I have a hard time coming up with ten, but here it goes. In alphabetical order Before Sunrise/Before Sunset Richard Linklater (1995/2004) Dead Man Jim Jarmusch (1994) Election Alexander Payne (1999) Fargo Cohen brothers (1996) The Ice Storm Ang Lee (1997) Lamerica Gianni Amelio (1994) Mystic River Clint Eastwood (2003) Red (Rouge) Krzysztof Kieslowski (1994) The Return (Vozvrashcheniye) Andrei Zvyagintsev (2003) Topsy-Turvy Mike Leigh (1999)
Twenty-seven people have read this thread but no one has posted a list. Does this mean that my list is definitive?
Here are some favorites I would have on my list: Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas Terry Gilliam (1998) The Big Lebowski Joel Coen (1998) O Brother, Where Art Thou? Joel Coen (2000)
This is probably closer to a personal fave list than a definitive "best" list, but here's the ones that have stuck with me in the past 10 years. Pulp Fiction - Tarantino Red/White/Blue trilogy - Kieslowski Fargo - Coen Bros. Dogtown and Z-boys - Stacy Peralta (documentary) Lord of the Rings trilogy - Jackson Trainspotting - Boyle Amores Perros - Iñarritu Fight Club - Fincher Best in Show - Guest Hoop Dreams - Steve James (documentary)
The Thin Red Line (1998) Fallen Angels (1995) Solaris (2002) Amores Perros (2000) Safe (1995) Requiem for a Dream (2000) Ratcatcher (2000) George Washington (2000) Red (1995) Bottle Rocket (1996)
Pulp Fiction '94 Eat Drink Man Woman '94 The Usual Suspects '95 Big Lebowski '98 Run Lola Run '98 All About My Mother '99 Monsoon Wedding '01 Kill Bill Vol 1 '03 Kill Bill Vol 2 '04 Of course there are probably a dozen other movies I've not thought of. Tarantino really created the mood for the last ten years. So many movies were Pulp Fiction wanna-be's. So I began and ended my list with his films. He really didn't do much inbetween, but Hollywood tried to do Pulp Fiction for 10 more years. I wonder if people will try to do Kill Bill rip-offs for the next decade? The Coen brothers have been great. Lebowski is my favorite, but they made a lot of great films over the last 10 years. Man Who Wasn't There is probably the most underrated. The black and white cinemotography was excellent. Brad Pitt suprisingly turned into an edgy actor, and led three films that almost made my list: Seven, 12 Monkeys, and Fight Club. Many non-U.S. films are deserving, though. The quality of the movies that make it to the US are considerably higher, mostly, because a foreign film won't make 50 million on it's first week like any crappy, over-hyped movie in the US will. Maybe there should be a "Worst movies of the last 10 years" thread. Probably create more controversy Quango
Amelie The Big Hit (best action/comedy ever) The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys Hedwig and the Angry Inch Rushmore Donnie Darko Confessions of a Dangerous Mind O Brother Where Art Thou
The Gladiator Lord Of The Rings Trilogy Saving Private Ryan The Pianist Sixth Sense The Green Mile Jackass The Movie :d :d Cast Away Ring Matrix 1
Ten Year window makes it a bit tougher, as the overall quality of films has plummeted. Agree with: Red ( Kieslowski ) but liked White better. Fargo Hoop Dreams ( this slays! ) Fight Club LOTR 1 ( others good, but not best! ) Did not see: Trainspotting Amores Perros Would add: Braveheart ( ok, so I'm an emotional wanker ) Life Is Beautiful ( at least Begnini won best actor ) Traffic ( if only for the Benicio Del Toro parts )
No particular order: Shawshank Redemption Fargo Saving Private Ryan Trainspotting Pulp Fiction Oh Brother Where Art Thou American Beauty LA Confidential The Usual Suspects Life As A House
Movies everyone has seen and watched again or should. Pulp Fiction The Royal Tenenbaums Amores Perros The Usual Suspects The Big Lebowski Trainspotting Fight Club The Matrix Braveheart Lord of the rings Best of the rest: Forest Gump, Ed Wood, Dancer in the dark, Saving Private Ryan, Rushmore, Seven, Bullets over Broadway, Shawshank Redemption, Talk to her, The Sixth Sense, O' Brother, American Beauty, Gladiator, The Pianist, Adaptation, Lost in Translation, City of God, Kill Bill.
My choices (btw, do 1994 films count? otherwise I'll have to change three of my choices) The Usual Suspects Seven Fight Club Cidade de Deus (City of God) The Shawshank Redemption Pulp Fiction Clerks The Pianist Casino Léon (The Professional) There are many other good movies that other people mentioned though (Amelie, Gladiator, Forrest Gump, LOTR - my personal favorite was the Two Towers, the Coen Brothers films, Trainspotting, etc.) that I liked as well, but I just chose to go with the ones mentioned above.
OK, Shawshank Redemption Sleepers * LA Confidential High Fidelity * Lord of the Rings * Renaissance Man The Full Monty Asterix signify the three that have made my all time Top 10
The Big Lebowski Fargo Bottle Rocket Rushmore The Royal Tennenbaums The Ice Storm Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Lone Star You Can Count On Me Traffic
