For what is worth According to this site Becks first game in America will be the exhibition match against Chelsea. http://mlsunderground.blogspot.com/2007/05/beckham-debut-unveiled.html I'm not familiar with this site... where does it stand in the credibility factor?
Not sure but I've heard it elsewhere, too...think it's established as fact now barring injury. Posted it on the other boards but I don't think ppl got it .
This isn't new news though. First Becks game is vs. Chelsea, then he plays Pachuca and then Chivas at home, then the first game against an MLS opponent is us on July 31 in the Superliga here in Dallas, and the first regular season MLS game is in Toronto. http://la.galaxy.mlsnet.com/schedule/season.jsp?team=t106
Is there already a prediction thread for how long it will take before one of these underpaid MLS players intentionally breaks Beckham's leg?
or banned from soccer altogether... there will be a "come to Jesus" meeting for all players and officials prior to Becks arrival. Topic for the meeting. "Touch Beckham and you will pay with your life, we have trained snipers at various locations with strict orders to shoot to kill in the event any one of you hackers out there dares to even sweat on Sir Beckham" meeting adjourned.
I am not saying I want it to happen, I am a big Beckham fan myself. I just know how it is human nature to do sh!t like that, and players have already been quoted saying things similar to that.
Interesting view from NY Sun article on Blanco, which mentions Beckham: "Blanco made his World Cup debut in 1998, when the world saw for the first time his now famous "bunny-hop" move, in which he clasps the ball between his feet and hops over tackles, holding it in position as he jumps. That is the sort of move that brings forth "oohs" and "aahs" from spectators but is also likely to provoke dangerous tackles from opponents. The thought of Blanco — or Beckham, for that matter — on the receiving end of wild tackles is one that must cause some concern to the Fire and the Galaxy, and to the MLS itself. After all, in a league that sports a "physical" tag, players who like to dribble are more than likely to attract attention from vigorous defenders. Both Beckham and Blanco have been sidelined recently by injuries. Will the referees offer special protection for the new MLS stars? No, says Esse Baharmast, the man in charge of referees at the United States Soccer Federation, "Our aim has always been to eliminate violence and rough tackles. We will re-emphasize that commitment in preseason guidelines, but that is our standard practice." Rightly, there will be no special rules for superstars. But an overall clampdown on overly physical play — one that lasts all season long, and does not simply fade away after the first few weeks of the season — could greatly boost the attractiveness of MLS-style soccer, could help to produce a style that would delight Mexican fans."
I call Bullsh!t on that one. Remember the LAG match this year when everytime we touched Donovan the whistle blew? We all know that these DP's are going be "untouchable"
Those DP's are going to make the whole league about 10 times more fun. Pablo Mastroeni should perhaps be benched before the Galaxy/Fire games even start. (on the other hand, should Zidane come over, I would like to see him "confront" the cRapids).
why, and for who? I'm not trying to delve back into the pro-DP, anti-DP debate again, I'm just asking. there's no way I'll personally have 10 times more fun watching MLS games now that Beckham and Blanco are here. I had plenty of fun before.
Think I'm gonna sell my ticket to the Beckham game and watch outside if I can get more than like $75 for it....hell I know all the ushers, they'll let me in anyways.
You will get more than $75 for it, I would pay quite a bit to see that guy play in Dallas if I am able to make it down that weekend.
http://mlsunderground.blogspot.com Quote: UPDATE: Long Awaited David Beckham News Earlier in the week I promised some additional news regarding the arrival of David Beckham. Ok, so here's what I know: David Beckham will be on the cover of Sports Illustrated on July 11th. The Galaxy are rebranding in conjunction with the SI cover and will share their new identity within a week of that piece. ---------- Beckham will be expected to spend a significant time each away match interacting with fans. After each game, fans will have the opportunity to get up close to Beckham. The exact details are not known as the Galaxy are still trying to gauge the public interest in their designated player. But the reality is Beckham will not be inaccessible player like most star players are in other sports in this country.
