This isn't the most accurate source -- Maradona won the WC for Argentina in 1986, not 1978 -- but stil... https://web.archive.org/web/2023061...dona-scaloni-is-no-good-as-argentina-manager/
Didn’t he he have the best winning record of a US coach in his first stint? (60%) It’s a tough crowd when passing grade is by far the nicest thing anyone can say when he whipped Mexico multiple times, qualified for the World Cup and took the team to the second round with our youngest squad ever. We really eat our own.
Some of those guys are currently employed. I have no idea where in the heck they came up with this list of candidates.
Here is the official announcement: Gregg Berhalter has been relieved of his duties, effective immediately » https://t.co/sHi1ss2QDe pic.twitter.com/pkHAiCRGnP— U.S. Soccer Men's National Team (@USMNT) July 10, 2024
lol... the mayor of hannover is *not* unqualified. That said, I would be reasonably happy with a Nancy hire. I don't know much about Matarazzo, who's the only other name on the list I assume we have a reasonable shot at. First person to suggest the special one gets their back put against the wall.
It's challenging to compare winning percentages ever since UEFA corrupted international match scheduling for non-UEFA national teams by establishing its Nations League.
I think given that the next WC is in the US will make this a very attractive job for a large pool of candidates ... here is what the next coach should consider: 1. a 24 month rental home in Ranchos Palos Verdes (base in LA). 2. willingness to fly from LAX to ORD and various spots in the US etc. (first class) - and ability to fly from LAX to London/Frankfurt/Munich/Berlin/Milan/Netherlands/Monaco etc. 3. majority of training at training camp in LA. 4. negotiation for NIL rights and advertising in the US. 5. guaranteed good base salary till after the WC2026 final ... with a nice pay for performance bonus structure.
Henry would be a horrible hire, and Bielsa is in charge of one of the most dynamic teams in the world, currently. So if Henry's a yes that's bad, and I don't think Bielsa would be. Would love to be wrong, think Bielsa for 2 years is about the absolute best the USSF could hope for. That is a better hire than Klopp IMO.
I imagine it feels like marrying a “ten” when you’re 25, divorcing her at 32, and looking for new prodpects, but ultimately settling for a “3” because she’s “nice” and getting “paid” is always better than the alternative.
Of all the plausible names, Bielsa is the only one I would be legitimately excited about. I wouldn't grouch too much with Henry either. He wasn't terrible at Montreal.
We played a lot of hot Concacaf garbage that we ordinarily wouldn't because of Nations League and an expanded Gold Cup. This is also the worst Mexican team I've ever seen. It was surface-level good, but not as impressive when you dive into it. Passing grade for the first Berhalter administration feels right to me, but it certainly fell short of Berhalter's goal of changing the way the world perceives American soccer.
I don't 4eally have anything bad to say. He worked hard and met expectations through 2022. That might sound like faint praise, but it didn't have to turn out that well. Coming back was probably a bad idea for all involved. But I get it, from his perspective.
People call Dolo unqualified yet there was a segment of the fanbase that called for BJ Callaghan to take the job despite being even less qualified than Dolo. Also, I've seen people suggest the special one....then I remind them he just took a job with Fenerbache.
Goal Differential in MLS as head coach. Jim Curtin: +89 Steve Cherundolo: +62 Wilfried Nancy: +59 Jesse Marsch: +54 Pat Noonan: +47 Gregg Berhalter: +9
Do I think either are likely? No. Do I think your assumption that no one on that list would even consider the job is accurate? Also no.
perhaps they could just call up Clint and have him do his dark arts training course. if I am Klopp or Bielsa - there is absolutely no purpose for the US to play games between now and 2026 against any CONCACAAF teams other than Mexico, Canada, and perhaps Costa Rico/Panama. Playing anyone else is a waste of time and could in fact see our players get injured. The boys need to go on the road to South America and Europe for game after game after game. What does not kill you makes you stronger.
Fair - but also a very young team and he did well recruiting quality duals. He also had us playing better at (fairly few) times than I’ve seen us play. I give him some credit for not being a bunker and counter coach in the name of grinding results.
