My top three would read like this 3.Oliver Kahn 2. Peter Schmeical 1. Gordie Banks does anyone know where i can get a video of Gordie's save against Pele? i really reeally want to see it.
Soviet Union's Lev Yashin (the Black Spider) is said to be the best keeper ever. Rinat Dasaev is another honorable mention for the commies.
I guess my favorites are 1 Pat Jennings, my fave of all time!!! Neville Southall, the first great Welsh goalie I liked Kasey Keller, because he was the US keeper when I started to follow the team. I'm glad Friedel got the chance to play in this world cup though. For the Future I like Howard but hope Adin Brown does well too because he played for Tampa. I could go on and on an about goalies I liked: Mervyn Day, Joe Corrigan, Peter Shilton, Meola, Paul Cooper. Gary Bailey, Schumacher, Gary Sprake (never seen play but heard the stories good and bad), Bruce Grobbelaar, the goalie who wasn't afraid to venture off his line. And of course the goalies in my family, I could go on and on. Goalies rock!!! Some I didn't care for Dai Davies and Alex Stepney.
Dino Zoff Born: 28 February, 1942. Mariano del Friuli, Italy Teams Udinese (Italy) Mantova (Italy) Napoli (Italy) Juventus (Italy) Team Honours European Championship 1968 UEFA Cup 1977 World Cup 1982 Dino Zoff, one of the world's best goalkeepers, holds the world record for holding a clean sheet the longest time, 1142 minutes. From September 1972 to June 1974, he was unbeatable. He also holds the record for the oldest player, age 40, to win the World Cup. While with Juventus, Zoff won five league titles and in 1982, captained Italy to a World Cup win. Zoff became a coach for Lazio, after retiring, later becoming president of the club. In 1999 he was lured away to coach for the national team.
There have been too many great goalies to even begin to make an attempt at naming one as the best ever.
The Hall of Fame, every soccer history book and the Presidential Commission on Who Was the Best Goalkeeper all agree, it was Lev Yashin.
whatabout the south american gk's? to mention a few oscar cordoba chilavert fillol gatti maspowicks(sp) higuita
Jan Tomaszewski. Pele has said one of the toughest goalies he has had to face. And condor11. Please tell me you didn't just write Chilavert and Higuita. Those guys are HORRIBLE.
If you use the peer to peer network winmx(dl at winmx.com) I have hundreds of goals, saves, gaffes, WC highlights including the banks save of pele at the 1970 WC in Mexico. Look me up under Goatboy187
Having had the pleasure of witnessing Dasaev play, he's the best goal keeper of all time. Of course, this is a biased vote as I've never had a chance to admire the Black Spider.
Gordon Banks. Just because of the match with Jairzinho i think it was a long time ago. i am only 16 but i have seen reruns of it. great match by both players.
The late and great Lev Yashin is the best goalkeeper of all time, rivalled only by Gordon Banks. He nearly gave up football in favour of ice-hockey in 1953 after playing second-fiddle to Alexei 'Tiger' Khomich at Dynamo Moscow but eventually he gained a place in the first team and from then on never looked back. His fantastic performances earned him 75 caps for the Soviet Union winning the 1956 Olympic gold and the 1960 European championship as well as finishing third in the 1966 World Cup finals and winning the 1963 European player of the year award. He possessed agility, shot-stopping and anticipation absolutely unparalleled by any other goalkeeper and it is even claimed that he saved over 150 penalties during his career.
Yashin was known as the "Black Panther", not the "Black Spider". He is the #1 all time best in my book. As far as U.S. goalkeepers go, before Brad and Kasey, there was Winston DuBose, Arnold Mausser, Shep Messing, Bob Rigby, and Alan Mayer from the 1970s and Gene Olaf from way back when. Internationally, Gordon Banks was great. Personal favorites of mine are Hugo Orlando Gatti (Argentina), Ray Clemence (England), and Jim Leighton (Scotland).
fantaz, you should quote your source: http://www.plcane.clara.net/football/lev.htm NEKSoccer, you're right but he's known worldwide as "Black Spider": Moscow "Dinamo" traditionally had strong goalkeepers - Yashin replaced in "Dinamo"'s goal the famous Aleksei "the Tiger" Khomich, earning a handful of nicknames of his own. "The Lion" was the meaning of his given name for Russians, and for others he was known as "the Black Spider". http://www.quark.lu.se/~oxana/lev/ Known as "the Black Spider" or "the Black Panther", Lev Yashin's power to pounce and eye-popping range allow him to be considered by many as "the goalkeeper of the century." http://www.worldxi.com/lyashin.html Wearing his distinctive all black outfit, Yashin retired from international football the following season although he did make the trip to Mexico '70 as a reserve and aid to the younger players. Nicknamed the 'Black Panther', Yashin's prowess between the sticks took standards of goalkeeping to a new level. http://www.stoppagetime.com/slegends/lyashin/
