From what I've heard, a big reason for using hiring consultants is DEI, to preempt accusations of discriminatory hiring. What better way to show you're not just considering candidates from the old boys' network? Then, of course, you hire whomever you want. You already proved it was an exhaustive search!
This was always the highly likely result, after such an on-field embarrassment. That is the precedent, outside Klinsmann. But people fear the unknown & worst possible outcome, even if unlikely. We had never experienced an on-field embarrassment with Berhalter. He always managed to avoid them by doing the right thing last second (Honduras) or pure luck (Jamaica). If getting ousted from a dress rehearsal for the 2nd biggest tournament in your history, wasn't somehow enough, USSF could reflect back on the luck immediately previous to see a clear pattern. So I'm slightly relieved, but this was fully expected. Now, whoever we hire will be better since the players will have to impress a manager. It's much more about jimmys & joes than x's & o's. Most of x's & o's are if jimmys & joes are fit to execute them. Give a college try at Klopps before likely falling back on the best domestic option. I'm a Nancy boy.
I wonder if going in Gregg had any idea that getting grouped would get him fired. Judging by all the focus using this as part of the “process” and “preparation” for 2026…I suspect he thought his job was way safer than it was. Hell…I suspect everyone in US soccer thought the same.
It is still just rumor but it is a rumor that I hope is true. Until it gets confirmed by an official source it is just rumor.
It's the ultimate ass covering exercise. Can a good hire come of it? Sure, but it also tends to produce "safe" choices that groupthink tends to lean towards in them.
Yea, exactly. Media literacy not exactly high around most the Internet. When the mouthpiece gets the scoop, it's almost always legit, that's why they have the access.
Goodbye, Gregg. I’ll never forget the good times, the regional titles and sneakers, the MLS quota that didn’t require any MLS minutes, the top guys punching heads and punting balls.
Even if that were true, new is in all likelihood still more important. 1st cycle Klinsmann & Berhalter were far more competent than their 2nd cycle versions.
But my impression is that it's fairly likely they just proceed in the direction they'd go in without the firm, only with the ass covering . I have heard of a firm influencing a coaching hire from time to time, but it seems like that's not the most common outcome. To be fair it's not like most hiring decisions are publicly revealed to be an idea that originated with the search firm or not.
Given he's been completely hapless against European teams as both a club coach and a national team coach, why on earth would a Euro team hire him? He has proved himself capable of regularly beating mediocre Mexican teams, though, so maybe he can go south of the border.
Oddly, I always chuckle when I walk past the corner on Broadway where Gregg was filmed jogging in Nashville. Absolutely every time. Not in a sarcastic way, either. It’s interesting to me that such an accomplished dude was doing something exactly where and how I would do it. I’m sure he’ll do just fine and be in pretty high demand.
By who? Relative to what? He'll be lucky to get a top league job anywhere in the world. Just like prior to becoming USMNT coach.
FWIW, the AP (Ronald Blum) is reporting this too: https://apnews.com/article/berhalter-us-coach-0acbc8fe05053f8dd00149490f8cda70
