above average dribbler, gritty, never gives up. Has really improved on free kicks. Good corner taker. Shoots pretty well.
Cons: no power or physical game, carries the ball too much sometimes, has to improve on his passing a little.

Lee Young-Pyo:
Pros: One of the best dribblers in Korea, good stamina and speed, great passer and crosser, very creative.
Cons: Horrible shooter.

Yoo Sang-Chul:
Pros: Excellent with volleys and headers, good physical player. He can shoot with good power. He can create chances in midfield.
Cons: Not a great finisher or shooter in general because he doesn't have too much accuracy. Only an average passer at best. Not great at dribbling.

Ko Jong-soo:
Pros: Great shooter, One of the best in Free kicks, unpredictable (remember that 50 yard shot in K-League recently?), good dribbler, creative and accurate passer.
Cons: can only play for 45 minutes (horrible stamina), lacks speed. Seems to get injured every day of the week, twice on sundays.

Song Chong-gug:
Pros: Good shooter from distance, Excellent stamina and speed. Quite consistant. Good passer.
Cons: He's not really great at dribbling yet. He's only very average in overall offensive abilities (but he makes that up being excellent in defense as well)

I hope the 2004 Olympics unearth Korea's next wave of players much like 2000 did for Song, Seol, Lee Chun-soo, Lee Young-pyo, and Kim Nam-il.

As for Park Jin-sup, he never impressed Hiddink although he got tested like..once.

I never really thought Jinsup Park was that good. Besides, his physical abillity isn't good anyways so his only strength(wit) really wasn't sufficient enough to break into the NT level.

 

I also feel bad about Dong-guk Lee. I still think Lee is one of the best killers Korea have. He's just in long terrible slump(or that's what I want to believe). His movement as a foward isn't impressive, but we all gotta admit his killing ability when he is sharp.

I personally think the surgery after AC2000 killed him. He's STILL only 23 right now. He has time. Yong-soo Choi was 24 when he became a national hero in 1997. I say Lee can still improve and come back to his normal killer Dong-guk Lee.

Dribbling and ball control are two different elements of soccer. U may dribble like ronaldo but u might has the sorriest traps in the world. Lee Young-pyo just cannot trap the goddam ball. The moves he does is predictable cuz its like a routine for him.

Good finisher?! Yea i admit he has "that shot". He's deadly and I wouldnt want to be defending against him. But He's slow, has crap control, inconsistent, and he's worse than Cha Du-ri at best.

I think Ahn Jung-hwan is THE best Korean player and I too think Park Ji-sung will be our new savior.
