Not sure how far a lot of you go back, but from what you've seen and read, which German side would you consider the best ever? My pick is '72. Gunther Netzer was the key man back then.
Easy question. The 72 NT was one of the best teams in football-history with it´s brilliant offensive-play. They were tremendous.
I am not too familiar with the difference between the 1972 and 1974 team. My votes goes to one of the them.
Even though they didn't win, the '86 team was fantastic. Matthäus, Völler, Rummenigge, Schumacher, Brehme Coached by Franz Beckenbauer. They were a really good team.
I don't think they were a good team on paper. Rummenigge had a slight injury and was only half of his former self. Voeller was good, but had not yet bloosem. I would say the same thing on Brehme. All I remembered him was the freekick against France. Matthaeus was their best player, but he was limited to be good defensive midfield. His offensive skills did not develope until after Inter Milan. Hoeness played poorly as well. Littibarski also disappointed!!! Schumacher was great.... I had some memories on Magarth.... I really forgot.
A tie: The '74 WC winning side, with the Kaiser, Mueller, Hoeness, Brietner The '90 WC winning side, with Matthaus, Voeller, Brehme, Klinsmann all at the peak of their powers.
If I remember right, Denmark beat them pretty soundly in the group play. But by coming in second, they got a much easier path to France in the semi. Berthold was playing defense with an arm in a cast, he got ejected in the game against Mexico, one of the worst games in my memory.
Since I've never seen any games in which Netzer played, I'd have to go for the '74 team. People say that the '72 team was quite a juggernaut with Netzer, though.
Maybe I have a sentimental feeling that the '86 team was good because I lived in Germany from '84-'87, and learned to love the game when I was there. The 1986 World Cup was the first one I ever really paid much attention to. I cried along with all my German friends when they lost to Argentina in the final. I do think the 1990 team was really good. The players who first started to show their skills in '86 peaked in '90. They deservered to win that one. It's a shame the final was such a boring match.
Yes, Denmark beat them.... Germany then played Morocco in the round of 16 and then Mexico in the quarterfinal. Matthaeus scored from a long, long freekick to beat Morocco. I did not expect Germany to beat France in the semi-final. My favorite player back then was Rummenigge. I remembered being disappointed that he did not play well.
if i recall Rummenigge tore a hamstring or had a pulled groin just before the WC and was playing through alot of pain. He was also near the end of his career too. When healthy, he was the man for sure. He deserves to be mentioned in the same breath with the all time great strikers froim German and the world
I like the 1986er team too, it was stronger than the 1990 team. But the 1990 team learn to win. Even when they was the worst team. I saw the Worldcup in 1990 complete live in Italy, that was a run, I never forget.
