Bravo, Silvio! I just love that guy!

Bush Is Just 'Normal Guy with Feelings' -Berlusconi

ROME (Reuters) - President Bush is often misunderstood by those who do not know him personally and are unaware of his sensitive side, Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said in a television interview on Sunday.

"He's a normal man, absolutely open to everyone's feelings. He's a family man, a husband, a father of two children who he loves very much. He's someone absolutely like us," Berlusconi, who revels in the role as Bush's closest European ally behind British prime minister Tony Blair, told RAI3's Telecamere.

"He has very deep feelings, especially for the U.S. victims (in Iraq) ... his pain is deep."

Ahead of Bush's visit to Italy next Friday, which some opponents of the Iraq war have vowed to disrupt, Berlusconi defended U.S. pre-emptive military action in the Middle East.

"The West isn't the aggressor, we must always remember this," Berlusconi said in an interview recorded on Saturday, before the hostage drama in Saudi Arabia in which an Italian cook was killed.

"On the contrary, we are defending ourselves and trying to root out terrorists from their hideouts. That's what happened in Afghanistan and that is what Bush has said is the case in Iraq."

    maybe he meant "feelers"?

you may as well take all the milk ian, because you certainly take the cake - if this is your idea of a glowing endorsement...

This is the key sentence out of all that fluff. Even from somebody who apparently "revels" in his role as third Euro stooge from the right, he won't say that the reasons for being in Iraq are just. He'll say that Bush says so, but won't say that he feels that way himself (as he did referencing Afghanistan). Afghanistan is fact. Iraq is based on Bush's word.

You gotta love that these statements of support and praise are coming for a man who would, if not for his diplomatic immunity, be on trial right now for financial fraud and a few other things to boot. Before anyone demands proof, here you go: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/1779724.stm

I'd be better off having ex-convicts as my references on a résumé than Silvio Berlusconi. Oh, and the bastard bought something like 5 scudetti, if Roma, Lazio, Juve and Inter fans are to be believed.

He's of somewhat dubious character but he's sure no Clinton.

    Sincerely,

Thanks for the non sequitur, but no one is talking about Clinton here, so I see no need to compare him to anyone. But while you're at it, why don't you swing by the DC United forum and talk about how Adu is certainly no Johan Cruyff, and probably not even Garrincha, either.

Bravo Silvio, go where you deserve to go (jail).

I guess you love him because you haven't the misfortune to have him as a PM.

That's the problem. Normal guys are not supposed to be president. They will screw up big time as we have seen so far since 2000.

    Bush is a "normal guy"?

Exactly which part of "born into money, attended exclusive prep schools as a youth, got into Yale because of his pops, avoided Vietnam because of his pops, stumbled aimlessly about as an adult, etc." is normal?

One of Bush's many problems is that he's got no clue what normal guys are like, unless your definition of "normal" is "the life of a scion of a privileged New England family."

"Normal" compared to Silvio, maybe? The Economist had a two page graphic outlining all his fraudulent activities, must have been about 2 years ago. Makes Bush look like a boy scout.

When it comes to "normal guys" who have been president, no one with the surname "Bush" should even be considered.

    Clinton? Yes.
    Reagan? Yes.
    Carter? Yes.
Nixon? I'm not sure. I'm not that familiar with his background.
    LBJ? Yes.
    Kennedy? Hell no.
    Eisenhower? Yes.
    Truman? Yes.

Before someone says it, yes, I know that John Kerry is also the scion of a privileged New England family.

But then, I don't consider being a "normal guy" to be a good reason to vote for a guy for political office. It doesn't make a damn bit of difference to me.

Hehehehe. This is just like the time Bush looked into Putin's eyes and declared he had a good soul and he loved his children. Nevermind that he's a former KGB agent.

This normal guy stuff is such a load of crap. Populist politics have taken over in this country and the office of president has never been so degraded as in the last 50 years. Once upon a time, American presidents were educated, literate men who one could look up to and think "it's nice to see a guy smarter than me in a position of such importance." Nowadays, the more a politician is akin to a white trash average joe, the better liked he is.

Kissing babies, attending Nascar races, throwing out first pitches, shaking hands with low-brow morons who vote based on what their pastor tells them anyway, movie careers prior to presidency, beer-promoting younger brothers, monolingualism, speeches being written by others and many, many other things have made the office a running joke. Thomas Jefferson was an author, philospoher, political theorist and even an architect. Wilson had a Ph.D. and was a professor at Princeton, of all places. FDR was published in economics journals and even Hoover was an excellent engineer. What the hell happened to this? Presidents in the last few decades have ranged from slightly-above average joes to bumbling idiots. Either way, most of them were complete pawns of the larger party, no doubt due in part to this lack of intellect.

Bush is a normal guy, and that's the problem. He's too much like the average person and we're not supposed to be ruled by average people. Hell, that's why we elect people to do these jobs for us, on the assumption that they'd do it better than you or me. I fail to see how W's grasp of economy or world affaird exceeds that of the most average of Americans.

This might seem like a cheap shot at first, but it really is true.
From the "Why Bush is stupid" piece on Slate: http://slate.msn.com//id/2100064/
Basically, to straighten out his life, he became a hard core born-again. He chooses not to think, because thinking allows doubts to creep in, and he requires complete and unwavering faith in religion.
Now, this might help him battle his addictions, and it might even make him a great politician (which is different from statesman, mind you) but there's absolutely nothing "normal" about shutting off your capacity for independent thought.

He's a simple, unspectacular man, but he is neither a common man nor a normal man.

He's NOTHING like the average person. The Walker and Bush families are among the richest families in the country.

    1. No, unfortunately it is not a doctored photo. He did it, you are an italian citizen who doesn't seem to follow italian news.

I know it could look like a faked photo but...

Source: La Repubblica (I am sure that given you're an italian citizen you certainly know that La Repubblica is the major italian newspaper alongside with Corriere della Sera)

2- Do you really voted for "forza italia" those shameless who call themselves "azzurri"? This carpetseller-like trick to mix soccer and politics is telling of the person.

We will see the results of the coming EU elections. ;)
