LOL, wouldn't be funny, and yet ironic if Andres Sebastian Soria Quintana wins it? I wouldn't be surprised if he actually wins it, with this corrupt AFC, and ************ format.

Holy crap. They actually included players outside of Middle East, Cyprus, and Central Asia. That hasn't happened in a couple of years.

However, wtf are we suddenly including foreign players??? A couple years ago Park and Naka weren't legit contenders ... now that Nekounam is at Osasuna I suppose the rules change.

So how exactly do we get to impact this little shindig then? "Donations" or something?

wtf are the criteria to make the list cause this is so bloody stupid. If you asked aussie fans for the Australian player of the year the winner would not be Nathan Burns. If you asked for Japanese player of the year, Mitsuo Ogasawara wouldn't come close. Surely Park Ji Sung would come before kim Do-heon. And surely Chong Tese is the best DPR korean this year.

This AFC player of the year thing has lost meaning in the last few years. The last winner of it that deserved it truly or even close would've been Ali Karimi in 2004. Since then, the winners are good but no where near the best in asia or even the best season or year in asia.

Seriously, I don't care about the awards any more.

In 2005, Park Ji-Sung should have won.
    In 2006, Shunsuke Nakamura
    In 2007, Younis Mahmoud

I think in 2005 no one can Just Stand next to Hamad. Park played in WCQ in 2005 but didn't perform well. While hamad was the best player in AFC Champions league, Played in the Club world cup "and scored a goal". Qualified to the World cup with the NT without any lose and Only 2 goals Scored at Saudi Arabia which really means no Asian player can Stand next to him at that time! (Even park who couldn't do anything aginst Hamad in the WCQ). and korea lost home and Away from KSA.

That's the kind of comment that epitomizes the entire list... not just for Australia. It's a joke.
But I think Soria is going to get it regardless.

If Soria wins it, it will be an ultimate disgrace giving it to a naturalized foreigner, especially when there are many more Asians far deserving of this.

I agree, but just look at the short list within the short list that article mentions.

Only 1 player has any description attached to their name in there. It's also the same player whose picture adorns the article. And out of that list... can you see anybody else getting it? (Keep in mind Ogasawara got injured for 6 months around the same time as this article)

Seems pretty obvious they're setting the stage for "best Asian footballer" to be from Uruguay. :(

so sad... this award is like a poor man's kudo. Not much meaning in it but it doesn't hurt to receive it.

Why isn't the AFC doing much to change this if they can do leaps and bounds with the newly established ACL? Where are the Japanese so called 'expertise' in this area?

I just realized...we're gonna be a laughing stock of the world if a non Asian wins the supposedly greatest accolade an Asian player can receive.

Ive heard stuff on other boards that if a player does not attend the ceremony then he will not win the award which might be part the reason why not many European based Asians can qualify for this as they are busy with club commitments

    @ scotch

lol looks like they pretty much went out of their way to give the Uruguayan every possible advantage possible.

That was true of the past 2 (I believe 2 ? maybe 3?) awards. However this year they did away with that.
Note that there are players with Euro clubs on that list. Just not the ones you'd expect.

Out of that list, Nekounam should take it, but seriously where is Tim Cahill? His exclusion is absurd.

    The Real List
    - Park (Manchester United and SK)
    - Cahill (Everton and Australia)
    - Nekonaum (Osasuna and Iran)
    - Kewell (Galatasaray and Australia)
    - Nakamura (Celtic and Japan)

The rest don't belong there. You could make a case for any of these top 5 players, but if one of them does not win, then the AFC Player of the Year award will for 4 years now be a Laughing Stock trophy (last real winner was Ali Karimi).

Next year, Shojaei will win it :D InshAllah :)

    Hi Sahand,
Yes, I agree w u. In my opinion, Cahill is always the best player. The second choice may be Park.
