Manchester United: Buy Ballack or kiss the title goodbye

"With a year to run on his Bayern Munich contract, the German club may be severely tempted to cash in on their star man at this stage rather than let him have his pick of clubs for free next summer"

This season really is a make-or-break one for Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United.

Before Chelsea romped home with the league title last season, Fergie’s side hadn’t gone more than one season without the Premiership trophy in their grasp. Every time Arsenal and, once upon a time, Blackburn threatened to challenge their superiority, United bounced back the following season to regain the place they felt was rightfully theirs.

When Arsene Wenger swiped the crown from Ferguson’s head in 1998, Manchester United could easily have folded. But, instead, they bounced back in supreme fashion to clinch an unprecedented treble triumph.

But that was back then and this is now. Although Manchester United have won the league three further times since their exploits in Barcelona in 1999, they haven’t got close to the top spot for the last couple of seasons where, first, Arsenal and now Chelsea have raised the bar seemingly beyond the Old Trafford club.

That is why this season is a make-or-break one for United.

If they fail to make an impression at the business end of this coming Premiership season, then the chances are they won’t get back to being a title force for quite a number of years. Liverpool’s monopoly on the English game eventually came to an end, Ferguson needs to ensure that this is not the end of his era as ultimate domestic force.

But to do that he needs a new figurehead for his side. He needs someone confident enough to take matches in his hand and make things happen. He needs someone to replace the rapidly declining legs of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs as a creative midfield force. He needs the new Eric Cantona. He needs Michael Ballack.

The German should be United’s number one transfer target this summer. If they were to get him in before the start of the new season, then I would go as far as to say that it could be the final piece in the jigsaw. He is a Manchester United-type player. His cocky swagger coupled with superb skills, an eye for a pass and his fair share of goals would make a massive difference to United’s sometime-overrun midfield.

The club are in danger of losing any real leadership qualities, with Roy Keane coming towards the end of his career and few outstanding leaders remaining in the dressing room. They have Rio Ferdinand, the next skipper of the club, and Gary Neville but both are defensive players and United teams of the recent past have always relied more heavily on attacking men who provide a real presence such as Cantona or Mark Hughes.

It seems that too many United players become anonymous on the pitch at times these days and that can’t be healthy for their trophy aspirations. Giggs and Scholes still provide reminders of their undoubted class but they are fewer and farther between these days as more often than not they disappear from games for one reason or another.

Michael Ballack is a different proposition entirely. It is unlikely that you will watch a match in which he is involved and not know he is around. He gets stuck in, likes a tackle and a forward pass. He does the dirty work well and the glory side of things even better. He is a lynchpin, leader and creative force for any sides he has played for and would provide Alex Ferguson with another responsible, encouraging and influential figure to help the development of Rooney and Ronaldo in the Old Trafford changing room.

With a year to run on his Bayern Munich contract, the German club may be severely tempted to cash in on their star man at this stage rather than let him have his pick of clubs for free next summer after he has lit up the 2006 World Cup on home soil. For he will do just that.

Ballack is a star man and one Manchester United must sign this summer if they are to even come close to challenging the increasing London dominance of the Premiership title race.

    Interesting article indeed....

If any club got Ballack, I would want it to be Man Utd. He would certainly fit in their system and he would indeed be great for Rooney and Ronaldo.

Unfortunately, I think Ballack will leave next summer, this guy has left every team he's ever been on: Chemnitz, Kaiserslautern, Leverkusen(a team that came so close to winning a triple) and now probably Bayern. But I don't think that will crush the team, we just have too much talent. If Bayern want to have any chance of extending him, they better finish the deal before the winter break. Because if the negotiation gets dragged out till next summer, there will be a HUGE bidding war in the EPL from Manutd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool (along with Real Madrid) for Ballack (one of the best players in the world, in the prime of his career, with 0 transfer fee). Any one of these teams depending on how they do next season would offer a motherload of money that Bayern wouldn't be able to match, combined that with Ballack's obvious desire to play aboard, he will most certainly move on.

There is no way Bayern let him go on a free. He will either sign a new contract in the next two weeks, or he will leave in the next two weeks. The Bayern board won't let $20+ million go down the drain for one more season with Ballack.
