Ehhh, it's still at least 60% a bull---- excuse. We had a 1-0 lead with less than 70 minutes left to kill with him off the field on that red. What they did the rest of the match and the absolutely nothing they did against Uruguay in a game Uruguay didn't need and didn't have their coach for is probably a good 60% why we crashed out. A good team doesn't surrender that lead, and then the game entirely to freaking Panama. A good team actually tries to win in the win or go home match. We didn't do either. Weah's a part of the story, yes we almost certainly advance without the red, but we also almost certainly should have advanced with a lead against Panama and a touch more than an hour left to play. That, in essence, is why he had to be fired. If we are playing for our lives, and totally fail, spectacularly in two game model's that are not all that different from a knockout match do or die scenario two years from now, why on earth would you keep him? The Knockouts of '26 are going to be murderously difficult. If we can't figure out Panama up 1-0, or even put Uruguay under pressure in a do or die game, then Berhalter had to go period, regardless of what Weah did.
Because everything in that thread is about the next coach after Berhalter. It’d be a major lack of continuity.
Well, maybe that will help them not commit dumbass reds. If nothing else, this can be some kind of wake up call. It's the 37th time, but maybe that's the charm.
Although I've never felt that his style was a good fit for our program, I've always respected Berhalter's hard work and genuine dedication to the job. Hope we get that in the next guy as well. Good luck to Gregg in his future endeavors and thanks for the good times coach - yes, even the most cynical of us should be able to admit that there were some. I selfishly hope he continues contributing to US Soccer at the MLS club level. I think he could be a pretty good developer of talent for our national team and league in that capacity.
Nothing says I have no idea what I'm doing like hiring a hiring committee. It's the ultimate "we tried everything" cop out, when in reality you tried nothing and passed the buck to the consultant firm.
I really hope this doesn't take 6 months to find a replacement. No reason we shouldn't have our new coach for those September games. I was never a "bald fraud" guy. I give him a passing grade for his first cycle, but it's just been an ugly year since he's come back. It sucks to have your job ruined by a stupid red card, but a change needed to happen. I also hope the discourse around US Soccer Internet will be nicer for the next 2 years though I fear if we go The Dolo route it won't take long for it to become as nasty as before.
They also plan to have a coach in place by the start of the September window reportedly so perhaps there was some back channeling over the last few days.
lol Basically I’m gonna dismiss everyone who said there was no chance GB would get fired. When someone is THAT wrong, why listen? once I see the news some place better than twitter, I’m gonna change my sig
I think I’d look at the list McIntyre put out last week. He’s clearly very plugged at USSF. That’s probably close to the starting point in terms of candidates.
The Copa America is an unambiguous disappointment, but Berhalter has successfully led the US national team back to the World Cup and to trophies in 3 CONCACAF competitions. I would see no harm in keeping him in the background down the road for an emergency as needed. But it's clear, and was clear by the end of 2022, that there were also limits to his current approach, and that the team perhaps needs a fresh voice in the locker room. So I wish Berhalter the best of luck going forward.
That is not what i said. I said that a posting, any posting, on social media is unreliable and I do not think Fox soccer is really reliable either. Antisocial media is not a good place for accurate news no matter who is "supposed" to be the poster.
He did the job that was needed last cycle. I can't fault him for US Soccer making a poor decision to bring him back for a 2nd. Kick him upstairs, make him some sort of recruiter or figurehead, but find a better coach.
I would guess those two plus Nancy and Southgate are the primary candidates (if Southgate leaves England).
Well he’ll get paid out for the next two years. And it’s not as if MLS coaching jobs don’t pay well (though maybe not as high as the USMNT job).
I’M not being a dick here…what is your experience with high level jobs with big organizations? Cuz I saw this in a similarly sized org. Seems routine for this kind of job, ESPECIALLY when it’s literally a worldwide pool out there. Im hoping for a higher level of posting here. It’s the hope that kills you.
Not if the source is "X"/Twitter. It is, as of now, just an unconfirmed speculation. Even US Soccer's actuall web page says nada about it. At least yet. I hope it is true but it is jus rumor right now.
Okay, here’s a news article. https://www.foxsports.com/stories/s...coach-following-copa-america-group-stage-exit You’ll notice US Soccer chose not to comment. They didn’t deny it.
