I know most of use are disappointed about the end of the season, but what was everyones favorite moment. Mine had to be that great comeback vs NE in Foxboro. I remember sitting on my couch swearing, thinking our season was over. The out of no where we started to try. Q2 got us a goal. Marco got us a PK converted by Q2, which really seemed to give the team life. THen while NE was confused how they lost the lead, Eski had a nice cross to Kovalenko. Then Q2 setup Eski nice for the fianl tally.
Best moment of the season: Any tailgate. 2nd best moment of the season: When it was finally all over.
The best, the most pure soccer moment of the entire season was Petke's header against Columbus. That was so great it even made an old curmudgeon like me smile from ear to ear. It's a shame what happened afterwards though ...
The win in NY (with all those screaming United fans there to help it happen), the NE comeback, and - finally - making the playoffs.
Well... now that the season's over, and we reflect on the disappointments or whatever... I just want to say that this season was so much better than last season... and for me it definitely started at the Open Practice when I joined the Barra Brava. That day was definitely the highlight for me even if it wasn't the most exciting. After that day, supporting United changed for me. The way I watched the game changed, they way I thought about United changed... All the good moments became much better, and the bad moments... well, they weren't so bad since I had someone to suffer with... it sure beat watching the game on the quiet side... even I actually "watched" the game better from section 205. Open practice was definitely my highlight.
(This'll give you an idea of what I've felt this year...) My best moment was the Freedom winning the Founders' Cup.
Best: The Massachusetts Miracle (part 2) Waking up at 1:30 to see United thoroughly dominate the Scum Representing in La Norte Worst: Nearly every other game this season, especially the 1-0 defeat in the Mordorlands
The moments leading up to the kickoff for the opening game. There was a logical reason to have hope right up to United's first touch.
The Foxboro miracle at the end of July, definitley. I remember punching the floor when Twellman put in his two, and thinking that it was all over. The comeback came out of the blue. Totally unexpected. It triggered our rich vein of midseason form and the most heady days of this season. Too bad we botched it. 3000th post!!!!!!!!
Best moment was taking my 3 year old to his first game and having him know the cheers On the field, the Mass Miracle has to be the defining moment of the team. Eight tenths *#*#*#*#, 2 tenths brilliant.
1) the comeback in NE 2) the DOMINATION of the Scum in the 2-0 win at their place (the only time we played as a team all season IMHO) 3) Earnie giving me his jersey after his 2 assist game for his first home points of the season
Petke's header vs. Columbus was a scintillating moment. The Mass Miracle was a scintillating few minutes. But that's just me.
My vote goes to the Cerritos goal that put us up 2-0 at the Swamp. That was the Pickett's Charge of DCU's season, the high-water mark, as good as it got. At that time we were solidly in third place in the east, and in the semis of the USOC. With that win, we were on the threshold of second place and the odds-on fave to get to the finals of the USOC, but more than that we were looking really promising--I remember thinking that Cerritos + Stewart up top could be the solution to our offensive woes, and the rest of the team was finally showing signs of coming together as a unit. I got up early to watch the game on TiVo (I think it was on at like 2am or something ridiculous like that), and when Cerritos scored, I really believed that we were coming together jsut at the right time for the playoffs (even Wynalda was convinced we were the playoff dark horse). Then Rimando got injured--that worried me, though Warren looked great coming in as a replacement. Then Benny went down too in the next game, and Mike Magee tallied at the death for the scum, and by the USOC semi I remember thinking we had suddenly gone back to looking as nervous and unconvincing and ragged as we had for the first half of the season. You all know the rest. But man, for just a second when Cerritos scored at the Swamp, I really thought we had a shot to make something special out of this season, and that was a great feeling.
This was no 1 for me but, as written above, it was also when Rimando and Benny went down. Season in a nutshell.
The home game against LA, when Dema and Olsen scored early on to silence LA's "fans." I was with a friend sitting in a sea of teal and puke yellow and there was nothing sweeter this season than standing up and celebrating those two goals and dodging airborne beer cups.
The second goal against LA was the best moment on the field. La Norte exploded and we began taunting a whole buch of retards cheering for the Galaxy. We sang the entire game and reminded all the Gals "1996 and 1999, in case you don't remember we'll tell you one more time" Off the field, the celebration in the tunnel after we clinched the playoff spot was incredible! If you missed it, you missed the purest passion we've ever seen for DC United. The singing, drumming and hordes of curious onlookers is what it's all about. Sachin
um chili's post almost exactly mirrors my sentiments of how good I felt about this team a short time ago and how Ben Olsen's injury was a nasty turning point for us. Best moment # 1: Etch winning the PK for the tying goal against New England in the big comeback. He faked an injury to help sell the foul by Kante at the edge of the penalty area and then was prevented by the officials from taking the PK y since he had temporarily received some magical "treatment" - didn't matter because Q2 converted and the Revs were only halfway done with their late-game collapse. That started us off on our best stretch of the season where we won 6 and lost 3. This culminated in... Best moment # 2: Earnie stealing the ball from Joe Addo at midfield and dribbling all the way inot the penalty area, drawing defenders and then dishing it off to Cerritos for a really easy finish. 2-0 DC over the Mutts and to add some injury to the insult Ricardo Clark later bloodied his own nose using his face to try to head in a corner kick! Both these great moments occurred on the road so I only saw them on TV. Unfortunately the most unforgettable moment in person was the unbelievable, malevolent, brilliant treachery of bringing on "goalkeeper Eddie Gaven" as a 4th sub on a very hot July afternoon. And the resulting outcome. Hey, at least I finally caught a t-shirt in that game!
