Maybe it's just the sleep-deprived blood coursing through my veins right now that has inhibited all sense of good judgement, but I will throw out my idea regardless: We set up a soccer camp for older people. People who are out of shape and/or have never played much of the game in their recent life (if ever). We meet once or twice on a few weekends for some soccer instruction and then have a cook out or go out and throw down a few libations afterward. The idea struck me when I tried to play a little recreational soccer with some European folk, and I realized much to my dismay, that I really had no grasp of even the most fundamental skills required to play soccer. I mean, I have watched a lot of games, but I have never really learned how to play. I'm sort of like the Eddie Robinson of life. Anyway, I figured that we've got some people who know about "soccer" (Jason coaches kids... that counts for something), and we've also got some people who enjoy eating and drinking. Maybe we could even convince a few Fire players to join us for an afternoon that combines old people with bad backs and kids summer soccer camp (oh yeah, we'd also get beer and brats... and maybe babes too). Sounds like a good idea to me. I finally got to play with some international (I was the only American) classmates of mine last year for the first time. I also have watched alot, but never played. After breaking the news to them that I wasn't just a really bad American footballer, but rather an absolute novice, they offered to give me some instruction. It's not a soccer camp, but the BBSL is a good place for starting players. It is a mix of experinced players and starters. Plus the place we play at has a bar. The next session starts in Mid-January. www.bbsl.info

BBSL This league stated about 3 or 4 years ago. We started out with a kind of random team assignments and then just let the teams take it from there. I've been in from the start and have loved it. It was my first time playing since I was about 8yr old. Since then I've been playing 3-5 times a week with other leagues as well. A lot of fun and drinking is involved too!! I know there is a wide range of experiences. Some are out of shape beginners up to those who have played pro ball. It is men and women, but no real co-ed rules. But it is Indoor due to the season. I think there are some openings on a team right now if anyone is interested. Just show up the place (SEI Soccer City) on Friday nights starting about 8:30 on Field #3 and ask around. Later, Cory

We don't want to look like sissies out there. Oh yeah, and girls can play too. About the BBSL - how much does it cost to start a team or join that league? Ian -- Benny is right. Also, my camp would attempt to hire Ryan Futugaki, Jessie Marsch and J.C. (among others). We wouldn't just be playing a game of "kick the empty Bush Light can over the bum's head." I'm talking about real soccer. We may not have "money" for which to rent their services, but maybe they can be lured by the babes. (I'm looking into the book "Dating for Dummies" for ideas on the babe situation. Apparently the term "broad" is no longer accepted as a cute, loveable and affectionate expression of male dominance in relationships) JeffGMc - you'd receive an official invitation to this camp. We'll throw a kegger at Carl's apartment in order to pay for the plane ticket.
This is a league created for Fire Fans to socialize in the off season, and as such, everyone is welcome regardless of skill level. It's really been a blast. I've gotten to know more fire fans at the BBSL than all the games & tailgates I've attended. SEI has a bar, and we usually go up to the bar after the matches for a few pitchers. The next session will start January 16th, and will be Friday nights with the first match starting ~9:00pm. We'll post the details when they are available. There is no fee to start a team or join the league. The only fee is the team payment to SEI for the field time. Rosters should be 10-12 folks, with at least one female player. It works out to $70-80 bucks a player for a 10 game season depending on the roster size. It sounds like you guys have most of a team already. The Yahoos (Lisa Brennan team) on Mon and Vortex United on Fri. Like paul said the Fri night will have another session after the current one (same sessions as all the others at SEI) but you can stop by Fri nights and likely join in with a short team. Cory
