Since JOB hasn't played since Ocotber its kinda hard to give it to him. As of RIGHT NOW, it would have to go to either Friedel or McBride. But that's becasue they are the only ones who are playing.

Alright, you got me there, but i didn't mean like THIS INSTANT, i meant like spring/summer 2003, i.e. the player that can bring the most to a team when healthy

JOB is my personal favorite player, and barring his achilles injury I'd side with him. However, Friedel is widely recognized as the best keeper in the Premier League, so I'll have to take him.

I'll say Brian McBride, since everyone in the EPL is drooling over him, and in an online poll i think like 76% people said everton should make an effort to keep him.

There is only one American right now considered in the top 10 in the world at his postition and higher by some rankings, and that's Brad Friedel.

    Choices

Over the past year Friedel but the man of the moment is McBride. It's great that there are enough US players making an impact at the world level that we can have a discussion.

Only because Michael Ricketts is playing crap ball would I say Freddy Adu is the best American player.

    Someone had to say it.

To answer this question, I think it is wise to break down the beautiful game into its component parts. Therefore with no further "Adu", here is my humble analysis and final opinion of America's
    "Best-of-the-best-of-the-best.....SIR!"

    1. Best PK stopper - Friedel
    2. Best shot stopper - Keller
    3. Best GK footwork - Friedel
    4. Best Shooter - Mathis
    5. Best Header - McBrittle
    6. Best Dribbler in traffic - Obrien
    7. Best Passer - Reyna
    8. Best Vision - Mathis
    9. Best 1v1 player - Donovan
    10. Best Positional Sense - Obrien
    11. Best Field Leader - we don't really have a Roy Keane style field leader.
    12. Best Bigsoccer Prayer Subject - Adu
    13. Best Target Man - McBrittle
    14. Best Target - Cobi Jones
    15. Best Whiner - Donovan
    16. Best "Ball Handler" - Obrien

    and the winner is.........
    JOHN OBRIEN!!!!!!

There are many other potential subjects that I left open such as best tackler, best hacker, best diver etc, etc.... I will leave these topics open to the Bigsoccer field. Feel free to contribute or rip the above list to shreads if you get the urge.

    I like this part:

'MAN OF THE MATCH - Brad Friedel. He is the best keeper in the Premiership by a distance and if Arsenal are looking for a ready made replacement for David Seaman, they should look no further. '

right now Brad is the man

If you look at the season there is no question Brad is kicking ass and taking names. I have to believe he is the player of the year in the EPL to this point.

From another website regarding his last game:
However, even the frustrated Chelsea fans were forced to acknowledge that Brad Friedel and David Dunn had stolen the show as Blackburn secured a hard-earned victory.

Friedel's superb reflexes, with a string of top-class saves, gave Blackburn the platform to seize the lead with five minutes left when substitute Dwight Yorke struck with a header.

You could take these sentences and change the opponents name and it would be true of almost any game this year. He is their franchise player.

    Honorable Mention:
Marcus Hahnemann at D1 Reading is carrying his team for promotion to the EPL. I think I read he has 16 shutouts this year.

McB is on a tear, but let's see if he has the staying power. I wish him luck and hope he stays at Everton.

Keller is also having a hell of a year.

Eddie Lewis is also having a strong year and deserves another shot in the EPL.

Guys like that come along once in a generation. I think players like Keane are more important than having a top level striker, they have that fire to win at all costs, even if it gets the better of them at times.

Unless we are very lucky I don't think we'll get a Roy Keane for a long long time. In my eyes he is one of the best ever. Say if you were starting a club and could pick 11 players from all time, he might not be the first but he would certainly be near the top since he has a lot of skill and is probably the best captain in the world today.

Brad Friedel is the best American player right now without a single question. If everyone were healthy the order would be Reyna, Friedel, O'Brien.

McBride scoring goals for Everton is great and all but let the man stay healthy for a decent amount of time. He's the hottest (pause) field player right now, that much I'll give him.

    Friedel. Period. End of report.

Even if everyone was healthy, it would still be Friedel.

Bake's had a good month in England...Brad's had a great year.

Nice breakdown. I think I agree with everything except Mathis' vision.
