Supposedly the results of the investigation are coming this week. At least according to Hercules Gomez who said so on his show Futbol Americas. Didn’t have any insight as to the results though.
I hope it’s not too much of a bloodbath. The Reynas have all the earmarks of a family that never fully dealt with an tragedy, and so channel their pain into other things. Gio’s periodic rage on the pitch, the parents’ inability to handle his treatment by coaches — all of it has a kind of tragic “Gio’s success will make the bad feelings go away” vibe to it. I know the Internet exists mostly for porn and schadenfreude, but to me it’s all kind of sad.
Making the participants in this drama read this thread from start to finish would be punishment enough.
Still no word on the investigation results but USSF does have their annual meeting next week. One last thing: U.S. Soccer AGM is next week (Thursday-Saturday in San Diego). Federation has virtual budget Q&A (used to be held in-person at AGM) on Tuesday but no link. It's not a screw up.Its designed this way ever since corporates and suburbanites wrested control from the old immigrant clubs.
Investigation results are now public U.S. Soccer Statement Regarding Completion of Alston & Bird Investigation Concerning Gregg Berhalter » https://t.co/3S63yuOXeP pic.twitter.com/pbPXkOy4yy— U.S. Soccer (@ussoccer) March 13, 2023
Gregg Berhalter remains in contention for USMNT job despite investigation confirming he did kick wife The investigation also showed that former U.S. World Cup captain Claudio Reyna had a “pattern or periodic outreach” to U.S. Soccer officials over a six-year period from 2016 through the end of 2022 in regards to “U.S. Soccer’s treatment of his children, including primarily his son, USMNT player Gio Reyna.” That outreach included complaints about refereeing in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, travel accommodations and Reyna’s role at the World Cup. The investigation also indicated that both Claudio and Danielle Reyna, Gio Reyna’s mother, made vague suggestions to U.S. Soccer employees at the 2022 World Cup, “suggesting they knew damaging information about Mr. Berhalter that U.S. Soccer officials did not know.” https://theathletic.com/4304253/2023/03/13/gregg-berhalter-reyna-usmnt/
In the end I kind of feel for Gio. He's a 20 yr old kid and much of this was when he was even younger. If the contact started in 2016 then he was 14 yrs old. Also, unless they have made public the communications it could have been anything from "looking forward to seeing Gio make his way through the US youth system" all the way to "you better be playing my son". hard to say and it's why I wont pass judgment on anyone except for two things: 1. Gregg shouldn't have said what he did at the leadership conference 2. The Reynas shouldn't have put out the information about Gregg and his wife 25 yrs later or whenever it was. they are all adults and both of the above were wrong.
I shouldn't liveblog my reading of the report, but "a pattern of periodic outreach by Mr. Reyna to US Soccer officials and staff" is just a masterpiece of a phrase, I think we're all going to enjoy this greatly
Yes, but Gregg had some reasonable expectation that his statements would remain somewhat private, though that probably was a bit naïve on his part. The Reynas were out for blood, to wreck someone's career over their feefees about their babyboybird. Someone, and his wife, who had been their "best friends", for the better part of 3 decades. They are shameless, and shameful, and from here on out, McBride is my past Captain America. Claudio who?
Reyna and his wife embody the "crazy teenage sports parents" stereotype that exists in North America. They look like absolute buffoons.
Well the very first observation is as follows: "As background, Investigation witnesses described a pattern of periodic outreach by Mr. Reyna to U.S. Soccer officials and staff from in or around 2016 through the end of 2022, the purpose of which was to convey certain complaints and comments about U.S. Soccer’s treatment of his children, including primarily his son, USMNT player Gio Reyna. Witnesses reported that Mr. Reyna’s past actions involved attempts to influence decisions by U.S. Soccer officials and staff concerning his children on issues ranging from travel arrangements to the impact of on-pitch refereeing decisions." US Soccer really should have put their foot down on the Reynas.
