Ok guys, hometown loyalties aside, what's the best paper in the UK for football coverage? I constantly find my self reading completely contradictory articles in the papers, and want to know which ones are reliable.
No paper is reliable ... individual journo's are. For instance, David Maddock at the Mirror is a complete tit, but his colleague Oliver Holt is very good. Nothing to do with the paper. John Edwards at the Mail is garbage, but stablemate Steve Curry ain't too bad. Paul Wilson at the Guardian/Observer is excellent. Simon Kuiper and Guillame Bagauelle also. Ian Ridley, Simon Barnes, Brian Glanville and, in my opinion the king of them all, Henry Winter (Telegraph) are also very good.
I like the Guardian website---Learys column. And the minute-by-minutes...I am a newbie so what do I know? If there are better sites please tell me...
I read the sun most often. Metro's match reports don't make much sense if you've been to the match. The worst is the Mirror though. I wont touch that paper with a stick. I really hate that paper.
See Mr Bates at the end of the day..with that attitude he'll go out of his way to get you a job Telegraph man myself.On-line of course now-a-days
Agreed about Oliver Holt from the mirror. The only decent journalist at the the mirror who doesnt wear anti man united glasses all the time. Not a paper but the Observer Sport Monthly has some good articles in it. Best papers generally are the Obsever, Telegraph or Guardian. But if you like your rumours then you cant go wrong with the Sun
Found that most off em are pretentious middle class clowns who are only concerned with top teams, none of em ever know what they're talking about.
I have always enjoyed reading the Torygraph when it comes to footy... and I don't think there is a better footy columnist than Henry Winter.
Try to find a tabloid style magazine called British Soccer Week. It's published weekly here in Western Australia but imported into the UK. It has about thirty pages of match reports, news items and stats mainly on the Premier League but the Nationwide leagues, the Scottish leagues and European soccer have a couple of pages each. It is by far the most comprehensive coverage of British soccer I've ever come across (and I lived for many years in the UK).
if you want stuff that makes sense, broadsheets are the only way to go. i get myself all worked up reading the tabloids as they always blow things out of proportion or take sides unnecessarily (from my perspective, the worst of these are deifying alan shearer and moaning about how peter reid was sacked unfairly by sunderland). overall it's a very frustrating reading experience.
Mind you, not that they are immune - I recommend you read Paul Wilson's report of our match against Bolton on Saturday. More inaccuracies and lazy, sloppy mistakes (who's 'Didier Hamann'?) than you can shake a laptop at.
when i was living in london, i found that THE SUN was the best paper for all around info and rumours... also, the news portion is just as brilliant... im sure all of y'all know this already but i thought i would throw in my 2 cents~ cheers phishy
Fuck the S*n. I wouldn't wipe my arse with that filthy rag and I wouldn't piss on any of their journos if the whole semi-literate brylcreem-laden lot of them was on fire. In fact, I'd set the fuckers on fire. The fucking S*n .... get a clue, eh people?
according to the sun, bryan robson transformed middlesbrough into one of the premiership's sexiest sides. hmm, interesting slant there. no two ways about it, the only good thing about the sun is 'dear deidre'.
One thing will always remain true in the football world - Liverpool supporters will always hate The Sun. For good reason.
I really like the Telegraph sport pages, but don't often buy it because the rest of the paper is full of nazi fascist twats. Round 'em up!
The Non-League Paper has the largest number of games covered as far as I'm aware over here. Doesn't have any Scottish coverage, but does include Welsh leagues. Only misses out on three divisions in the English pyramid.
Nah. Even worse. They've infiltrated normal society and look like the person next to you on the tube. You can tell who they are when they say 'I'm not racist but....' etc.
