This is written by an actual soccer fan. some of the mainstream reviews I've seen for it contain the obligatory jab at soccer, so this was a nice change. www.onthesidelines.org
Here is a non-sport related entity's review: Entertainment Weekly. They gave it an A. www.ew.com/ew/article/review/movie/0,6115,431940~1~~benditlikebeckham,00.html
Does anyone know when or if this movie will be released Nationwide, beyond its present "limited release"?
kazza.com i downloaded it from there a few weeks ago. great movie. will go see it when it comes out here.
You can also purchase it on DVD from amazon.co.uk -- but in order to play it in the US you'll need a region-free DVD player and either a PAL-NTSC converter or a TV that can display PAL directly.
If you go to the movie's official website, (perhaps someone could post the link?) there will be an option for you to find a theatre. It will list, each release date and where it'll be released. For example, it's been released in a few theatres in LA but won't come out in my home town til April 11th. It won't go "nationwide" all at once. It'll gradually grow.
I bought the movie a lil' over a month ago and absolutely loved it. Gawd I'm sounding like a broken record on this topic. I've also let other friends of mine see it and they loved it as well. It's great that most teams are doing some type of promo with the movie.
If the movie is half as good as the reviews, it's a great movie. thread moved from WUSA to FCM, where it will be on topic
At the 'Rotten Tomatoes' site, they have links to all sorts of reviews of the movie, 82% of which are currently positive: And they also have an interview with the director: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/news-20488/ Of course, the best experience would be with a bunch (or a theater full of) women's soccer fans!
Or with some of the players? Also Washington Post article about the movie (actually as much about Beckham himself as anything)
Here's the MLS review: By The Clean Sheet editor: Tino Palace http://www.mlsnet.com/content/03/tcs0327.html
From today's Washington Times: New film gives fans a big kick Also in the same article...earthing shattering news on Mia -- Don't us DirecTV chodes get a BBC channel???
More reviews Watch for the movie, "Bend It Like Beckham" and then see it with your kids. There aren't many soccer movies yet and not enough movies that give girls a chance to dump the "Barbie/Bare-Midriff Rock Star" image. This is a fun movie for the whole family. Don't miss this one. ---Mary Boyer The Rapid City Journal http://www.rapidcityjournal.com/articles/2003/04/24/sports/local/news04.txt
I saw it. I downloaded to my computer a couple of months ago. I plan on seeing it the theater just so I can feel justified for downloading it. I really liked it. The soccer wasn't too bad. I mean, I've seen Lady Bugs and the big green and that was painful to watch. The girls in Bend it had some skills. (Although I found the captain of Jess's team to be underpar in comparison to the other teammates. She's from All Saints or some pop group like that so that might explain her presence on the pitch) The story itself is great. I think many of the review underplay the fact that the main character's parents want her to go to college. All the reviews sound like Jess is alive merely to be a wife, but her parents really encourage her to go to college (in england, of course) and all that. The father of the Jules reminded me of my dad. He really didn't care about women's sports (he wasn't against them, just didn't care) till his daugthers got really into sports. I feel that is a common situation.
My wife and I saw it Saturday. Granted, it could be entitled "My Sister's Big Fat Sikh Wedding" -- but then again, I ove those clash of cultures movies because it reminds me of my reaction when I went away to college. The movie really is not a "soccer" movie -- it is not Victory. But soccer is the means for young Jess to combine her yearings to break free with her desire to love and respect her parents.
