DC United players will be scooping it up for charity on Tuesday, April 29 at the Ben & Jerry's at the Post Office Pavilion (1100 Pennsylvania Ave., NW) from 12:30 pm-8 pm. This is part of B & J's annual Free Cone Day. Cones are free but any tips you want to give will go to United for DC. Along with the players there should be some of the games from the soccer celebration. K
Highly recommend the "One Sweet Whirled" flavor inspired by the Dave Matthews Band if you haven't tried it already.
Personally, I"m a Chubby Hubby and Pfish Food man myself. And you've gotta do the tour of the Factory in Vermont--lots of fun!
As an aside, Ben and Jerry's factory in VT is one of, if not the biggest polluter in the State. So, enjoy your Ice Cream, think of all the cow poo that took to make it and all the bugs that live on it! Tim
Well, without going to far off-topic, I"d need to see more details on this. For starters, there are several B&J factories in Vermont (as well as elsewhere--if I recall the tour data, they also have one in Canada). Are you saying the factory itself pollutes? Or that b/c they use milk/cream, that the product is the result of a process (dairy cattle) that pollute? B/c I think there's a big difference there. Vermont prides itself on it's dairy cattle--that's a big industry in Vermont before there was ever a B&J and would continue to be if B&J ever stopped to exist. B&J also uses milk/cream from cattle that don't get BGH or steroid injections. Cattle, by themselves (unless you're deforresting the rain forrest--not a problem in Vermont), don't have to be polluting. In fact, animal manure (depending upon what the cattle are fed) is typically a pretty good fertilizer. And the bugs on the dung--that's not pollution either. My understanding is that B&J have a pretty environmentally friendly production operation.
While it would be against my political convictions to participate in any event that B & J's is a part of, I may have to stop by and throw a tip in the cup for United.
Just finished my free ice cream. There are not any players there yet. Catherine M. is the only one I recognized.
Bobby In The Driver's Seat Bobby and Devin showed up around 2:40; Bobby was extremely genial w/ the Ben and Jerry's people and the folks in line. I think Landon's been teaching him how to work it.
I think DC should copy the promo the Crew have done here very succesfully... They sell Greaters Ice Cream (a local co.) at Crew Stadium and local outlets and they also created a flavor, Crew Crunch, it's gold and black... DC could get together with the local franchiser of Ben & Jerry's and create "Yummy United" or something of that sort, think Cherry - Chocolate chip so the colors are right... of course I hope they give the flavor a better name than my idea...
Aaronstol--definitely worth some further thought. It could be Black and Red, or Black and White. The advantage of a name like "united" is that any combination of ice cream incredients works.
I've got an ice cream maker and was trying to think up a United-related flavor today while at Ben & Jerry's. The closest I got was MetroStars Crunch, which is vanilla with crushed-up bits of all day suckers. Warren and Esky were there between 5:30 & 7:00. Convey was still there because, according to Catherine, he was having such a great time (it must've been the multitude of teenage girls that were part of tour groups). Then Ali (ever the late sub), Ben and his very cute girlfriend came by to finish off the last hour.
Way off topic, but I've visited Vermont and there is a large, aromatic structure right off the highway which is labelled "Manure Bank" (this is just north of the giant gorilla holding up a Volkswagon in his hand). Don't know why, but I've never been tempted to go to the drive through teller and make a withdrawal... No opinion on B&J's because I'm VERY INTOLERANT of lactose. I'm all in favor of BJs, though.
You could've gotten one of their excellent dairy-free sorbets: Berry Berry Extraordinary, Mango Lime, and Ryan Nelsen's favorite, Strawberry Kiwi.
