Charlie Davies said a couple days ago he doesn't know why he isn't playing more. He scored a hat trick against Chivas and then disappeared. I really couldn't think of a reason to explain it either until it hit me.

    Ben Olsen is a genius.

Imagine, Sochaux is thinking 'something must be up with this Davies kid. He's probably not ready yet.' Olsen gets Davies on loan for another year, a full one at 100%, with Chris Pontius healthy and De Ro in there as well.

A full year with Davies, De Ro, and Pontius would seem to guarantee a playoff appearance.

You think Olsen possibly sacrificed a playoff appearance this year for a full year with this trio next year? That he's not playing Davies so he can get one more year out of him?

This could become one of those 'epic' threads once DC fans get a wind of it.

davies is a either on or he's a stick in the mud. he cant create his own chances, and he raises the estrogen level on the field every time hes on it which throws everybody off.
imho i wouldnt keep him unless he stays for the same price as he arrived.

Or he doesn't think Davies has a future in DC and didn't feel the need to throw him out there.

Or he didn't think he was the best option at forward to get the team qualified for the playoffs.

Or he just isn't really that good of a coach, and got propped up by an amazing run by DeRo.

If that is honestly the plan we will miss the playoffs in 2012 by one point because Hamid will be out half the year with injury and Najar transfers in the Summer. Least we won't be in Baltimore...

Yeah, MLS is going to want to pay a guy who's suing one of their investors and who didn't play particularly well in the back half of the season, to the point that he couldn't even get off the bench? I don't think so...

It's not an uncommon practice to remove a player - on loan - that isn't having an epic year come seasons end. Like you said, it probably leaves Sochaux to believe he isn't cutting it and thus they can't ask a higher price.

The truth of it, though, is that DC was not in a position to be picky/stingy about who they play. If Davies was on a team like Seattle or LA, you might have a legitimate case, but DC was playing for their playoff lives. If Olsen is seriously benching a guy so he can get him cheaper next year it's a retarded move. One that, in all reality, could get him fired. (won't happen, just saying)

Truth is: Davies wasn't the right guy for the spot. Olsen is VERY green as a coach and learning on the spot. Most importantly, though, is that DC had a hot foot(?) in DeRo. Davies did nothing, outside finish wonderful through balls from Pontius, to deserve playing time

Interesting theory, but no. Davies has just not delivered consistently at all. I'd say it's really 50/50 at this point whether we are going to keep him around for 2012.

What convoluted thinking, this is like the MLS equivalent of a "9/11 Truther" thread...

    Ever heard of Occam's Razor?

I'll go with the middle option.

I dunno. Nowak has done nearly the same thing with Philly and it has worked fairly well. Philly though has experience down the spine of the team while DC really didn't (partly because Jakovic went down and Boskovic was out most of the year). They have gotten decent production out of the kids so a few smart veteran players added could really help. That is just my opinion though.

To be honest, had DC not lost Boskovic and more importantly Pontious they'd likely would have made the playoffs.

Pontius is one thing because he admittedly went in on a stupid tackle and - not that he deserved it or anything - but kind of did it to himself. Really a shame when he was on such a tear but it is what it is.

Boskovic, on the other hand, is something to be really bitter about because he was hacked down in a USOC game after scoring two goals by some rookie NE defender who has never stepped foot on an MLS pitch and likely never will.

I mean seriously, even for a conspiracy theory this one makes very little sense. Why in the world would a coach purposely sabotage his team, just to keep the same lineup for another year? He's going to risk his job so that he can get into the playoffs a year from now, instead of just going for it this year? What???

I like that Benny has a sense of humor off the pitch, yet mercilessly raped your ********ing skulls for over a decade when he was on it.

    That's it.

Pontius got injured. Google "Pontius Injury" and you'll get:

"Sep 11, 2011 – Two minutes after registering his third assist, all on goals by Davies during the 3-0 victory over Chivas USA, Pontius was injured on a sliding" from the Wash post.

After that no one was serving sweet passes to Davies. The Pontius injury pretty much lowered DCU's playoff chances.
