What the heck is up with $5.25 for a cup of "beer"?!?! Am I the only one that has been buying this crap? Un-freakin' beliveable! Now I'll have to arrive an hour earlier for the Barra tailgate to make up for this outrage!!

    ;)

It's only 50 cents more than last year... what are you complaining about!

I think the stadium authority has to recoup some of the money they lost when the Grand Prix race thing collapsed with them holding the bag. Also, you do want to contribute to them going on all their expensive junkets in pursuit of that fanciful baseball team, don't you??? :(

Makes me glad I don't drink the stuff anymore.

Crap, during the glory days of the Redskins I remember buying canned Bud at the stadium for $2.50 and bitching it went up a quarter.

i could actually stomach a beer at $5 if it were decent beer but a bud for $5 is a bit too much. i decided this year not to buy anymore, i'll just increase my "front end loading" at the tailgage.

Somebody has to pay for all those snazzy new signs in the concession stands.

Actually, the food in the concessions stands seems marginally better this year.

Cotton Candy also went up from $3 to $3.25. Outrageous I tell you.

I used to sneak a rack of beer in my down jacket during Redskins games. Once I got stopped, so I gave the door guy a can of Bud for the hell of it. He pocketed it and let me through. I went to his gate from then on, same routine.

gotta love the stadium commission, not that many public agenices have such a clear and unified mission and do it so well. from the top down its an organization that seems to master the shady deal, questionable transaction and from Bill's beer to Bobby G.'s expense account, has made an artform out of ethical impropriety.

I would bring my gate dude a pint of Beam at the last home game of the year and wish him a Merry X-mas. He was a retired guy supplementing his income and working at RFK enabled him to out of the house and watch the 'Skins without his wife nagging him. Never got his name and I wonder if he's still alive.

Dave Brother: You are absolutely right... the markup is way too much to justify on any level. $5.25 is more than grocery stores charge for an entire six pack. While any sports franchise is free to mark up concessions at their will, consumers also have a right to refuse to pay such exhorbitant markups. On a comparison: no local nightclub or bar that I know of charges $5.25* for plain draft beer... that price is reserved for mixed drinks or import beer. Additionally, generally if you are paying top dollar for a drink at a bar or nightclub, it is delivered to you by a waitress. Conversely, at RFK, you have to wait in a long line for the "right" to pay for it! I would suggest that folks investigate ways to bring their own or don't drink at all! While every sports fanatic loves to support their team and its facilities, the concession markup has just become outrageous and RFK consumers need to be the ones to say: sorry...not buying it anymore, in order to force the facility to reduce THEIR PROFIT out of customer sports entertainment expense!

*I hope I don't get flamed with a list of joints charging in excess of $5.25 for draft. I based this statement upon Northern Virgina bars and nightclubs staying pretty level and constant with the $3.75-$4.00 amount for plain draft, which is what RFK should charge for its 3/4-cup draft beers!

Amen to that. These jokers try to fleece the fans anyway possible with overpriced beer, food and $10 parking. I can only imagine what their books look like.

"You are getting first-class service as fans, you loser infidels, the supreme commander of the Stadium Authority is not a crook. The fans are all telling lies. The Screaming Eagles, La Norte and the Barra DC can crawl into the Anacostia River" ----RFK Bob, newly hired PR representative for SA.

Except for the fact that it's the concessionaire that sets the prices, he is right. If you don't like the price of beer, don't buy it. Simple as that.

Just for comparison, Harris Teeter had some individual cans of beer in a grocery cart for sale the other week when I was in.

    The price... $0.50.

Ahh.. market monopolies, what can you do.
But as long as people keep paying $5.25 then they will keep charging it.

Rumor say they charge you .25 dollar per beer for help to build new stadium for DC United in near future.

No choice. I have to pay the $5.25 (repeatedly) to help me forget my fear of concrete chunks of decrepit RFK stadium falling upon my head.

I'm not surpriesed the stadium has a serious mark up for their wares, who is? I agree the that $5.25 for Bud is steep (I think $1 for Bud is steep), but as Lanky reports, cosumer revolt can be your friend.

For me $6 for the Foggy or Red Hook, while steep is not completely out of bounds. Yet.

My biggest complaint from the opener was how ************ing long it took 'em to pour a beer. Keep the taps open and starting handing them off in rapid style fashion. Get with the customer service folks.

    Food

I don't know, the Italian sausages no longer seem to come with onions and peppers. Not to mention that it takes 30 minutes to get served...

    Beer Price Outrage

If you think that's outrageous, according to Bill the Beer Man, this is the deal between the beermen and RFK as explained about 3 or 4 seasons ago, so I'm sure prices have gone up since.

The beer men actually buy the cases of beer off RFK at $72 per case (that's $3 a beer), the beer men then pocket the remainder plus tips. Bill said on a really good day he could sell 20 case of beer during a DCU game.

Now what does a case of Bud sell for in the grocery store? $7, $10? Facter in the fact that RFK is buying directly from a distributor and at huge volumes, figure they buy a case of Bud for what maybe $5....that's some huge profits for RFK!

I couldn't find a beer guy for the enitre first half! It was amazing. Then I spent 30 minutes waiting to pay $5.25 for a bud light, dear God. I hate paying that much for water, but I needed to get drunk because the play on the pitch was so bad.

Maybe I should just bring airplane bottles like the old days.

    Re: Beer Price Outrage

That's how it's done at every stadium. The vendors are independent contractors. I think the beer (and soda and water, for that matter) is 25 or 50 cents more if purchased through a vendor rather than at the concession stands, but I'm not sure.

In KC we're paying $5.50 for 16oz draft. Yeah, it'll put a hole in your wallet if you dont "preload" as much as possible.

Tweaked: I've actually set and figured up the figures on a keg at a stadium. Its not just RFK, its everywhere. They get kegs cheaper than we can (about $45 for Bud). According to the site below you can get about 140 cups (those look like 12 oz.) so thats roughly 100 16 oz. beers. At $5.50 (Arrowhead) thats $550 buck they make. Gross profit is then around $500 per keg or every 100 beers.

Clean taps is all I'm asking for. As the season goes on the Red Hook and Foggy Bottom can get a little gamey.
