The salaries of every MLS player for 2004 have been published by socceramerica (http://www.socceramerica.com/article.asp?Art_ID=562134198). Times are slow right now in MLS, so let's play a little game. What's the best 11 you can buy for $1,000,000 of Guaranteed Salary? Choose only from the salaries listed. The $1,000,000 of guaranteed salary is an arbitrary figure but it's in the ballpark of what the salaries of starting 11's in MLS are. Please post your entry below, with individual and total salaries in the post. In case of dispute over which is the best, take the line-ups in dispute and play them off against each other in the latest FIFA soccer game, assuming this is possible and unless somebody has a better idea for choosing the best.

Neat idea but I think $1.5 million is a more accurate number for the starting 11. The seven benchwarmers are gonna average around $35k.

I see what you're saying and it is correct, but also remember that we're choosing just the bargains, so the total ought to be less than what real teams' salaries are. I'd just as soon keep it at $1mm

    --Pat Noonan(50k)--Preki(149k)--DMB(153k)
    ------Damani Ralph(25k)-Carlos Ruiz(50k)

    Total 872k

Seeing as I've got a bunch of room left I'd look to change some of that, but I'm too lazy right now.

IM too lazy to start completely on my own, so i used tmagics as a jumping off point.

    ------John Busch(38k)
    -Nat Borchers(24k)-Jim Curtin (55k)-Eddie Robinson(45k)
    Richard Mulrooney(161k)-Kyle Beckerman(31k)
    --Brian Mullan(34k)-Jose Cancela (144k)-Brad Davis(60k)
    ------Damani Ralph(25k)-Landon Donovan(367k)

All for a cool 984k, give or take a few from rounding off.

And yeah, I think i could make it a bit better over a 30 game season if i took Donovan off it, but Donovan is worth a goal a game inthe playoffs, and thats worth 367k if you ask me.

    This is fun!

    -----------------------J Busch(39k)
    -N Borchers(24k)-C Marshall (0k*)-E Robinson(46k)-T Dunivant(52k)
    -------B Mullan(35k)-R Mulrooney(161k)--DMB(153k)
    ----------------------B Convey(143k)
    -------------Freddy Adu(0k*)-L Donovan(367k)

    Total 1020k

    *P40/salary exempt

(To get under a million, you could swap K Martino for B Convey and end up at 947k)

I dont think using the P40 exemption is that appropriate, as it lets you just get a free player basicly that in reality could be payed quite handsomely. It defeats the bargain hunting fun.

Edit: But I still think my team would beat yours!

if u dont have ruiz as a bargain striker at his 50k salary u have some major issues to get over. ralph too. those guys are up there in the top 5 at least ruiz is and the combined salary is less than that of 4 landon donovans.

    Excellent point Turk.

    ---------Ruiz(30) Ralph(24)
    Noonan(39) Beckerman(31) Joseph(25) Mullan(34)
    Burciaga(27) Borchers(24) Gray(33) Suarez(34)
    ----------Warren(25)

Entire quality MLS team for less (326) than what Josh Wolff pulled in. :D
And this team would school some MLS teams at under 20% of the cost.
EDIT: used non-guaranteed salary, so make that (362). I still like it.

Well its not the best, cheap lineup you can give, but the best lineup for 1 million. So you want bargains to save up to splurge. So maybe not bargain hunting, but value hunting.

We ought to limit each team to 3 SI's. My bad, I hadn't considered it before.

I'd put this team up against any $362,000 team in the world.

The only other way you'er going to get a $362k team is if it's full of ametuers, or if it's a kepper and one field player.
