I have a question. The Metrostars used to have a stat where when Mathis scored, they always won. Didn't DC have something similar with Ben Olsen? If they did, that streak ended two weeks ago, when they lost their road game at Metrostars. Does anyone remember that stat, or am I confusing Olsen with somebody else?
Yes, they remembered it. Thanks to some missed foul calls and serious goal keeping errors, DC can no longer say that they are unbeaten and untied when Olsen scores. They are now 18-1-0, still not very bad.
stats like this and mathis just really amaze me. i think there are some players out there that show up some games and are invisible in others but a player like benny who seems to give his all every game how come our record is so good when he scores. not to knock either of these players but it seems like such a fluke stat it really amazes me that there is such a difference when benny scores compared to a moreno or cerritos.
The difference is that they're supposed to be finishers. If Ben scores (as a midfielder), it almost always means their defence is in disarray cos the forwards are giving them hell. So no surprise on the statistic.
We are 0-1 this season in games when Ben Olsen scores a goal. I hope he does not score this weekend or we could be in trouble.
im not sure i buy that argument. does everytime a midfield player score his team wins? sure most forwards score the majority of goals by middies score them too. i doubt teams are undefeated or close to it everytime a midfielder scores.
So, that clears it up then. Maybe the Ben scores, DC wins stat explains the bad second half play. They just assumed they would win. :-(
sports statistics generally annoy me as a rule, but stats like this in soccer are just silly. i was watching on the tube at some point this year and the stat they referenced was something about how DC wins so much more when they score first.... this is soccer -- the fact that your team scores at all probably gives you a 70% chance of winning.
Maybe it's a more relevant statistic if you look at it as Ben scores some very timely goals. A good number ( I haven't looked it up) of those goals are game winners, or game tying goals. The statistic shows that Ben is a clutch player. If it were a real damned stat, you'd see Nellie picking up Ben on every corner and heaving his body at the ball in an attempt to score/win.
Nellie is a Kiwi, maybe some Rugby formation from a Line-out would help. Possibly hoisting Olsen wouldn't be a bad idea, but my Rugby knowledge is atrocious anyway.
