http://edition.cnn.com/2007/SPORT/football/01/11/beckham/index.html I cannot wait till his first appearance in RFK... Doze
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition he's poster child for soccer mercenary and all that's wrong with soccer today
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition Just think -- DCU now gets to beat Donovan and Becks in the same game. That is going to be sweet
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition Oh, I'm sure it'll be quite the scene...with every variety of Becks jersey from non-regular fans spotting the crowd. Should be quite the half season for MLS attendance when he arrives in August. Galaxy season ticket prices and game day ticket prices just went up.
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition Anyone have a number? The first I saw was £128 Thx, Jay!
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition Yes, well, one of the anomalies of the Nowak era was that we didn't have a good record at all against the Galaxy. At all. Ray Hudson on the other hand could beat the Galaxy...but lose to everyone else.
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition I see another Shaq/Kobe Situation developing between Landy-Poo and Becks...
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition as long as LA's one trip to RFK doesn't happen before August. when the schedule comes out there are going to be a couple bummed Eastern teams when they find out they are playing LA in May or June. I can't understand why they don't go ahead and pay the transfer fee. Madrid can't want that much, they've already said they don't want him back.
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition something tells me the fee they're asking for is a little steep for a player whose contract is up in six months. I think negotiations will continue on a transfer fee, and if the price is right, LA will take it. They have the money.
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition I am delighted on several fronts. I see additional attention (column inches, broadcast time) for soccer in mainstream American media, and additional attention (column inches, broadcast time) for soccer in American sports media. The circus that was Adu in DC is now the circus that is Beckham in LA. In other words, the excitement occurs at a distance, and we can bask in its glow without having to deal with the diva/primadonna/petulance/coming-of-age issues that we had over the past several years. DCU benfits from the increased league exposure (ticket sales, and general well-being) in its efforts to negotiate with DC and build a stadium. He is an adidas guy. DCU is an adidas team. More opportunities for network-effect branding. He has the academy in LA, and he has a real opportunity to be engaged on the player development level. Someone mentioned this already: beating Lando and Becks at the same time will be delicious. Posh was, and remains, my favorite Spice Girl. And yes, I unapologetically enjoy gazing upon her visage and figure at every opportunity.
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition So, is there a Beckham Rule to the Beckham Rule? I thought MLS was still a single entity and that there were these things called allocations. Admittedly, I don't follow these things too tightly, partly because MLS makes shit up as they go along and never stick to their operating rules.
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition Is it possible Beckham himself is holding up the transfer? I would assume he's got stipulations in his contract that he would have to approve any transfer. He wants to come to the US, but he doesn't want a paltry transfer fee going on record for him. To save a little face he blocks the transfer and waits until his contract expires and leaves on a free. Is that possible?
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition Will RFK open up the upper deck for the Beckham match?? I'm dreaming of DC vs LA MLS Championship in RFK in front of full sell out fantastic atmosphere broadcasing on national TV... and DCU wins the Trophy...
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition see... you had me until your last bullet point, then you had to throw it all away.
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition Good for the league. . Not that worried about him as a threat on the field - its not like they got Ronaldo who could average 2+ goals a game. Becks is clearly highly talented, but as a flank player how much impact is he really going to have? I guess Landon will have to give up free kicks, which will likely continue to be the Becks biggest imprint on the field. . Good and good.
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition Here I was thinking AEG had some cash to splash having just sold United ... $250 MILLION is just way, way, way too much to spend on Beckham. How the hell can he bring that much into our league to support what's being spent on him?!? The whole of MLS had better not go down with the ship.
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition I was thinking about that -- and how I hate these small 25k stadiums now As much debate as there is (are we the new NASL), this is just exciting. I lived in Madrid Becks came over, and I didn't think he was all that, but hey, perception is important. He helped Real become the richest club in the world, but didn't bring trophies. MLS needs that kind of attention. The only thing better would be signing his superior RM teammate, Zidane
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition just imagine this years Championship final at RFK DC vs LA!!!
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition $250M over 5 years is not bad, as long as the MLS has at least 75% image rights (which I am sure they do). Remember he more than paid off his sticker price to Real Madrid on jersey sales alone and I believe his earnings were more than $50M last year, which was mostly, marketing stuff. By the way, Ronaldo is going to NY. And we get Ruy... sounds fair.
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition with our RFK record vs LA in last few years I'd rather play someone else
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition This $250 million (50 mill a season) # has to be bullshit. Any have any info whether the # is inflated by a marketing partnership/ownership stake or something similar?
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition If he really wants to be a superstar in the US, he will have to stop doing interviews where he only answers in bizarre cartoon voices.
Re: Beckham to Sign Five Year Deal with LA: DC United Edition Everyone take a deep breath - the $250M has to include his image rights which are $44M annually. That is $220M and then $6M in salary that was rumored gets your $250M. AEG will probably only shell out $30M over the five years.
