The game started off with David Seaman being captain with Vieira being suspended, and a few early chances from HENRY going amiss, including a penalty striking the post and coming back into play after Ljunberg was fouled in the box. The thoughts of the record being broken of 44 consecutive games of scoring began to come to doubt as possibly being "One of those afternoons".
However at the 3rd attempt HENRY scored getting around the 'keeper planting the ball into the empty beckoning net. No change at half time, but within 2 minutes Bolton had equalised with SEAMAN being found wanting, and about 2 yards out of position when a deep cross from his right sailed over his head into the goal, "a la" NAYIM and England v. Brazil. (This week has been a week of goalkeeping nightmares with incidents at Aston Villa and Wimbledon. And now Seaman (again!).
The midfield, without Vieira had not really taken a grip of the game, and required something. "Dennis Bergkamp" being on the bench, with Wednesday night's match with PSV obviously being in AW's mind. However a "double sub" together with Jeffers occured and with DB10's first touch sent HENRY racing away to net, only to be ruled out by the AR. The rest of the pressure was not beneficial in producing a goal, only a red (second yellow) card for CAMPO, for kicking the ball away for an Arsenal free kick, resulting in a "ten yard advancement" which Henry only just failed to convert. With timewasting tactics being employed by Bolton, resulting in their goalie being booked, the extra 4 minutes added on was required as KANU, playing a generally lathargic match prodded home the ball from about 10 yards into the Bolton goal while the defenders were looking for it!
The ground erupted! A minute after this, either KANU or JEFFERS could have made it 3 but neither of them took control probably of the incident from 6 yards out, and the keeper collected it without trouble.
3 points was the main priority, and it's games like this when you get them that marks you as champions where others don't keep up the fight until the whistle blows.
All looks good from the "top of the tree". Early indications look good for it to continue. Roll on Wednesday!
